The mental side of the game 23:12 - Nov 28 with 928 viewsIP1Blue

We’re miles off of it in terms of mentality - we’ve forgot the value of 3 points!

23/24 side had an abundance of guts and determination to win 3 points - every game the 3 points was worth putting the effort in and not thinking we can wait until the next game to get us out of trouble, hence why we scored so many late goals - we had an inner belief about us!!

This side doesn’t have the same mentality. It’s almost as if they think they can make up for it in the next game. It’s really difficult to watch at times, the lack of urgency and desire to be positive at times is alarming! We take no risks on the ball in an attacking sense, it’s all so predictable! They forget that the 3 points is the most important thing! it took us 30 games to lose 4 games in the 23/24 season but only took us 17 games season and realistically it should be 5 with the Blackburn game being called off, which took us 37 games in the 23/24 season!

We’ve been poor all season apart from a few spells - it’s really alarming but I think it’s being papered over by other teams being really bad and inconsistent as well. The result tonight was not a shock based off our performances over the last 2/3 games, it’s been coming!

Largely agree with that, hopeless crosses into the keepers arms or Kipre just chilling on the ball down 2-1. Not sure who we think we are at times.

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

Oxford setup in a style which is very much our krytonite but the first goal is particularly costly and highly avoidable

Defensively we are better than that promoted side but we are far more ineffective going forward, the balance isn't quite right, the team work and movement isn't as good.

We don't quite have the variety or extremes of that side yet, which we may address in January still. We lack pace particulatly which would stretch teams and open up space, we don't have a heading monster like Moore who you need for opposition like this

Oxford bullied Philogene and Nunez at times too, they always came in hard on those likely to create and it worked

They have got points of Boro and Coventry, they're clearly pretty good at this backs to the wall mentality against the more talented sides

I'd question whether 4231 is always the answer against sides like this
Should we be looking at a 352 or 3232 or 343 etc?

We have to have a solution against sides like this if we want automatic promotion

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

For a month plus I have felt McKennas time is up I feel we will limp along win a couple lose the draw a couple I certainly don't trust him to spend in January.
This has gone on for 18 months .I thank him for 2 fantastic seasons but hardly any other clubs would have not made change .

Why the down vote for this? Yes I get irritated by some of the 'specials' on here that only pipe up when we do badly. However, there are also too many on here who are looking at McKenna through too rose-tinted spectacles. If he can't produce a consistent tune out of this squad by Jan he should be in fear of his job.

It's not rose tinted spectacles is it though, it's a different viewpoint to yours.

The only issue with your viewpoint is that sacking McKenna would be seen by most Town fans, and almost every neutral in football, as insanity.

Apart from that you may be onto something.

Mid table eh. Last time I looked we were in the top six.

Best to not look after 5 pm today if anyone’s paying any attention to the table. We’ll be down a fair few places.

As it's still November, I'll probably not bother getting too excited about the table either way anyway.

Bit of a blurb below, I’ve definitely been f**ked off at times this season with the lack of urgency or reluctance to play more direct, but I do remind myself where we’re at as below…

The team that got us back to back promotions started at our lowest point as a club. A time when misplaced passes were not groaned at as it was refreshing to see us passing rather than “lumping” it.

We now find ourselves at a time when not so long ago we were the shining light of global football following back to back promotions with a young exciting manager and superstar investors. With all that comes higher expectations and more pressure. You then add in the huge overhaul this summer and KM’s like of rotation, we’re really seeing players struggling to gel quick enough with the league games flying by, players struggling to perform under the pressure which all ultimately leads to frustrating performances like last night.

It’s the top end of the pitch I find most frustrating and where I think the rotation is hurting us the most, specifically the striker and 10 roles. KM needs to pick two and run with them and let them build chemistry together. I feel like it would be Nunez and Azon for me…Nunez is clever and confident on the ball (minus his ball control this week!?!) and I do think Azon with a run of games would get us goals. That said, I’d welcome Chaplin in a heartbeat…not just for his play but for character too. All these new faces, some from different nations and leagues, and clearly some don’t feel like they can raise their voice yet within a club that so many eyes are on following recent success.

Poll: How much did you actually think Mick would spend in January?

Said this last night but Mick Mills made a similar point on the radio post-match - we do seem to get rattled and start playing within ourselves when we concede or make mistakes and if we do manage to muster up any positive reaction we don't often sustain it or make the most of it.

Wouldn't go as far as saying we've been poor all season but do think some of the chat about how good our underlying numbers are etc. is missing the context of it being a very average division, where only Coventry have shown that by being a level above that you can blitz a lot of the fodder in this league.

The flip side of that is that it does mean the division is very tight and if we are able to pick things up a bit we can get a grasp on the playoffs at least pretty comfortably. The real frustrating thing is that at times it feels like we're not far off doing that but equally there's still a bit too much evidence for me that we're going to continue making things harder for ourselves than necessary for a while yet.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.
