Help required for my old man's birthday... 23:05 - Nov 22 with 2500 viewsTresBonne

Ok, one of the more random threads you will see on here at 11pm but here goes...

My dad's birthday is coming up, turning 57. I'm a younger lad myself mid twenties, but I want to write some oddly specific things in his birthday card (i.e, you've now lived to see the....x, something along those lines).

I'd love it if I could get some really obscure stuff in there that he'd never expect me to know.

As I know there is a lot of you on here of a similar generation/closer age, I'd love to be able to gather some ideas?!

What's some oddly specific and funny things that a 57 year old would've known about growing up? He's been in Suffolk, more specifically Bury for most of his lifespan, so anything from there that could be of use will be appreciated!

Do you remember when OAPs queued for free tea and sugar from Glasswells in Bury town centre?

Do you remember when there was a butcher with its own abattoir at the end of Northgate Street?

Do you remember when M&S used to close their shoe section for half-day closing on Thursdays because all the shoe shops in Bury were shut for the afternoon?

Do you remember Bury bus station, where McDonalds now is?

Do you remember...?

Taking empty lemonade bottles back to the shop for 10p ..?
Scrumping apples from peoples gardens,?
The whole Street playing football or cricket together,? (dog poo everywhere)
Attaching cardboard to your bike forks, to make it sound like a motor bike as it hit the spokes. Although it really sounded like a loud fart..?
Kids walking to school in vast numbers, like a massive human caterpillar, from every estate..
Skinny , active, healthy ,kids
Sitting with the family at meal times.

The lost verse from Marillion’s “Kayleigh” is not as good as I would have hoped.

Or, very specifically not Suffolk let alone Bury St. Eds:

Do you remember, your President Nixon ?
Do you remember, the bills you have to pay ?
Or even yesterday ?

Will work best if he was an avid Bowie fan.

There's a row of terraced houses where the abattoir used to be. Can't remember the name though.

And next to the bus station was Purdy's - where mum used to take us for milk-shakes before getting on the bus.

Don't know Bury so well, now. Is the Odeon cinema still over the road?

From my three and a bit years at St Louis Middle School the same time. I haven't been back for many years but I recall:

The overhyped punch ups between the three upper schools.
The town smelt of the brewery at one end and sugar beet residue at the other.
Andy's Records.
WHSmith being the main shop for home computers.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.
