The attacking conundrum 10:59 - Feb 7 with 1765 views | unstableblue | The reason we lost to Saints was two lapses in concentration (both in the keeping and build-up) AND our lack of attacking ideas and teeth. Delap is the real deal. But he plows a lone furrow too often, lacking service and bodies around him. Enciso looks to have a bit more physicality, as does Szmodcis in part, but our other options can be quite lightweight. The loss of Ogbene AND Burns has removed strength, pace and aerial threat - and that cross ball. We aren’t blessed with raw pace now. Burns injury coming late in the window was a factor. And crucially Leif is being pinned back by quality right wingers/backs AND our speed/patterns of transition (getting bodies forward) means the more lightweight Hutchinson can go down blind alleys, unsupported, and our ball turnover up field is high and often cheap. So who have we got: ——————————————————————Delap/Hirst Jaden/Clarke/Szmodics/Broadhead——Enciso/Chaplin——Hutchinson Obviously many who prefer left can play central number 10, or even right (Jaden), but it’s a little imbalanced. We are loaded on the left side. We have missed Szmodics. But Broadhead has been pretty good - but his miss Saturday possibly cost us the game. I guess our preferred starting 4 is: ———————-Delap Broadhead-Enciso-Hutchinson Then on tougher games it’s now: —————Delap ———-Enciso-Hutchinson —————————————-Johnson How do we make this work? How do we bring more threat? I think the form of Enciso is going to be critical, as well as improvements in our system/patterns of play. We also need partnerships quickly. Perhaps Broadhead/Delap is forming. How do make the subs seamless and impactful?! Hirst Clarke—Szmodics—Jaden - workable? Is this what we’ll see at Coventry? They were a mess against Saints. If Axel stays fit and the keeper settles, and with some tweaks in central midfield we may become more solid. But we need more teeth, and we need them very soon!?

The attacking conundrum on 11:42 - Feb 7 with 1541 views | SaleAway | My take on all of this, is that McKenna's teams have always struggled on 2 fronts with the ball.... 1: a really efficient full press.. we like to try and play through the press, but even in EFL days, some teams were able to shut us out pretty well. The problem in the prem is that teams are bigger, quicker and better drilled, so there are a lot more efficient presses, and as we have seen, that can cause us problems. 2. a low block again, back in the last 2 EFL seasons, we did often struggle to break down a low block. Again, we've seen against some of the "lesser" prem teams, they've given us space to play, but are too well organised for us to break down, and the mistakes that we've made at the back have then cost us. You're right that we need to improve our attacking, but how do we do that.... the new 10s might help us against the low block, but we also could do, as I think a few people have mentioned, with some more dynamic CM passing and movement. People that can help us play through a press. Its probably going to create us more chances, but obviously the risk is higher...

Cajuste and Morsy currently aren't fully working, especially going forward - and given the first goal Saturday, maybe also in protecting the back 4/5 We have to start breaking the lines, get the central midfielders carrying the ball forward - I think the centre backs also need to bring it out more. Also more dynamic through and wide passing from the central midfielders. If that means Phillips then so be it. Often Taylor does a lot of good things when he comes on as a sub.

Delap's inclination to dive is his one weak spot really. Yes it got us a couple of big penalties earlier in the season, but I think refs are now switched on to him and less likely to award.

I can't help but think Woolfenden passing and bringing the ball out of defence would help us progress up the pitch better - I know we perhaps give up other things by bringing him in though.
The attacking conundrum on 14:43 - Feb 7 with 941 views | FrimleyBlue | Delap has had a great season there's no doubt. However is it worth a try with hirst starting for a few games to see how that effects things? He's more about bringing others into games which may bring the best out of Julio. Hutch etc and broady and then delap against tired legs.

That would be a pretty ballsy call to bench our (by a mile) top scorer, and were it to be unsuccessful KM would no doubt get a ton of stick for it. Can't see it happening unless Delap is knackered, or Hirst has been leaving apples on his desk all week.

Appreciate that. But whats he had 1 goal since November maybe 2 ( I'm probably way off there aren't I lol) But I dunno. Just think when we are trying to bring people into kms role it might work quicker and better to work with a striker who knows the role inside out too over one who's not just developing that role himself but developing as a striker rather than a wide striker. If we were winning of course there wouldn't be a need but we do have two strikers so might be worth a go.

The attacking conundrum on 16:13 - Feb 7 with 805 views | hype313 | Our biggest issue is players not releasing the ball in the final 3rd and taking one too many touches and invariably losing possession. We would be far more of a threat if some of our players could learn to pass before getting run into the corner and smothered.
