I got a phone call from them yesterday saying there's a warrant out for my arrest for unpaid taxes. Luckily, i was able to pay them a couple of thousand quid and its all sorted now. Thanks to Gupta at HMRC. Lovely chap.

pah!! thats nothing

The Nigerian Uncle I never knew I had told me if I pay him the very small amount if of £325 just covering the paperwok cost, he can get me a refund of all the Nigerian tax I have paid.

to make it easy if I give him my bank details he will just take the payment from my account

For some reason, the one who called me specifically wanted Google play cards. HMRC must have a side hustle going on.

I paid my tax bill in Amazon gift vouchers. I expect they go directly to Keir Starmer and the cabinet

Starmer only gets it if you pay in Specsavers vouchers.

Raising a complaint works really well. Trying to engage with them any other way is impossible.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Ah yes, the genius of HMRC....realised that they had the wrong address for me, so went online to update it - put the date that I had moved into the form, and it told me that they had a different date. But wouldn't tell me what it was. So I tried to ring them up, spent 40 minutes on hold, pressed a few buttons, then got told to apply on the website and hung up on. Eventually the only way to do it, was to keep trying different dates, until it accepted one.

Having been seconded to HMRC for a period where the staff were out of the top drawer, I don't think that is fair.

The issue it seems to me is a severe lack of staff, coupled with the fact that many people's tax affairs are not as straightforward as was once the case.

These days there is more self-employment, much less more straightforward PAYE, people with many jobs or sources of income, increasing numbers of people with things like second homes or coming within the scope of things like inheritance tax. And all this coupled with what is a rapidly growing population, a proportion of which is rather transitory in term of abode.

They use them to feed the meter to run their website. All totally above board.
