It will be great to see us play there. Have been once before to see Liverpool Bournemouth in a league cup tie but to see Town there again will be brilliant.
Is that the Tanner one? I was v young but my uncle has told me all about it!
Yep. Our worst season in living history and Town do what Sir Bobby's great teams failed to do in over a decade. It followed a 4-1 win v Leicester and we thought the revival was on. It wasn't.
First time I was there was February 1973, so 52 years ago! David Johnson (the first) equalised for us right after Steve Heighway had put Liverpool in front, but Kevin Keagan scored their winner. Not many away fans in those days. We sat in the side stand close to pitch level with The Kop to our left. Travelled there and back in a cold minibus with some supporters from Beccles. Stopped in Mansfield on the way home for a pint after traversing the Snake Pass in the snow. This was way before the M62 was opened, which is the preferred route from North Suffolk these days. Anyone from Beccles remember?
I went in 1993. Game was poor, score was 0-0 so a decent result.
Lasting memory is that it was just after the Jamie Bulger murder, the You'll Never Walk Alone following the minutes silence was spine tingling.
Awful time. Also, not even a full four years since Hillsborough. And given I'm now thirty odd years older and my perception of how quickly time goes has changed, that is nothing in terms of how the city was already still reeling.
My first visit to Anfield following Town was in February 1974 for a FA Cup tie which we lost 2-0. The last time I was there with Town was May 2002 which was our last game in the Premiership that season and we all know how long it took us to get back. One that brought me most joy was the 1-0 win in December 2000 when Stewart scored the only goal of the game. Think I’ve still got a bit of a headache from the celebrations after the game now.
