Films. Are there any good ones any more. And have I missed proper ones 18:54 - Jan 4 with 2795 viewsredrickstuhaart

from the past?

I am watching LA Confidential for the first time in 20 years. What an absolutely cracking film it is.

I have paid little attention to cinema or films for years. Not least because Netflix and series have taken over, and every other film is some twot in spandex with lots of CGI...

LA Confidential is a fabulous film!!! On Prime currently I believe as I watched it again over Xmas.

My top film list over the years:
Se7en
The Game - Such a clever clever film!
The Shining - Kubrick version
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Identity - Another film that didn't get the acclaim
Beautiful Mind
The Long Good Friday

I did cheat on the above, as we just moved house and my DVD collection along with a pressie of a DVD player for Xmas. So I'm reeling in the years.... Apocalypse Now is another and if being brave the Redux version.

If you like L.A. Confidential, off the top of my head my list of best noirish / thrillers since that was released would include:

The Departed
Dead Man's Shoes
Road To Perdition
Shutter Island

Longer list available if I include other genres!

....Dead Man's Shoes is a brilliant film.

Any idea if it's streaming on any service? I can't find it anywhere.

Absolute nonsense. Off the top of my head The Place Beyond The Pines, Brightburn, The Shape of Water, Hunt for the Wilder People, '71 and The Railway Man. All non mainstream blockbusters that were excellent.

More mainstream but Pixar hardly made a movie that wasn't excellent for a period of about 20 years.

Okay, I'll play along. No, there are no good films made after the 7/10 classic which was LA Confidential

At least an 8 tbh.

Though not To Have and Have Not. Which was a solid 9.5

To be more specific. Films used to haev a feel, and actors with charisma, rather than knowing smarmy snark or OTT "look at me".

There are sh!t loads of great films from the last 20 years

Seriously, Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a great film. But here are some others.

I Tonya
The Martian
Room (Brie Larson film) there are other films with the same name.
Casino Royale (Daniel Craig)
The Babadook
Pan's Labyrinth (You will need to read subtitles, but it's worth it).
The Witch
Moana (yes, it's a Disney film, but it's fun, has some great songs and The Rock is great)
Nobody
Rocket man
Knives Out

I think I have selected a good range of great films from various genres. All of them IMO a 7 out of 10 or higher.

Cool so you're writing off a load of movies that you haven't seen by their titles. Multi Oscar winning Pixar warrants a "lol".

My guess is you're the type that if asked to choose a favourite Joy Division song, would answer anything but Love Will Tear Us Apart.

Sorry- but when you reference the martian and Moana as great, we are going to disagree.

Martian was okay, but the usual manufactured, formulaic hollywood cheese with uncharismatic actors.

Casino Royale was a fun film. But compared to the old Bond films?

Gems are harder to find now as mainstream cinema relies more and more on remakes, sequels and franchises to survive.

I really enjoyed Mad Max: Fury Road and this year the follow up Furiosa, which was almost as good.

Agree on LA Confidential Russel Crowe at his best.

Christopher Nolan films always good value.

As for 'coming soon' Edgar Wright is doing a new version of The Running Man and the trailer for 28 Years Later looks promising - Danny Boyle back at the helm:

Moana is a great film. You're Welcome.

The Martian is a great film, yeah it's Hollywood, but it's a Ridley Scott Hollywood movie. Matt Damon was far from uncharismatic.

Comparing Casino Royale to the old bond films is a pointless exercise. The Bond Franchise had to adapt or die. And they adapted very well.

You have chosen probably the 3 most main stream films I selected, what about the rest?
