Nice to see Norwich down in 10th with only 4 wins from their first 13.
Surprised to see Pompey rock bottom. What happened to them, I thought they were one of the better/up-and-coming Champ teams?
And Luton, Prem last season, just one place above the relegation zone on the same points as Plymouth.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Totally different league this year, massively lower quality at the top end, much of a muchness in the middle, and the budgies are sinking back to their natural level. They can yo-yo at an interface where they'll be much more comfortable; between the second and third divisions. I hope they don't drop too much lower than the third division, at least not for too long. Wouldn't actually like to see them in non League.

It's amazing how quickly we've got used to top end Champs (last season quality level anyway) and Prem-level football; 2024-2025 mid-table Championship level is dire.

They're got about 2 players left who are any good and who they're quite reliant on. One is Sargent who seems to struggle with injuries, and the other is Sainz who to be fair is a very good player. He can come here in January if he fancies it. Beyond that they've got an awful lot of overpaid plodders who won't get them to the top 6. Their recruitment has been shockingly bad when you consider some of the fees and wages they've paid.

What position does Sainz play in? Would he fit into our setup?

Would be a great move for the lolz alone.

Tends to play on the left, most likely to be competing with Szmodics and Clarke (Broadhead too) so unlikely to be a move we would make I think, but I agree robbing them of him would be quite funny for a laugh.

I was semi-keen on Sargent as backup to Delap and Hirst, but I just saw he's out injured AGAIN, so I'll take him off the list. Sainz has been impressive in his goalscoring by the look of things, but I wasn't taken with his overall game or his attitude last season, a bit like that other lad who scored twice against us and they somehow managed to sell for decent money.

Maybe Sainz is worth a look, but there's something about his attitude I don't like (irrespective of who he plays for), he looks selfish and arrogant and not a team player (or capable of doing the defensive side) from what I remember of him.

He'd definitely eat himself if he was made of chocolate, bit of a sh1thouse at times too but I don't mind that. Don't get me wrong if he was at Leeds or Sheffield United he would have way less appeal, its just the prospect of flexing some premier league muscle to lowly Norwich that would be worth it for the bants. Especially as they all love him so much.

Sargent missed Saturday and may need surgery, they don't really have a replacement. Sainz was linked with Bilbao in the summer.

They're missing a fair few atm. The Championship is about to get busy - it's another 3 game week this week and there's a couple more before xmas. Lack of squad depth could see them struggle.

Whilst they don't look ang better than mid-table atm, knowing them they'll somehow sneak into the play-offs.

eh?

What has any of our worries got to do with it? Just because we're struggling in the Prem (understandably given we've jumped two divisions in two seasons) doesn't mean you can't still discuss Norwich only having 4 wins from 13 in the league below.

I wouldn't worry about them at all.

They don't have anywhere near the depth to compete for the top six.

Better still, next summer will be the year the last crop of decent players leave them if they don't go up. Sainz and Sargent will be gone and they'll be left with signing bargain basement unknowns.

Championship is much of a muchness this season. I've watched quite a lot of it. Leeds should really smash that division but it's Leeds so....hope they don't. It doesn't have the same quality of last season.

The division is exceptionally tight. Norwich a good example, 3 points off play offs, 6 points off 21st!

Obviously my favourite....stats and data.

Leeds the best side in the league statistically. They do everything right. They really should get promoted.

Flashing mentioned Luton and Portsmouth, they've really struggled. Luton have been the classic "looked alright in the middle thirds but totally ineffective at either end".

Sunderland obviously performing well but I notice that key metrics suggest they're beginning to tail off - I don't know enough about their squad!

I wouldn't laugh too much at Norwich quite yet though, they are joint top scorers and create more big chances than any other team in the division - and that's with one of the youngest squads now. I don't profess to know the names of the players but they have a few 18-19 year olds starting for them in games.

The xG table normally gives a good idea of where a team will end up by now. That has Norwich joint 6th, it has Plymouth propping up the rest of the league with Pompey just above them followed by Stoke and then...Watford! They've been incredibly fortunate (clinical) which is almost impossible for a Championship team to keep up throughout a season, so expect them to fall away to a lower-midtable position.

I'm sure I'm done boring people now :)

Sunderland have a young team and aren't blessed with the greatest depth, I'd be really surprised if they stay the course over a long and gruelling Championship season. Its the next 3 months where their ability to stay up there will be interesting to see, I hope they do really as I've always quite liked their fan base.

I think they'll need to add a couple of experienced heads in Jan to help them out. I wouldn't be surprised to see Broadhead go there on loan if he's not getting game time with us.

As much as it pains me to say it I think Norwich have a bit of upside potential if they can keep their key few players fit and available. New manager, apparently some green shoots there, they're the sort of club unlike a lot in mid table that could stick a run of wins together, whereas a lot of those Swansea, Bristol, Stoke types seem less capable of that. Looks a tall ask for Norwich to get promoted though IMO, even if they get into the playoffs there's going to be some stiff competition.

Whilst it is always comforting to see Nodge lose I checked their score on Saturday and the two late goals by Cardiff gave me a nasty reminder of another match.

Ven with the international break there's another 13 rounds of games between now and 1st weekend of Jan (4th-5th). That's a lot of games (11 games in 42 days after the break)

You'd imagine squad depth and quality will come into it over that period, with the likes of Leeds, Burnley, Sheff Utd perhaps pulling away.

I'm surprised that the mighty canaries are doing as well as they are tbh.

Funnily enough, I also had a look at the prem table and reminded me loads of one of our recent prem relegation seasons - got a feeling we were also on 5 points after 10 games? It might have been that one where you lot thought we were hopelessly undercooked and unambitious in our transfer dealings?

You're not wrong on any of those fronts, correct re Sunderland depth.

I also agree with you, Norwich underlying stats suggest playoffs is a reasonable finishing position but I don't think they have the quality to get promoted from that point necessarily. I don't know much about their new coach other than a couple of stats articles about him at his previous club but they seem to be repeating the Farke era, high possession and high touches with only Leeds and Boro doing better.

Always feels a bit daft to me, because that style can never translate to the Prem without £500 million of transfer business, which they're incapable of.

The concern for anyone in the Championship has to be the still-growing gap between them and the Prem. The reality seems to be that without an absolute war-chest you're better to get promoted playing Dyche style football and carry that into the Prem. Or, like Brentford initially, be a team that plays for set-pieces and be exceptionally good at them!

I thought you guys didn't like to talk about history, only the here and now?

The gap's clearly widened and getting bigger. We've been ambitious in our transfer dealings - the worrying thing for Prem hopefuls like yourselves is if we spend more than a £100m to (so far) not win a game, then how would you or anyone else coming up cope?

And of course, if we do come down and you're still there (both scenarios looking likely) we're going to have a much better squad than you, even after sales.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.
