R.I.P. Alistair Darling 13:02 - Nov 30 with 2101 viewsRyorry

Only 70, too young.

Will always remember him for that night he saved the UK economy. Good man.

Compared to all politicians since 2010, he was a giant both politically and intellectually.

I remember being in Standing Committee on the Finance Bill where one of the junior Treasury ministers was struggling a bit explaining a very complicated tax provision. Darling came in and took complete control.

That government was full of decent and likeable people, and I remember being taken for a drink on the terrace after that Standing Committee meeting by Geoffrey Robinson and Ian McCartney.

The contrast with some really nasty Ministers in the Cameron government couldn't be greater.

Here are two touching tributes, the second of which emphasises my point about the decency of those in the Blair and Brown governments.

EDIT: Here's another about his decency.

This, from Sunak, doesn't even mention Darling's role in the financial crisis. How mean and cheap is that, given that other Tories including Osborne have mentioned this?

“Alistair Darling’s passing is a huge loss to us all.

“He was a dedicated public servant who served this country though challenging times.

“The role he played during the 2014 independence referendum was vital in keeping our union together.

“My deepest condolences go out to his family and friends at this difficult time.”

This from Sam White, one of his advisors, is nice.

"To this day, I still regularly meet civil servants who take me aside and when they think no one can hear whisper ‘he was my favourite minister’."

Have some heart here, he's decided to do the decent thing and gloss over the fact that Labour caused the global financial crisis.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

I suppose his advisers suggested he edit it out.

Our resident neo-liberal political commentators of course slavishly followed cameron's lie that the global financial catastrophe was the fault of the Labour Government.

Any of the tories or their supporters should hang their heads in shame if they have the temerity to now pretend that cameron, his government and their fan club didn't behave like that. They are crying crocodile tears, as befits creatures without an ounce of humanity.
