Chopra Set for Talks With Jones
Chopra Set for Talks With Jones
Friday, 11th Jun 2010 10:07

Cardiff City striker Michael Chopra reportedly plans to hold talks with Bluebirds boss David Jones regarding his future when he returns from holiday next week. Town are understood to have made an increased offer of £4 million to the Welsh club for the ex-Sunderland frontman.

Sources in Chopra’s native North-East claim the one-time Newcastle United player will meet with Jones to discuss whether he is in favour of the move to Suffolk, where he would be reunited with Roy Keane, his boss at the Stadium of Light, who helped him through his well-documented personal problems.

Keane wants to pair Chopra, 26, with 17-year-old Connor Wickham for the Blues’ 2010/11 campaign.

Town owner and chairman Marcus Evans was at the club on Wednesday and the progress of the ongoing attempt to land the former England U21 international striker will almost certainly have been discussed.

Cardiff, who have settled their £1.9 million tax debt, see Swindon’s £1 million rated Charlie Austin as Chopra’s replacement, but face competition for his signature from a number of other Championship sides, including Burnley, Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest.

Well, I have a good feeling about this, and he will be the first proper, top class striker we have signed since Marcus Stewart.
It's a lot of money, but, well, we have it, so why not spend it. COYB.

iv said it before and il say it again, top players dont come cheap, we have the money, we need the players, lets go get him....people will undoubtedly worry about the money, but if we are to go up, we will need to spend, and we all know chopra is top class

You can already see the Hammy headlines about our ChopsWicks partnership up front!

Hope it is sorted sooner rather than later.

I can see the parnership giving a "WICK'ed CHOP" to other teams defence. !!!!

If he is that good why would Jones let him go?

@tractorboybig

He probably doesn't want to lose him, but maybe is resigned to him going. You could ask why Joe Cole and Michael Ballack are leaving Chelsea. Or why Ronaldo left Man Utd. Players come and go, however good they are!

And here's a thought. Maybe, just maybe, Chopra WANTS to play for Keano. Now wouldn't that be one on the eye for the anti-Keane lot, lol.

Average Championship striker with every personal problem going , worth £2 million tops and will almost certainly stay at Cardiff than sign for a bottom 8 club .

Nothing unusual there. Clubs usually talk to players when bids are received. It's polite, if nothing else, to advise the player that another club is interested in signing them and that the club's valuation has been met (or probably will be met). Chopra has years to run on what is probably a very good contract at Cardiff, and whether Town can match that remains to be seen. He may well want to work with RK again, but he appears equally happy working under Dave Jones. A lot will ultimately depend on what the player wants to do, as both clubs appear willing to do business at the right price.

Personally, I remain unconvinced that this is the right deal for the club. ITFC has been burnt too many times in the past by big money signings that didn't make the effort required from them after signing their lucrative contract. Ordinarily, that money could be spent elsewhere on 2 or 3 equally good players, or alternatively pumped into the wage budget, to spread the risk involved and to create a more balanced squad. If this goes through, I hope to be proved wrong.

Must admit, as much as it'd be nice to have a proper striker come in Chopra is not 'top class' he is a decent Championship striker. As such, £4M seems like a lot of money.

As someone else said "we have the money, so go for it" but it's not as simple as that. ME is only loaning the club the money so, while it's nothing to get too worried about, we also don't want to splash the cash for the sake of it.

I'd much rather we built a side, and went for a lower league striker, but sadly that isn't the case anymore, as ME wants results.

so, Chopra, yes. £4M, not really.

Let's not forget, without decent service you could have Rooney, Chopra, or Neil Woods up front and the results wouldn't be hugely different.

We need something in midfield.

Chopra is past his best and why would he move down to a bottom half team as opposed to a play off contender??? Besides, if ME had any sense, Keane will be out by November - tops !!! These pro-Keane fans just love that he is a big name. They probably have Roy Keane posters on the walls in their bedrooms. Get real you dimwits and smell the coffee !!!!

