Middlesbrough and Sheffield United Linked With McAuley Thursday, 10th Sep 2009 00:00
Town central defender Gareth McAuley is being targeted by Middlesbrough and Sheffield United, according to conflicting reports this evening. One national newspaper claims the Northern Irishman is on the verge of joining Boro on loan, while another says the Blades are set to make a move.
McAuley, recently replaced as captain by Alex Bruce shortly after boss Roy Keane denied reports of a bust-up, was understood to be the subject of a £1 million offer from Middlesbrough, who Town face on Saturday, close to the end of the transfer window.
The Blades are said to see McAuley as a replacement for Matthew Kilgallon, who is expected to leave Bramall Lane in the near future.
Town targeted Sheffield Wednesday’s Richard Wood during the transfer window and it’s unlikely that manager Roy Keane would allow McAuley to leave unless the Blues had secured another experienced central defender. The 29-year-old is contracted to the Blues until the summer of 2011.
From Tuesday of this week, Football League clubs were able to loan players from other English sides for up to 93 days.

Is it actually a FACT danknott that Keane and McAuley have fallen out? He was played against Preston, and put in 110% effort, two things I'm sure would not have happened if there really had been a bust up. I have seen a few of your posts and so far all your so called facts don't appear to be anything other than your own self obsessed view from within the confines of your bedroom!! My own opinion of course!!

i think mcauley is a very good defender but he is playing with the weight of the world on his shoulders which is why i think roy gave bruce the armband and not on ability. he was to blame for the first goal in last nights international as he left a player unmarked in the box but he will gain the confidence and be back at his best for us soon. keep the faith

I would prefer to wait until January - maybe he will improve now he is no longer captain - he did get better during the latter half of the 08/09 season.

Streety86 - I don't think anyone has a problem with useful and constructive criticism of players, tactics etc. Like you say - if anyone doesn't do their job properly then they deserve to be put straight. I think what is getting a lot of peoples' goat is the relentless negativity, complaining, and booing etc. Too many fans seem to like having a pop at players without offering anything constructive in return. Players are only human and they will make mistakes. Constructive criticism will help them, but booing every time they touch the ball will not. Just seems that in the last couple of seasons we as a club have become a load of grumbling old women! With all due respect to elderly females of course ..... just a turn of phrase! I always think back a few years when Arsenal absolutely stuffed Pompey at Fratton Park both in scoreline and footballing style. The Pompey players were brushed aside for 90 mins, but their fans NEVER stopped singing! Regardless of the fact that their players just didn't perform that day (and lost 5-0 I believe), rather than booing and getting on their backs, they cheered, sang and jumped about and gained the respect of the footballing world for their positive attitude. Stoke fans have been praised for the same good attitude and acting as a real 12th man. Too many of our lot seem to want to get rid of a player as soon as he makes one mistake! I think we as fans, and the players and manager woudl all benefit from a bit of chilling out and being a bit more positive. After all, we could all be supporters of that sorry lot 45 miles up the A140 .... things ain't so bad here really!

Dobbie - I remember that match. How good are Pompey supporters?! Thierry Henry was playing and every time he went near the touchline by a certain section the Portsmouth fans sang (to the tune of Here We Go) Va va voom, va va voom, va va voom. Henry thought it was hilarious!

I'm surprised there seem to be quite a few people who thought he played well against Preston. I thought he lacked confidence, composure, and a competitive streak. How many times between him and Smith did they allow the ball to bounce from their long punts forward?! Attack it, be dominant, it's schoolboy stuff. When any of the defence (Bruce apart) had the ball at their feet that game, they just seemed so on edge. Also, any defender during a game has opportunities to put in a few crunching tackles to let the attackers know they are there. Bruce does it which is what gets the crowd on side. McCauley doesn't do basic things like that enough, or should I say hasn't so far this season. He's a big enough bloke to put his weight about a bit, which in turn would get his confidence going, which would then get others going around him!

I think we need a compromise....all those whinging moaning booing a$$holes we have for supporters thinking they are clever by useing platitudes such as McAwful (I bet it took you lot a while to think that one up) why don't you feck off and go support the budgies. You can help swell thier massive support, and leave the supporting of this club to people that love this club and will support anyone wearing the blue shirt. Deal? Whoever posted the video...excellent what I have been saying for ages.

Saw him down the gym at lunchtime. He was with a ITFC trainer, running his socks off, honestly believe he will stay and he has something to prove to Keano and a th moaners! Considering he played last night for NI and he was training hard the next day means he is out to prove something in my eyes!! Personally feel this is a fantastic boost for us........... well, either that or he wants to be fit for a medical elsewhere..!
