Town Sign Portsmouth Keeper
Town Sign Portsmouth Keeper
Wednesday, 14th Oct 2009 19:27

Town have signed Portsmouth keeper Asmir Begovic on a three-month loan. The 22-year-old is a Bosnian international, having previously played for Canadian youth teams alongside Jaime Peters.

Begovic has made only five starts and one sub appearance since joining Pompey’s academy in 2003.

During his time at Fratton Park, Begovic has spent time on loan with Belgian side La Louvière, Macclesfield, Bournemouth and Yeovil.

Having played U17 and U20 international football with Canada, the country where he was brought up, 6ft 5in tall Begovic recently committed to playing for Bosnia, the nation of his birth, making his debut as a sub at the weekend.

Begovic will provide competition for Richard Wright and second choice Arran Lee-Barrett, who is on a short-term contract until January.

Bohemians keeper Brian Murphy is set to join the Blues on a Bosman at the end of the Irish season in November, but won't be able to play competitive games until the transfer window opens in January.

Why a keeper?
Unless he has had enough of Plug's flapping?
Would still like a centreback please

runaround, Wrighty has always been suss in the air and this does not breed confidence in an under pressure defense.
If shane was still around he would have been in the team by now, it will be interesting to see how long Keano will wait before giving him the number 1 jersey. Roll on Saturday.
In Keano we trust

Phil - how long will it be before you post the headline "Asmir Test", should this boy make his debut?

This is a good move although it was not essential. We needed someone to compete with Wrighty and be ready to put the gloves on if Wright gets an injury (God forbid). By the way Asmir is 6'6" toll! Wowwww!
Welcome big boy!

Can't get a CB
Can't get a striker
I know lets get a GK.
You couldn't make it up.

There are some really stupid people around. So, what do you guys think we should do - finding it difficult to bring in the right centre-half or striker, so lets sit on our thumbs and do nothing to improve in our other weak areas. Idiots.

We have no decent back-up for Wrighty, so we need someone else in. Who knows - for all we know, Wrighty might have been carrying an injury in recent matches, anything.

Wright has been at fault for a couple of goals this season granted. But when you come under as much sustained pressure as he has over the last 11 games then the law of averages dictates he will make mistakes. Not sure a keeper is what we need.
Would have liked to have seen a CB come in, but we do have a very under used D Wright sitting in the reserves................................ Who can play anywhere along the back line.

Just in response to the various Richard Wright comments ... I think fundamentally he is a very good keeper (iffy on crosses, granted), but an excellent shot stopper. If his confidence is low, its probably because he feels very exposed by the porous defence. And keepers' mistakes ALWAYS get noticed, being the last line of defence .... maybe this new guy will just take the heat off Wrighty a bit and let him recharge his batteries.

It is a shame that Shane is no longer here as backup, or even as competition for Wrighty. But it seems he fell out of love with the game long before Keano came here, and even he wasn't able to persuade Shane to stay.

Just a question .... weren't we supposed to be getting that Irish chap next month? Maybe that's no longer happening. Anyone have any thoughts on that?

Probably will still go ahead Dobbie,it isnt wise to second guess anyone in football, but maybe there is alittle bit more to it.

Wrighty could be carrying a knock
As you say he could maybe do with a small break to get his confidence back

I assume RK is not impressed by what he has seen from Lee-Barratt, and so the above can happen has brought in cover in tha shape of Asmir.

You never know, if Asmir impresses, he might get offdered a full contract, assuming Pompey want to sell of course

Welcome Asmir! Some more strength in the squad and some added competition for Wrighty can only be a positive. A clean sheet or two would be a real boost for Wrighty and I'm sure he'll soon eradicate the errors - form is only temporary and I'm sure I'm not alone in recognising he has bags of class!! Looking forward to a good week and a few wins!! COYB.
