Aren’t we supposed to include one in the squad?

One in the 25 - who I presume is Humphreys.

the rule is you have to have at least one player in your 25 man squad. we have two.

it makes no difference if they're on the bench or not

In all three EFL leagues, clubs have to name at least seven home grown players among their matchday squad for any one game.

Clubs also need to name at least one club developed player in their matchday squad; if they don't, they must name one fewer player on their bench.

We had 9 on the bench today, is there someone in the matchday squad who doesn't make it?

Except it not matchday but entire declared squad. Article 34.11 of the current EFL rules.

Not really much of an incentive to bring through academy players when you just have to name just one academy player in the 25, and he never even makes the matchday squad to get the full allocation of 9 subs.

I agree that the balance is wrong, but I’m just pointing out what the rules are as written. Lots of people confuse Homegrown and Club Developed, and what the actual requirement for matchday/squad list are.

It’s all in the EFL handbook for checking

I’m aware of the distinction between squads and matchday squads, and homegrown vs club developed (must’ve been at Town for a year prior to their 19th birthday) but the article I shared implied this:

‘Clubs also need to name at least one club developed player in their matchday squad; if they don't, they must name one fewer player on their bench’.

We didn’t in ours last night, but still had the full 9 subs. If that article is wrong then fair enough, I’ve not seen the official laws, was just going off that from FourFourTwo, which admittedly is a year old so maybe out of date (or just incorrect).

I agree, partly, but as the season wears on and injuries take their toll (other cliches are available...cliche that that is) I can see an incentive to bring club developed players through and at least give them a place on the bench. I think we are allowed to do that if they were under twenty one at the start of the calendar year, aren't we ? Or does there have to be an 'r' in the month ? Uranus sits in Sagittarius ? To be honest I'm still a bit worried that someone at the EFL is setting out the tarot this morning and is about to deal the death card on last night's game.

I made the effort to read that so I understand you and others to be right. What I don't understand is why they talk about the Squad List OR the Team List. Shirley, to be in the Team List you have to be in the Squad List? OR am I barking up the wrong tree completely? Or completely barking?

I just think they make the rule so slack it's so easy to avoid using academy players. Even the wording " home-grown" player is confusing. Means a player who comes through the system in any team in the UK.
Why not enforce it that if you want 9 subs... make sure you have a club developed player in the matchday squad. ie Humphreys instead of Taylor, for instance. Or stick an under 21 as a sub. Laws seem to be in place more as a get around.

This was discussed on TWTD recently with Phil saying there had to be a club developed player in the 25 player squad.

Personally would be happier if could find this in black and white.

Google AI, which I suppose is a glorified search engine, doesn’t agree with Phil

“In the EFL Championship, clubs must include a "club-developed player" in their matchday squad, which is defined as a player registered with the club for at least a year before the end of their Under-19 season. Failure to do so results in the club being allowed to name only six substitutes instead of the standard seven or nine. “

If Google AI is right we broke the rules last night.

But what would be the point of sticking one on there, that isn’t likely to make the pitch from the probable substitutions… what is the benefit of having 9 over just having 8 and not bothering?

As far as I can see all that AI does is go on a superfast and superextensive trawl through the data that it owns, if the data is wrong there is no intelligent process at work to question that.