‘Past his best'?? You obviously didn't watch his very good performances in the play off semi finals and final. We created and missed the most chances in the Championship last season so that says it all about our current crop of strikers.

Wickham Chopra partnership. FANTASTIC!

Would be a good addition for us but seems very over priced for a striker who has scored only a few goals more than Stead in slightly more games in the championship over last two seasons at a team in the playoffs as compared to a struggling team £ 2.5 million tops .
Also didnt Keane get rid of Chopra at Sunderland as he thought he wasnt up to the premiership ? £ 4 million for a player to get us up seems a little excessive or the act of a desperate man ,and if injury or loss of form strike that is another massive financial burden ,would rather see two £2 million pound players come in

Must admit, ME is in a difficlt position at the moment.

He must have doubts about RK (as any sane football fan should), so how much money does he let him spend? If he restricts him too much then he hasn't given him a fair go, but if he gives him bundles and he fails the new manager will want to spend too, and it's yet more money he'd rather not spend.

wouldnt spend that sort of money on him. maybe 2m. or why not spend a little less on lambert? also do the deal with spurs. 10m plus conner and gio on loan for next season.

Chopra scored a HUGE 8 goals for Sunderland. And it was Sbragia? who got rid of as apparently he bottled it and missed a sitter against his beloved Newcastle. He was shipped back out to Cardiff the next week.

£4 Miilion is a lot of Money, especially as the player has one of the most well known gambling addictions in football. I'd question spending that amount of money on a player whose head isn't actually 100% focused on the task in hand.
His goal drought towards the end of the season (prior to the playoff) was down to him having to sort out his personal life because of said problem.
Great player but be warned like a lot of Keanes signings he will come with baggage.

Manchester Blue : Which other Keane signings have baggage?

Monkey_Blue added 14:01 - Jun 11
Hmmm, agree Yallop, in that not aware any have baggage in any way close to chopra, but he does have baggage, plenty of it. He's a risk at twice the top wages in the squad and 4m. Firstly paying him double anyone else is not good for morale and secondly if his form is anything like it was second half of the season, it'll cost us 1m a game

@Ipswich-elvis
@surco
@manchester_blue

Im genuinely baffled by the lack of knowledge some posters on here have and the twisted logic they use to have a moan....

Chopra scored 16 for Cardif this season for a start.....even the most non ipswich fan who lives on the outskirts of Ipswich in Canada knows John stead has not scored anywhere near that amount and anybody watching the two of them would pick chopra all day long his vision for an incoming pass is exceptional for example ...

when he only scored 8 for Sunderland it was for a premier league team....

PAST HIS BEST???? you are truly insane how can someone be past their best at 26....lol

The most of the field problems you could have....and the worst gambling addictions in football? umm im pretty sure "HAD" is the missing key word there and if he has the character to have gotten over that then that would be a tick in the reasons id buy him column not the other way round.

AS for why would he sign for us? Keane was the one who got him out of those PAST problems and Chopra has said openly he wants to play for a Keane team again and Players and their agents are a lot more intelligent to only look at a teams position in the league the season before to make their decisions

As far as the £4m goes i wouldn't pay much more than that for him but i would pay more than that for a striker but those ones aren't really available unless you have only just been relegated and expected to go straight back up.

The only reason some people are thinking its to much is because we have never spent any decent money on a proven and experienced 1st team striker we have only ever bought premier reserve teamer's like David Johnson or League one flyers and that's to much of a gamble unless its your only choice £4m is a perfectly acceptable fee in this day and age for a stirker who is someone else's regular player and just went to play off final we paid 2.5m for one of the leagues best midfielder's 2 years ago for cripes sake lol and strikers are much hotter property

I wonder is some 'Ipswich fans' are ever happy. I don't know why I bother reading the comments pages sometimes as its all such negative bollox.

Chopra would be a great signing and just the sort of player we need to get ourselves higher up the table. Keane needs to be given the time that he asked for i.e. the 2 years before people start calling for his head.

Come on the blues
