This expression is suddenly everywhere in the media, I can't help zoning in on it every time it is lazily trotted out & it is grinding my gears.
I find it particularly annoying when a reporter starts a question with it when interviewing a manager, footballer, or even in a mainstream news interview on ... pollution or anti-social behaviour. But equally so when journalists/podcasters are just giving their match report or general assessment - there is one particular Town podcaster who regularly throws it out 2, or even 3, times in the same sentence!
Maybe it's just me noticing it, but I fear it's getting to epidemic levels & must be reigned in.
Tune in next week, when I'll be sinking my teeth into the rise of the penetrating journalistic technique of stating a scoreline, following by "your thoughts", as a lead question following a game. [Post edited 25 Oct 2024 16:26]

Sometimes "amount of people" is more appropriate than "number of people", but yep, not often.
On the subject of people, just about everybody (young and old) says "less people" rather than "fewer people" - but that's an old one. The most recent ones that boil my gears are:

There is a sense in which excited for is correct, and I have heard it used that way, but I agree it shouldn't be used if excited about is meant.
Here is an example from the following link.
My best friend is getting married/has won a million dollars/is running for President, and I might say "Wow! I'm so excited for you".
