Garvan: I Need to Knuckle Down
Garvan: I Need to Knuckle Down
Monday, 14th Sep 2009 11:55

Midfielder Owen Garvan says he is determined to change Roy Keane’s mind and get himself back in the Town manager’s plans. Garvan has been left out of the Blues squad since being subbed at half-time during the defeat at West Brom last month.

Speaking to an Irish paper after he had skippered the Republic of Ireland’s U21 side to a 1-1 draw in Estonia last week, Garvan said: ”Every player at the club has chatted to the manager. At this moment in time I’m not really in the squad or in his plans.

“That’s down to me to knuckle down and show that I deserve to play in the Ipswich first team.

“I was surprised that he made that decision, in that I want to play in the first team and have been there for the last couple of seasons. I want to keep my place.

“It’s frustrating that I wasn’t in the squad for the last one or two games. That’s football, you’ve got to deal with things and get on with it and that’s what I’m doing.

“He’s the main man. People can say this, that or the other, but if one man doesn’t like you you’re going to struggle at a football club. I’ve got to do well in training and show what I can do and hopefully change his mind.”

Talk is cheap lad, shut-up and tell us about it after you have played 25 games on the bounce and scored half a dozen goals.

I think he could be a very good player, if he wasnt so LAZY, a great passer of the ball, I think that is what we need to link the middfield with attack, but when he passes HE DOESNT MOVE, he needs to pass, find space and want the ball again. He just watches the game when he doesnt have it. Has the potential to be in the first team, but needs to change. yer i went there

If hes prepared to improve his fitness and agility, then maybe keep him for a little bit longer. However, if not we could probs get a decent price for him now.
Average player at the moment.

gotta say I agree with the majority of posts on here and unfortunately dont believe Garvan will make it at ipswich town, whether thats down to lack of commitmment or just simply not being good enough, no one knows. ive said before on numerous occasions and will say it again now, I think Garvan is the slowest player we have in our squad and in my opinion this is the main reason his game suffers and hasn't developed the way it has been talked about. I have often thought he has been pretty talked up and over rated, to be talked about as being linked with teams such as liverpool and everton is clearly a joke. Hasn't showed tell tale signs of making the grade at ipswich and maybe the time has come to get rid

I agree with most people on this one, Garv is so slow can't find a blue shirt to pass to in the games I've seen this season and hasn't looked interested this season or even the last half of last season.Think it's best for all concerned if he now moves on.

I agree with Markie - he got 7 goals last season from midfield in a bad team. Is he not the longest current first team player from Joe Royle era?? Easily best passer of ball in the club imo and if I recall Royle called him stranger than RK. He is slow and cant head I agree but ITFC have to get back doing what they do best whih is to playing football with Garv in the middle, not the hit and run stuff we play at the moment. He's like Jenas/Carrick when team play well everyone loves them and when they dont people pik at flaws. We need to get rid of Bruce, McCauley & Delaney, all terrible and Delaney is slower than Garv. David Wright is the best defender at the club and he is training with the u-18's??? A lot of people on here seem to think Garv/Wright arent committed but they just arent in RK's plans. Keane picks the team and if we lose tomorrow questions have to be answered.

I can't believe the criticism Garvan is getting here. Our most creative player who's been performing for years but you think Keane is right to bring in a load of Irish past its, ex Sunderlands and Utd reserves? Take a look at the table. Garvan plays better with better players but dare I say Keane has replaced too many with poor, overpriced alternatives.

Garvan is the only creative passer of the ball at the club. We seem to want to fill the team with aggressive cloggers who will look very committed for 90 minutes and write in the press about how we are about to turn things round after another defeat. While every team needs its ball-winners we also need players of the calibre of Garvan who can do something creative with it once we have got it. I hope he does manage to convince this present manager of ours that he is worth a decent run in the team, then I think we will see some of the proper football that most of us have enjoyed at Portman Road over a lot of years, not the kick and hope rubbish we have had to endure so far this season.

quality comment Suffolktractor that is more to the point. I dont think Garv/Wright have lost committment/desire I think they thought RK would bring quality and not quantity to the club

As a Garvan fan I am pleased that the lad has seen the light, true he is slow and is not much in the tackle but neither was Muhren, although I will say Garvan can not hold a candle to the great Dutchman. Garvan still remains our most creative midfieder and rarely gives the ball away and is the one player most likely to provide the pass that would open up a defense. I hope he knuckles down impresses RK and gets his place back as we climb the table

We desperately need Garvan back in favour to make watching football at Portman Road a pleasure again. Six months ago the only players to excite me were Garvan, Haynes and Rhodes, and it's looking depressingly likely that we've now seen the last of them all in a Town shirt.

Hope you get another chance Owen, but like others I wonder if you have been a little lazy in your training and mentality. Clearly something is going on. Sadly, I fear the previous manager let you get away with murder. Therefore knuckling down is all you can do - shame you didn't do that before.

I know who i would rather have on the pitch or bench if we are chasing a goal and its not Trotter ,Healy , Peters or Quinn running around tackling alot does not make goals as already seen this year

jas you are exactly whats wrong with our supporters - he was performing much better than most the first 11 last year. I would say RK justs doesnt like him..simple. Nothing to do with commitment - RK was suppose to bring in quality and what has he brought in PANTS. I reckon Garv is disalusioned and maybe lacks the motivation to play when the manager and club said they would bring in quality.
