Remembrance ... on 25 October 20:01 - Oct 25 with 1297 views | Nthsuffolkblue | I suppose that, as Leicester haven't got another home game until 23 November, it makes sense but it seems very odd to have an act of remembrance so far in advance of Remembrance Day. [Post edited 25 Oct 2024 20:02]

Remembrance ... on 25 October on 20:05 - Oct 25 with 1274 views | SitfcB | It’s gone silly. It used to just be the games on Remembrance weekend, and it actually meant something, over the last few years every club feel the need to host a remembrance fixture and we end up having a minute silence for it at 3 games so clubs can’t be accused of being disrespectful, just waters it down imo. It used to be a respectful thing that was sombre. Now we're headed towards the American veterans day type stuff and hype. Ironically the opposite of what remembrance was for. Giant poppy went up on Town hall in Ipswich last week! It used to be buy a poppy in first week of November and a two minute silence. Much better I thought.

Quite. Spurs doing something in two weeks is appropriate but it need be nothing more than a respectful two minutes of silence and The Last Post on a bugle. The proliferation of minutes of applause at games is a related issue.

To be fair they had promotion sewn up shortly after Leeds had secured the title and to then snatch the title from Leeds was quite remarkable.

Also the fans always get it wrong, the Last Post is meant to be played and THEN a period of silence, but most clap and cheer straight after the Last Post.

Wasn't there an instance in L1 (21/22 I think) where we had three home matches in 'remembrance week' (two league and one FLT) and, as a result, we ended up having three minutes' silences for fear of being seen as disrespectful?

ITN newscaster already wearing poppy on 25/10. Seems to me it sadly dissipates the impact to have Remembrance spread out over two weeks.

Couldn’t agree more. It seems to have become more of a competition to see who can ‘outdo’ the next person to prove I’m more respectful than you, when in fact the opposite is the case. As a child growing up in an era only a couple of decades after WW2 i only remember it being about wearing a poppy in the week or two before Remembrance Sunday - with my Mum volunteering to ‘sell’ Poppies for a few days each year.

It's become a 'festival of remembrance' which is another opportunity for tat sellers to cash in. I saw a FB post for poppy corner flags for your grassroots team the other day. I'm sure it's just what Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen had in mind. A far more fitting tribute would be to take the kids team to a local military museum or to visit some CWGC sites in the neighbourhood or heaven forbid - turn out for the remembrance day parade and chat to some veterans.

The Royal British Legion stated selling it's poppies this week. That I suspect why others are jumping on the bandwagon. I urge everybody to ignore the tat and support the RBL in their efforts to help servicemen and women. And yes I would like to see more understanding of what it is all about. For me as a youngster it was brought hoe by a visit to the Menin Gate at Ypres looking for three members of my family.

its not always the fans fault, I cant remember if it was the ref who caused it by blowing his whistle too many times or too early, or must have been Mark Murphy starting to talk again, and then creating confusion about the order of things, but last years seemed a bit of a mess. all they have to do is announce as a reminder, there will be a period (preferably a minute) of silence after the last post.
