McAteer, Núñez and Furlong feel a little bit like middling championship squad players and fees feel relatively high. Am I being overly pessimistic? Perhaps my expectations were a little bit high.?

Yes you’re being too pessimistic and yes your expectations were too high. We’re signing top end championship/newly promoted to the premier league players. Calling them “middling” championship players is laughable.

Dare I say, that is sometimes what you need.

Leeds signed Bogle last season etc

I'd say Nunez is a significant upgrade over Taylor for example. So I wouldn't describe him as middling. The uproar from them up the road would seem to support this view.

McAteer and Furlong are extremely 'meh' signings, but for a combined fee of around £16m.. I guess the RB in our system tends to me the more solid type, like Axel was.

We seem to have gone from overspending on top end championship players last summer, to overspending on quite average ones.

These are objectively good signings.

I think we have pushed to make some brilliant signings, which haven’t all come off and that’s fine. We are ending the window by adding the finishing touches to an already strong squad.

Regardless of whether you agree with the OP's assessment on the individual players, those statements aren't really contradictory or 'gotchas' like you think they are.

McAteer is not yet twenty four, very much a development prospect who has already pushed on through the leagues, I think he can have a realistic ambition of becoming a regular Premier League player - hopefully for us.

Marcelino Núñez has thirty international caps, over the last three years - not shabby.

Darnell Furlong I can understand the consternation but his second tier experience can't be questioned.

Or are we paying the market value for these players?
How do we know if it's an over payment or not?

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

The window isn't too far off closing. I think we can all accept that it probably hasn't gone as we'd have hoped so far in that we've possibly set our sights a bit too high. We desperately need players who will improve the squad which all 3 of these will, so no issues from me with bringing them in

Would you rather we carried on trying for the likes of Hackney and risk getting no-one in?

This is it - it's not as binary as that and you're doing the classic internet thing of assuming one group of people all think the same thing and hold another opinion which you deem contradictory when it just isn't the case.

This is my concern but not sure if it’s a fair assessment. My perception may be off. Others are generally positive so that’s reassuring

The reaction from WBA fans are exactly the same as Leicester fans were for McAteer.. 'Would drive him there myself for that price' seems to be common recently.

The affection for Broadhead meant that comments fell well short of that but the consensus seemed that a deal that could earn the club £10m was great business. Wait and see what we get for Johnson and the comments that follow on here when it’s more than what we’re paying for Furlong.

£4m in the current market does not get you much. An experienced, regular starter in an established championship team at the peak of his career for that price seems about right.

Do that means Ashton’s “scary” list of targets were pure bs then?

Looking at the players we have signed so far, none can be considered “scary” even at Champ level.

He might as well have put Son, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Jack Grealish at al on the list as well, what’s the point?

Looks like we've moved our focus from players with Premier League ambitions, Hackney or Azon, for example, to solid Championship performers.
