Town Announce Squad Numbers Thursday, 8th Jul 2010 10:44
Striker Connor Wickham has been handed the number nine shirt for the 2010/11 season. The 17-year-old takes Pablo Couñago’s number with the Spaniard one of several players who have been moved out of the ‘first 11’.
Aside from Couñago, Alex Bruce goes from being Town’s number five to 21 and Owen Garvan switches from seven to 17. All three were amongst the eight players recently made available by the Blues, with only Lee Martin from that list getting a number between one and 11, picking up the final shirt.
There are various other moves with skipper Jon Walters going to number 10, David Norris switching to eight, Damien Delaney to five, Shane O’Connor to three, Jaime Peters to two and Brian Murphy to one. Kevin Lisbie gets 33.

All these integers is very boring and conventional. I suggest that when a player is not fully fit his squad number is changed to reflect this - Walters could go through an entire season with 9.75 on his back (and still be the hardest working player on the pitch). And then ability and effectiveness could be incorporated too, -23.867594532 for Priskin?

So with Jaime Peters given the number 2 shirt, could we say that he is our first choice Rightback?>

Pablo will actually be in tears about loosing the number9 shirt, he suited that number, Still think he can do a job for us if played and looked after correctly!

NW10: it looks that way and I agree that at present he is... I also like what RK has done here, it's actually very clever (Unless I'm reading too much into it, which I am known to do...) Firstly for those he sees as his "current" best 11: Gives them an arm around the shoulder, it's your place (shirt) to loose, as it stands you are my first choice "insert position here" and if you put in hard graft and work for the team you should remain my first choice. For those he wants rid of: Your not my first choice, I needd you to go out there on a daily basis in training and prove me wrong, go on, shove it down my throat, so I have no choice but to pick you. For those who didn't have 1-11, but now do.... all I said before but with spades, must be a massive morale boost. For the young lads in the squad like Billy Clark; your not 44 anymore your 25... your my backup, prove to me why you should be my first choice... A bit of both carrot and stick. Decisions that I think say even more: Wickham as number 9... Conor you are the man, I said when we offered you the contract you would be and I'm backing that up with actions... go on my son. Martin as number 11... (Speculation here) Lee, I know you are one of the eight, but actually I want you to stay, I think you have what it takes, but I'm being pushed into reducing the numbers/wage bill and you are on a fair whack. Go out there and do what I know you can do and you will be my first choice. I know you can do it, now prove it to the owners supporters so I can take you off the transfer list. As i said, just my views...

SiBo - I hope you are right and I agree with what you say. Whether on purpose or not Connor must be as chuffed as bits to be given the number 9 shirt.

SiBo, couldn't agree with you more, good post. I still believe we will see a couple of signings, once we see some of the dead wood moved on.

A 4-3-3 formation will really play to our best players (Walters) strenghts... I can see us having a good season with Walters / Wickham / Martin or Civelli up front. PS. Can't this Ipswich Elvis guy be banned he is obviously a nodge fan on a not-that-funny-any-more wind up?

Good old Roy, subtle as a brick! A little disappointed to see Garvan and Counago so publicly moved down the pecking order, if we can't sell them it'd be a good idea to keep them on side as there is no point them rotting in the reserves. Happy to see Lee Martin still in the frame, because he clearly has plenty to offer if Roy can get it out of him, and despite what I said about Pablo, Wickham deserves the number 9 shirt more. Lisbie at 33 is hilarious though! Whinging twonk is lucky to get a number at all.

Pablo and Garv need to stay they are both good players that can do good jobs for us, Pablo and priskin can work and I reckon likewise with conor. Garv and leadbitter int middle sounds awesome to me, with Norris filling in (as only seems to run around, behind the pace and make a few tackles). I really can't see Martin improving, seeing as he was awful last year and keane doesn't really have the knack of getting the best out of players, including Martin himself, priskin and Edwards. I think civelli can do his job and better. Despite the Edwards comment I would keep him as shown glimpses of class ( although shame rosenior left as they had a good parrnership). 3 up top could work with Walters wickham and priskin or civelli, with Pablo filling in. But saying all this we do need to see some signings come in, in defence, but keep Bruce as well, letting wright go was a big mistake...and a striker and we might be set....but I fear we'll be stuckwith the team I've named as i can't see keane making any signings, or getting the best out of the players and therefore making for another mediocre season and for that reason, I'm out. Keane out

Stop slamming elvis, least he talks sense and doesn't just keane because of the name

Does it really matter who gets which number these days? Of course it doesn't, as for it being an 'arm around the shoulder' by Keane for the first 11, what a load of bullocks!! A good manager would get a good season out of the players in that squad, sadly we ain't got one in Keane, lets hope Ablett's got the man management skills that Keane so obviously lacks. I can't stand another season of dross like the last one!

Nice to be called an Ar$ehole and nice of another bloke who wants me banned????????? Anyway, not that I really care what others think of me but I am going to say this one time. I am NOT a Norwich scummer. Got that?? Second, I want Keane out of our club as he is WORTHLESS. If my opinion differs from yours, it does not mean that I am an ar$ehole or a scummer who needs to be banned. I have my opinion on these various news stories and the purpose of a forum is to express your own thoughts. If you disagree - fine but do not slag someone off if their viewpoints differ from your own. If you see my post - here is an idea. IGNORE IT !!!!

ChambersM- "doesn't just keane because of the name" I don't know what you are trying to say here... so much for "talking sense!". A loyal town fan would support the Town regardless of who the boss is. Also Norris is a much better midfielder than Garvan any day of the week. "He only makes a few tackles" thats his job and he does it well, hence why I think he should play as defensive mid as he breaks up the oppositions play and then makes the simple pass. Garvan doesn't tackle anywhere near as well as Norris and Garvan also shys out of tackles which is a bad attitude for a midfielder as they, in essence, are the first line of defense. I also think that Martin will develop into a great winger, he reminds me of Notts Forest's Anderson i.e has the pace to open up Championship defenses like the red sea!

I am glad Peters has got a regular spot he has been outstanding last season and he can play any position. I bet he could even play GK, despite his height! ;)

I meant doesn't just (like) keane cos of the name, do apologize. Trouble is with Norris he us too much like leadbitter, garvan is the best creative midfielder in the squad. As for Martin, where are you getting pace from? I havn seen any. And btw me wanting keane out doesn't make me any less of a town fan

"A loyal town fan would support the Town regardless of who the boss is" Hmmmm so I and many others who think Keane is sh!te are are obviously not true fans then?? I support the 11 players on the pitch and that is all. The dimwit in charge is leading us all up the garden path and some of you just can't see it. Wait til the fat lady sings !!!!

Glad to hear you support the boys Elvis. I just assumed you were one of the boo boys and I'm sorry about that. There are some people that want ITFC to fail just because Keano is incharge, to me that doesn't make sense. He is only going to get till Christmas and if we aren't doing well he is gone. I want us to avoid a poor start to this season like last season and I think we should all get behind the lads. P.s. I didn't say if you don't like Keano you aren't a true fan, afterall Ipswich Town has been a football club long before Keano was here and will be long after he is gone, I was refering to the people that want us to get relgated because Keano is in charge.
