New Manager Bounce (or not!) 07:33 - Jan 16 with 1782 viewsDubtractor

There was a bit of chat on here a month or two back about this, and in particular the fact that, for good or bad, other clubs had the option of a manager change this season whereas we clearly wouldn't sack McKenna.

Now that a few clubs have rolled the dice, it's pretty clear that the manager change is clearly no silver bullet.

Southampton - still sh1t
Leicester - lucky win in RVN's first game, then a lucky draw, then 6 straight defeats
Wolves - brief rally, but now two straight 3-0 defeats
Everton - too early to say, but last night was typical Everton
Man U - Remarkably could get sucked into a relegation fight, though probably won't

Whereas we've started to look more and more like a team able to compete at this level after sticking with McKenna.

Leicester fans in particular must be wondering whether they should have given Cooper a bit more time before getting on his back.

They should have given Cooper more time. He’s experienced at this and I’m not sure why Leicester didn’t back him. The new manager bounce thing will only work if the old manager is not getting the best out of players and the new man is.

McCarthy did exactly that after Jewell’s epic mess and dug us out of the mother of all holes. Back to now, is Ruud van Divealot (never forgiven!) better than Steve Cooper? Well, he’s a bigger name. A marquee name in fact. But is he any good at managing in the Premier League? Cooper is.

The biggest problem though is you can have Harry Corbett and Sooty plus magic wand on your coaching team, but if your players aren’t good enough you’re in trouble. Polish a turd all you like, you’re still left with a turd.

Cooper being ex-Forest was always going to be an uphill task for him. Van Nistelrooy was a naive appointment which has relegated them.

In fairness to Pereira, those two Wolves defeats have come against the two form teams in the division right now and were priced in. His results before then suggest he's probably an upgrade on O'Neil, who was taking them straight down. But let's hope their downward trend continues - all is clearly not well behind the scenes there.

You're right about Southampton and Leicester - both changes seem to have achieved nothing, although Martin's position was clearly untenable.

Everton too early to judge, as you say, but I'm really hoping they've made a big mistake. For all his faults, I don't believe they would have gone down under Dyche. We'll see...

Man Utd - who cares really? Although it would be funny, they won't be in the relegation scrap come the end of the season. It's such a circus that you can only really judge Amorin after a year or so.

But your central point is right - the 'new manager bounce' is actually rarer than it seems and often very short-lived if you get it at all.

Not sure why the Forest thing should make a difference. Firstly, Derby are Forest’s real rivals and secondly I don’t think too many held it against Lambert that he’d managed Norwich here.

What was held against him was that he was clueless and a windbag to boot.

Whatever the reason, SC certainly didn’t seem to have anyone’s backing and Leicester have nailed their colours to the RVN big name mast for what looks at the moment little benefit.

Wolves have goals in them, if they can tighten up at the back I reckon they will be ok.

Agree with this apart from Wolves.

I watched their last 2 matches and they looked decent, albeit a bit naive at the back.

Could have picked up points if they had taken their chances. Performances definitely didn't deserve consecutive 3-0 defeats.

Everton are the team to chase down IMO.

Different fan bases are different. Leicester fans don’t see the Forest connection as an additional reason not to like Cooper plus the things you mentioned. Plenty at the time weren’t overly convinced when Lambert signed but we quickly hit on with it - maybe we should have made more of a noise about his appointment in hindsight. Lesson learnt.

I agree to an extent, but playing well and still losing 3-0 is a REALLY bad habit to get into.

It’s also hilarious that they’ve played twice since we last did, and all they’ve done is replace us in the relegation zone. Their goal difference could have been even worse if the handball had been given in the Forest game.

This might end looking silly and turn out to be wrong, but from a narrative perspective we have always looked and still look the most stable club and team out of those seemingly fighting it out.

Southampton - came up rather luckily in my view after Leeds fked it, beyond their incredible unbeaten run they were never far away from a crisis. Martin couldn't cope this season and their new manager hasn't improved them. Fans restless before the season even started.

Wolves - while I still worry about them a little as they have capable players (one of them should still be banned), they've had a very up and down season with some bizarre head losses along the way. Another change of manager and someone new to the league coming in. Based on highlights they looked very poor tonight, albeit Newcastle are flying.

Leicester - their fans never seemed completely happy from the off. Cooper never fully in favour, and RVN is a pretty big gamble for a team who always seemed likely to be battling relegation.

Everton - just an awfully boring team and frankly they need to be relegated for the sake of the league. They remind me of Sunderland of a few years ago in the PL, constantly fighting the drop year after year and finding a great escape out of somewhere...but eventually succumbing. I'm surprised they dumped Dyche and his anti-football as it seemed the most likely way to survive. Bringing back their former Messiah seems a bit desperate to me, Moyes is a spent force and bored the pants off the West Ham fans.

All this doesn't mean we won't go down but I guess it just serves as a reminder of what has got us to where we are and how 'solid' the club seems right now...and to "trust the process"!

Poll: Pick a goal to win the derby in stoppage time...
