I'm normally grumpy after defeat, but... 13:59 - Jan 25 with 1796 viewsRIPbobby

Yesterday’s performance was not nearly as poor as some have suggested. We created numerous chances, and I believe the early miss from Clarke was significant. While Cooper in their goal made several crucial saves, Walts, our goalkeeper, mostly handled routine stops.

The match undoubtedly unfolded in a manner that suited our opponents, with the long ball through the middle proving detrimental, particularly for two of the goals. Moreover, the referee did not favour us until it was too late, issuing bookings for challenges that went unpunished on their side. It seemed that Pat’s dismissal was an attempt to rectify the referee's earlier biases against us.

If I had been in charge, I would have positioned Casey McAteer on the right midfield. I believe he possesses greater strength and is particularly adept at containing opponents. I maintain that he embodies the spirit of 'Kayden Jackson' and acts as a workhorse during away matches. Conversely, Egeli tends to excel at home, where we dominate possession. When playing away, our strategy must focus on containing the opposition until we can introduce our more skilled players later in the match.

Reflecting on our previous encounter at Leicester, where we were truly dreadful and deserving of nothing, I feel we might have secured a positive result yesterday, despite it having been the style of play that suited them. This performance represented a considerable improvement compared to our outing at Leicester. Moving forward, we should perhaps approach matches with a bit more respect for our opponents. Brammall Lane presents a challenging environment, even when they are not in form.

Good post, yes we did have chances, when it went 2-1 had a draw written all over it,
Tale of two keepers cooper great display Walton not good at all,
Second goal totally avoidable with better keeping,
If we go up a position which will be addressed,

I've only seen the highlights.
It seems that we could have taken earlier chances, we didn't.
The game turned on their first goal. Wilder and Sheffield Utd not content with taking the lead made a big deal out of Waltons challenge. This raised the temperature and we failed to deal with the next 10 minutes or so resulting in a second goal.

As others have said Sheffield United's blueprint down the years has always been based on aggression and hostile atmospheres. For me we seemed to fall victim to this more than a poor "footballing" performance overall.

I personally felt what we deserved out of a fairly poor match. They were up for it, got in our faces and pushed us hard, we wilted in the face of that.

I agree that at 2-1 we were beginning to get on top and it was the third goal that completely killed us but I just don't think we showed enough fight coupled with a few perhaps having an off day.

I didn't feel the atmosphere felt particularly hostile, in fact it all sounded very quiet before Darnell went down with a broken brain.

It's not the end of the world, we'll play better next time out and maybe it will add some ambition to a signing or two but personally felt that while we started brightly and begun to look like we might get going after we got the pen I honestly felt they deserved the points.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

That seems a fair analysis. Just need to improve and move on.

What I found inexplicable was why did we still allow them to press so high up in the second half when we had to score. Passing was terrible yesterday, how many times did our plays pass straight to the opposition, and we were second to every loose ball.

I don't mind losing, but the manner of defeat was pathetic. Just look at the body language of the players after going behind.

Agree with your last comment, Bramall Lane is a very intimidating place to go. They really are a huge club in this division in a false position.
Quite what O Shea was doing for the Second goal I don’t know. That changed our whole situation.

How many pints did you have before the game?

Yesterday was bad, our main chances came from then putting us directly through on goal and giving the ball away.

At Leicester we had an excellent move that Clarke should have buried to make 1-1 as well, we didn’t have much of that on Saturday.

We’ve had our best run of the season and no need to panic but I thought it was pretty shocking yesterday myself, no ball retention, patterns of play, bullied in the middle, terrible touch all over the park and a performance littered with mistakes. At what Leicester (which was also bad) you at least could give them the worldies.

They weren’t good as such but had more about them to impose themselves on the game. We let them dictate how the game was going to go, that’s part of the problem, had no presence on the ball. Wilder done a job on us and it was a bit of a throwback to earlier in the season at times, looked rather weak. When was the last time we gave up that many chances?

We weren’t at the races and I think KM didn’t have his best afternoon albeit we were slightly short handed in key positions.

Let’s hope we can get a couple more in, if this season doesn’t end up how we all want the striker discussion will be the loudest this summer I fear. All that said we have been in a really good run and if we get 6 points in the next 9 days the return will still be excellent.

We should burn the tape from Yorkshire though. Poor day at the office.

Whilst we did have some chances and there have been quite a few poor away performances this season, I thought yesterday was our worst away performance of the season because we didn't really put up much in the way of fight.

Good summary. I thought the ref was very poor. He was just waiting to give a free kick at one of our corners. Can't recall if it was Greaves or O'Shea he was lecturing before the kick, but you could tell the moment the ball came over he was gonna give them the free-kick. And he did.
Their balding midfielder was in the ref's ear all match.
But, we allowed ourselves to be bullied. Unfortunately Hirst and Sindre did not do themselves any favours yesterday. And our midfield needed to be tougher a la Morsy.
But the blunts deserved the win. They had a plan and for whatever reason we couldn't counter it. I thought we might drag a draw out if it after Jack's penalty, but our attacking play was not precise enough.
Not a disaster. We can't win 'em all. But I hope we win all the rest.

Watched it overseas so 0 pints. It was a pulsating encounter. A bit like an fa cup tie from the old days. We played a big part in it being a battle. Was much closer than the scored suggests and everything went their way on the day. Happens sometimes. Don't get me wrong we made mistakes. It happens.

It was a poor footballing performance from us; the unforced errors were as bad as anything I’ve seen from us this season. We lacked any sort of touch, cohesion and quality for large parts. That aside, you’re roughly right. Early chances missed got us off on the wrong foot, but it was an even and scrappy game up til their first. Then we fell apart for the rest of the half and started the second badly. We then started to play a bit and looked like we were going to get back into it, but again as soon as their third went in it was game over. Apart from a 10 minute spell at the start, and a 10 minute spell around our goal we didn’t look convincing. We were well beat.

The second goal they scored was a joke, how many times we failed to clear the ball away even though we had 5, 6 players in the box, we allowed them to line up and take THREE shots one after another which no one attempted to even force wide or block. You don't even see such scenes in Sunday League. Shocking.
