I'm still worried about striker options 08:14 - Aug 6 with 4546 viewsgreeneking24

Against popular opinions I rank our current strikers in this order

Hirst - a confident Hurst can do a job, but would prefer him as an off the bench player
Emmerson - raw attributes, but has he got what it takes from the get go?
Akpom - impresses at times but don't see him at top. Level

Recruitment so far has been excellent for a newly promoted team.

Hopefully we have someone on the radar as a number 1 striker or are we less reliant on a number 9 with GON tactics. I don't know the answer this question?

Anyway always enjoy other opinons

I don't see that there is too much point in worrying until the Sunderland game.
We only have a week or so after that.

FWIW I think we'll see two more strikers come in, probably one of which being U21

I don't see where our goals will come from. Emersonn who knows to be honest. When Nuñez plays he hasn't hit a decent free kick since QPR away. Clarke looks lightweight and Philogene wants out. Don't even talk about dead balls.

I hate to say it, but we're probably in reality a goalkeeper, 3 defenders, 3 midfielders and 2 forwards short of being anywhere near staying up anyway!

….2 of which we signed this summer.

I reckon that’s enough.

Agreed. So far I have not seen anything from Emmerson to give me confidence that he will be up to the task for the season ahead. Can't think of a single effort on target in the friendlies.
I would rather start with Hirst up front....and that worries me greatly.

Im less worried about a striker, a good one will help, im looking at the creators and those behind retaining the ball at the top of the pitch. If that group could contribute box entries, shots and ball retention we will improve dramatically compared to last time.

How many did Delap score in the 24/25 friendlies?

We are not going to sign Emersonn for 26 Million, or whatever it was, and play Hirst or Akpom ahead of him.

I think we need two new strikers. One with experience.

Looks increasingly likely Hirst will be sold.

Despite a good pre season, big question marks over Akpom at this level. Third choice amd starter in the cup competitions though.

You've just made a point that you were concerned about Emersonn because his pre-season performances have not given you confidence that he will be up to the task for the season ahead.

I can only presume you also thought the same of Delap as he had very little involvement in four pre-season games in which we scored 4 goals total?

Seems pretty relevant when talking about our current striker, to compare his output to our last successful PL striker who had a very quiet pre-season.

I have one eye on the Guiu situation at Chelsea. They have a surplus of strikers and in the last game (I think) Delap was on the sub bench, but Guiu wasn't.

If by the Sunderland game there is not a team on display that can give the other sides a game there has to be a serious review of the recruitment processes.

With Hirst going we have Chuba and Emmerson, not sure that's going to work.

I hope they pull something out of the bag and don't start to panic like last time round.

If there is but one thing I could modestly complain about regarding our wonderful owners and Ashton Number 1, it’s their continual failure to secure centre forward targets.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

I’m pretty confident we’ll bring in one more.

I think prem experience is massively overvalued (of course you need some across the squad)

What matters is if the player has the attributes to succeed. Look at Brobbey, no prem experience but European experience and the physical attributes to succeed.

Here are some options I really like:

- Zian Flemming
- Nikola Krstovic
- Franculino Dju
- Ricardo Pepi
- Pavel Sulc
- Rayan Fofana

It’s worth pointing out Maeda and Enciso both have experience playing as a 9 and could provide 3rd / 4th choice cover. This could allow Akpom to move on and free up a squad space (Also assuming Hirst leaves)
- Maeda as a presser / run in behind option.
- Enciso as a false 9.

In a squad of 25 you really need 10 goalkeepers. 11 ideally.

don't think we can be sure of that.

part of the player trading model is to bring in a youngster, improve them, then use them or sell them on.

doesn't mean they're immediate first choice (see also walle egeli)

even if hirst stayed, i'm sure we'll be looking at bringing in another striker

We are not Brighton, we need to stay in this league this season and worry about everything further down the line.

I think Enciso, if he comes provides cover as a striker , plus we’re clearly looking for and experienced one too. Would be happy with that New Signing, Emersonn, Akpom and Enciso (hopefully)

He's had diddly squat service in about 100 minutes against sides that have for the most part sat back against us. He's had very little space to run into.

I think we've bought him for fast counter attacking football, I don't think we've bought him as a 20 goal a season premier league striker in the making.
