Jones Confirms Kennedy Deal
Jones Confirms Kennedy Deal
Sunday, 25th Jul 2010 01:30

Cardiff City boss Dave Jones has confirmed that left-back Mark Kennedy is set to join the Blues. News of Town's move for the former Irish international first broke on Friday.

Jones says Kennedy will sign a two-year deal at Portman Road with the sides understood to have agreed a £75,000 fee: "Sparky was offered a two-year contract at Ipswich and they came in with an offer. We think it’s good business for us considering he's 35 [sic] and with only a year on his contract. It's also a sensible move for him, so it makes sense bearing in mind those two factors.”

Kennedy, 34, is believed to have been at Portman Road on Friday and Saturday to discuss personal terms with the move likely to be completed early in the week.

Meanwhile, Jones says Michael Chopra’s comments regarding Cardiff’s current situation have been overhyped: "Chops was foolish to say what he said. He thought he was helping out but he did it the wrong way. He knows he's made a mistake.

"I think his performance today [in a 2-1 friendly defeat at Notts County] showed how committed he is to the club and he's hurting because things aren't going our way right now. Sometimes you've got to put up and shut up though and that's what he's done this afternoon.

"It's been made a bigger issue than what it is - what we want now is to start hearing some positive things come out. There's so much rubbish being written about us at the moment in general."

Yeah I'm happy enough with this. Lots of Championship experience and will shake it up a tad (in a good way)

Keanish - David wright was a prem league 1st teamer when we signed him so I'm thinking he may have been on a fair bit, just a hunch though, regarding Kennedy iv seen alot of posts slating players wev been linked with saying they can't get in the 1st team at there respective clubs, why should we sign them? Kennedy was a regular for a team that nearly got promoted last season that were solid at the back, o'connor is raw and can only learn from Kennedy, I see Kennedy as an old school full back with a naturally stunning left foot, I no it's going back a long time but when he was at man city his delivery was the best I'd seen outside the prem, Its rare that that particular skill diminishes with age, iv long been an admirer of kennedy and I'm glad wev got him, I hope it works out and wish him well.

It's good to see the fans generally pretty positive, maybe its the new season or maybe there are genuine reasons to be hopeful. I will take issue with this Chopra business though.
He's not that good. I reckon he's had 2 and a half good seasons in his 10 years as a full time pro, I think people are getting a bit carried away and we saw what that sort of excitement got us last year.... 219 games, 79 goals - OK, but only really played well at Cardiff for 2 seasons.
He'll help a bit certainly and he might be the sort of player that Wickham needs.....But turning us around... I wouldn't bet my house on it.... I do have a very large house mind.

All we now need is Finnan. We will be top of the league for the oldest defence!

well, not too bad. He was a left-winger too when he was younger - so maybe the plan is to use him, Civelli and O'Connor fairly interchangeably?

Still baffles me why we let David Wright go without even making a contract offer, then went and signed an older player, less versatile, similar quality, who's probably getting similar wages. Says nothing very good about our pre-summer planning.

Seriously underwhelmed, can only be back up, dont think it will make anyone want to come down to Portman Road on 14th August

I think the general consensus is that while this is hardly a signing that will rock the football world to its foundations, Kennedy will be an invaluable mentor for young Shane O'Connor. While O'Connor did well last season, he is much too young to carry the responsibilities of that exposed position week-in, week-out. And who would get the blame if his confidence was shattered by playing too many games and having a few bad ones without a break....? I'm sure he and Kennedy can share that role, acting as backup for each other, with the older head teaching the younger a thing or two.

A very good bit of business, overall. £75k for that much experience can only be a good thing.

COYB!!!!

Most importantly;

Is he actually a good defender??

Remember he started life as a left winger, and only became a left back in the latter stages of his career!!

Questions re his defensive qualities?!

Bit of trivia.... he was Britains most expensive ever teenager when transferred from Millwall to Liverpool.

Surprised Phil didnt pick up on that.

dobbie73: I agree with you here... can only be a good thing, exactly the type of player we need in at left back. Think of it from Shane O'Connor's perspective... He must realise that RK isn't going to just leave him as the only LB in the squad, too much pressure for a teenager in my opinion, so, if RK brings in a 20 something left back... Shane knows he's playing second fiddle for a while and maybe gets down about it. By bringing in an older more experienced player, Shane knows that although he may start as second fiddle, the older player isn't going to be cementing a long term place in the side due to his age and so O'Connor knows he's got the chance of working hard, learning from someone with experience, and making the role his own over the next 18 months as Kennedy's contract runs down. Add to that the fact Kennedy probably realises this as well and I think he would be able/prepared to mentor Shane. Lastly he doesn't cost a packet and so makes little inroads on whatever transfer funds are available. Good signing I think!

As far as the right and D Wright/Rosenior is concerned, I personally would have kept Wright if for no other reason than he can cover both flanks, BUT, I'm not surprised. RK obviously doesn't rate him as he has only played him when he's been left with little choice. I think it is because RK likes attacking Full Backs and you could never describe Wright in that way…

Rosenior, well a legend in his own mind that one… As someone said earlier, was offered a deal in January, declined, so yeah, I'd agree, let him go… we want players that want to play for us, not “keep their options open” for a perceived better deal… And he wasn't that great. Started well and then faded.

Although I can see the merits of this signing, it has certainly got no excitement about it. As Magilton used to say, "I feel lower than a snakes belly".
