But of course they wait until they are in front of thirty thousand people before doing so rather than privately mulling over the game at the end of the day...

| Why are there so many "religious" players now? on 13:58 - Sep 13 with 2869 views | NthQldITFC | Each to their own. Personal religious beliefs don't really harm anybody (or they shouldn't), but I'd agree with the inference that organised religion and the tribalism around it are dangerous in direct way - wars, persecution etc. - but far more so in giving people irrational excuses to ignore science, the science which has given us all the good and bad changes we have since we left caves. Ignoring science - either with or without a religious reason - is likely to very soon be the end of us in one way or another. Believing your particular sky pilot will save you because you've read the right book and all the others are false is clearly ridiculous. If one religion is true, then surely all others are, and yet we've never seen any evidence for any of them. By the same token, they are exactly the right way to manipulate human beings and were therefore always destined to evolve. | |

Yes. Have worked with a few. There's certainly some good philosophy in the origins of all of religions which evolved in all or most of the discrete tribes of the world, but it's the literal belief in multiple self-contradictory stories, and negative actions (or inactions) which are carried out in the name of them which are becoming too big for the natural world to handle. And as I say, if they didn't exist, they are exactly the right thing to invent to control and manipulate human beings in their fear of non-existence, which tells a pretty inescapable story as far as I am concerned. Probably dowm to the diversity of players in our leagues now, with distinct and different religious cultures who are more demonstrative than English folk tend to be, and/or feel inclined to express and assert their backgrounds because they are somewhere foreign. And a bit of performativeness too.

I don’t think it’s religious bigotry. that’s a complete overreaction.
| Why are there so many "religious" players now? on 14:40 - Sep 13 with 2602 views | Illinoisblue | What I find fascinating is many athletes over here are very quick to very publicly praise God when their team wins an important game or championship; this happens with high school, college and pro athletes. “To God the glory” they say. Yet whenever these athletes lose a big game or get injured you never hear them questioning god’s plan for them. It’s the cherry picking that gets me. | |

Religion still a bigger part of culture in South/Latin America, southern Europe etc than it is today in UK. Think you'd see the same or more if you watched Spanish. Italian, Brazilian, etc domestic matches.
