New Electoral System Needed on 22:16 - Jul 4 with 2343 views | Swansea_Blue | No chance. It preserves the status quo and, as we saw last time there was a vote on it, the campaigning was as bent as for Brexit. Neither of the two parties who will ever be able to form a government are altruistic enough (at all) to just mandate the change. [Post edited 4 Jul 2024 22:20]

I’m fine with the projected results thanks. I’ll wait for your new system to see if it’s any better. [Post edited 4 Jul 2024 22:34]

I would imagine he’s referring to the unfairness of FPTP. It’s a system that shoukd be consigned to the last century. It won’t change though because it always benefits either the Tories or Labour and keeps them in power.

There was a chance to change it during the coalition and it was voted down.

There's a whole load of reasons isn't there? - Labour massive majority with a lower vote share than Corbyn achieved - Reform vote share that warrants a far higher number of MP's to fairly represent those voters - Lib Dems achieving more seats than Reform with a lower vote share - Green party only having 2 projected MP's First past the post is fatally flawed.

I feel sorry for the Green party, constantly get good vote share across the country, but never the seat numbers in paraliament.

Even Nick Clegg called AV a grubby little compromise. Full proportional representation is the only fair way for everyone’s vote to count. Then we will see parties like the Greens have a bigger say in our future. Plus there will be genuine left, right and centre parties.

Ah, so you're a fairness when it suits type of person. Sad indictment of the selfishness that prevents change here.

The Tories, with a majority of seats off a minority of popular support, could have changed it, but didn't. PR is the way to go, but I fear we are more likely to boost the economy and promote friendly internationalism by going back into the EU than ever bring in a fair voting system.

A proper version of proportional representation has never been voted on. It was a self-professed compromise and a bad one at that. There's a lot of talk about student loans being the biggest mistake of coalition, but selling themselves short on this for a bit of power is the ultimate fail of that period.

He described me as stupid and selfish. I am neither, but have a different opinion to him is all. Why ask about a change of electoral system tonight, just after the prediction of a Labour landslide? [Post edited 4 Jul 2024 22:59]

It’s been discussed on here for years and quite a bit during this election. Usually by left leaning people.

Bingo. Nailed it in the first sentence - it suits the two main parties to keep it as it is. Referendums aren’t the right way to go about changing it either. I don’t remember one for setting the voting system for the Welsh Govt. A hybrid system was chosen because it was recognised that FPTP alone was flawed.

I described your post as stupid, not you. There is a subtle difference. I'm a Green Party member who is much happier with a Labour government than a Tory one. Yet you seem to have blindly assumed I'm a right wing voter.
