I have not seen it reported elsewhere yet. They are saying that the American Navy will stop any shops that pay a toll to Iran for access.

Anyone seen this reported anywhere else?

Iran is unable to find the mines it laid in the strait of Hormuz and does not have the capacity to remove the explosives, preventing Iran from allowing more traffic through the waterway, the New York Times reported, citing US officials.

Iran laid mines in the strait of Hormuz last month after the US and Israel declared war against the country, dropping explosives throughout the waterway with small boats.

The US was mostly unable to monitor the small boats that were mining the strait, leaving the country uncertain about the location and number of mines in the waterway.

Moreover, one area where the US Navy lacks equipment and skills is mine clearance. Unlike the Royal Navy, which has somewhat specialised in it over the decades, they have few proper minesweepers - which are all currently in the Pacific.

Even if they had the minesweeping capability, those ships would need protection from Iranian shore missile batteries - in turn putting larger vessels at risk at short range in confined waters.

It's contrary to the UN convention on the law of the seas, the countries that have ratified that do not include Iran or the USA.

Doubt it would have made much difference if they had.
