How do we fit Morsy, Phillips, Cajuste in 09:47 - Aug 21 with 2626 views | Nutkins_Return | I think there will a phase in situation tona degree but with the money spent on Cajuste and Phillips I really struggle to see how they won't be expected as regular starters. So how do we fit them in and will we see a system tweak? Morsy just seem so integral to how we operate, collecting ball from keeper etc. He's Mr Ipswich now so surely he will be first on team sheet still. Big challenge for McKenna this but good one. Cajuste is needed for the legs in the middle otherwise I'd say Morsy and Phillips initially. None of them really suit the higher up the pitch positions.

The 'spare' comes on for one or the other, and Morsy gets more second half rests than he's been used to. Of course injuries and suspensions bring Luongo and Taylor into the mix too. I'm sure that anyone who comes here is well aware that 'starting' as opposed to 'finishing' doesn't carry the same extra kudos that it used to, and they are all fully comfortable with it being a 16 man team on the pitch over the course of 90+ minutes.

Noone is guaranteed a starting slot. We have a squad of 25 and they all want to start, competition is healthy and everybody will "up their game" if they want to start. [Post edited 21 Aug 2024 13:09]

Absolutely but I'm talking technically i.e. do people see us adapting tactics/shape to accommodate all 3 etc

That said SM will likely pick up many yellows so will probably miss quite a few games being banned. Equally perhaps where some of the tougher games have already been lost he may well be subbed early to save him for the 'winnable' games?

Chaplin is I think moving way down the pecking order… I’m finding the dismantling of the team of 2022-24 difficult. I know, I know. It’s football, we’re on a journey etc. Soon though most of the starting XI will be new. And will they care as much, click as a group, become friends? Interesting season in so many ways

How do we fit Morsy, Phillips, Cajuste in on 08:20 - Aug 22 with 1333 views | glasso | I can't remember where I read it, but I'm sure one of the players was talking last season about how KM had changed the squad's attitude towards 'starters' and 'subs' - that the players all knew that there were players who kicked off and players that came on later in the game (i.e. it wasn't a bad thing to be 'benched' - you're just playing a different part of the game). If he's managed to really instill that, then good for him - he keeps players happy when they'd normally be grumbling about not starting games, because they know they'll come on and get good game time anyway. And it means we can accommodate all three in midfield and keep them happy.

Really, the way football is, coming on with 30 to go can be better than starting as you're coming on against tired players. So finishers could find themselves ala Sarmiento, becoming heros and scoring goals that way, compared to if they started games. Harness is a prime example I think, I don't really see a handy player there when he starts, but as a sub, sometimes he's a really handy fresh set of legs

How do we fit Morsy, Phillips, Cajuste in on 10:01 - Aug 22 with 1113 views | Europablue | It was the same last season and we didn't have as many injuries at the start of the season. You see all these players and you can see the need for them all, then you get a couple of injuries and Morsy gets a couple of suspensions and we really need all of the players. Taylor was brought in basically as a replacement for Luongo, and he didn't displace him. Morsy and Luongo are both now another year older and the step up in the caliber of player that we can sign has also gone up. I wouldn't be surprised if Morsy is out of the starting line up by the end of the season, but I also wouldn't be surprised if he kept his place. It is important to have the competition in there. Phillips is clearly a class above the kind of player that we should have and that is why he's only a loan with very little prospect of staying with us past this season. Cajuste is a longer term prospect if we stay up and of course everyone will be a year older next season and the midfield will need a refresh if we stay up. Keeping everyone happy is a headache for sure, and it was a lot easier last season when we were winning matches. That is the blessing and curse of the Premier League including having to move on some players that you really like.
