Walters Wants Town Exit Sunday, 1st Aug 2010 09:13
Town captain Jon Walters is reported to have asked for a transfer. The 26-year-old has been tipped for a move away from Portman Road all summer with QPR and Stoke both linked.
The former Republic of Ireland B international, who played the full 90 minutes against West Ham yesterday, is said to have made the request but is yet to formally put it in writing.
A fortnight ago, QPR were reported to have had an offer turned down by the Blues. The fee was claimed to be £2.5 million, although more recent suggestions that the bid was just over £1 million appear more realistic.
Stoke have been eyeing the striker-turned-midfielder since 2008 and were again mentioned in connection with a move last week.
Walters joined the Blues from Chester City for a fee of £100,000 plus top-ups, which would ultimately take the deal to £200,000, in January 2007.
Meanwhile, Swansea sent a scout to watch the Blues take on West Ham at Portman Road yesterday. Swans manager Brendan Rodgers is believed to be interested in Blues striker Tamás Priskin, who played under him at Watford. Rodgers is believed to have made a £400,000 initial offer to test the water.
Blues boss Roy Keane is not looking to sell Priskin and has been impressed with him in pre-season, even if the Hungarian international is yet to score.

Not sure I beleive this story... really not sure, but if true... at £1m I wouldn't let him go, but at £2m+ I would, because I'm sure we can get a better wide attacker for that sort of money. Walters has had one really decent season since he moved here and has worked very hard the rest of the time, but not produced the same quality... To me he was the most dissapointing player yesterday... A bit torn on this one... but I really am not sure on this story... I don't believe he has asked to leave!

let him go.another player that we have plucked out of the lower leagues or reserve team football who then thinks they can better themselves elsewhere,i have no time for disloyal players....if the rumours are true

This would explain why he has sold his house and is now renting around the corner from me.

Agree 100% with Jayesses. A divisive manager with few endearing qualities. He doesn't seem to understand that his small world is not large enough to put together, let alone support a team. His concentration seems to be Ireland and Sunderland. Good lord you can't build a team on that. If it costs 3 million to get rid of him it needs to be done.

Even tho I'm not Walters biggest fan. I've got mixed feelings. My head says sale. He's not worth that so its better to cash in. But my Ipswich heart is saying don't sell. He's are captain. What kind of message will this send to the rest of the players? Also my heart says who are we going to bring in and how long will they take to gel. As its 6 days till the opening of the season. But if Walters actually wants to go then maybe we should sell there is no point having a player who doesn't want to be here. They play worse as their heart isn't in it.

Blue041273 Walters had one good season under Jim and Stoke wanted to buy him. Jim refused. Since then, despite giving 100%, Walters has not been anywhere near as good. Not even 50% as good. It is well reported that Walters fell out with Jim (along with most of the squad). If I were Walters I would absolutely want to join a Premiership team. When Jim stood in his way, all of a sudden his form dipped. Luckily, I don't think Roy will stand in his way - no point playing a player who wants to go - if of course this is still Jon's wish.

Stunned. Sell if £2m is on the table, but if true about asking for a transfer to QPR then this is a vote of no confidence in Keane - from his captain of all people. What are the odds now with Wickham injured that we start with only Pabs as a forward? We'll not get Chopra. Keane looks more under siege than Michael Caine in Zulu.

@ Tractorog haha "under siege" are you Steven Seagal in disguise? I think we will do well this season, mark my words. Keep the faith COYB

Again get real all you people - What player with 'AMBITION' would want to stay, or come to Portman Road right now ? Answer: Those looking for an easy meal ticket I guess.

jason0999 - I am amazed you blame Jim Magilton for anything related to Walters - DID HE MAKE KEANE PLAY HIM AS CAPTAIN OF HIS TEAM ? - get back to rational thinking jas - something you HAD a reputation for. You really are defending RK's corner to the extreme. And who spent all last season, and close season, raving over his Captain ? - someone named KEANE.

Shame, but it's true to say that he's had a poor season under Keane. I think we've already seen the best of him. We shouldn't have any player in the squad who doesn't want to stay, so if he wants out we just get the best price. I don't understand why he faded so though....

For those posters that now want Walters to go and are vilifying him as public enemy #1, you need to take a step back and engage brain first. Firstly, it's only vague speculation. Secondly, he put more effort in every game than my other player. Thirdly, I bet you are the same people who were dead happy when chopra whinged about Cardiff, thinking that it may speed up his move to us (but actually puts him in the same greedy / selfish bracket as you seem to be putting Walters). Having said all that, £2.5 would be good money and would stop keane consistently making the mistake of feeling he has to play Walters every game and in a variety of positions, even if he was clearly shattered).

...... probably for the same reason others have done likewise.

Was Walters very good last season no, is a forward no, his best form was when he played wide right and cut in, when the opposition figured out how to play him he was no longer effective. If he goes to the Prem their defences will soon stop him, if he wants to go fine.

The amount of people on here who seem pleased at this story just beggars belief! Even if the story were true and Walters were to be sold, the assumption that getting a 'replacement' in - better or not - is a formality and a piece of cake is well wide of the mark; as illustrated by our near zero transfer activity (in) this summer. If the story is true and I'd be very disappointed if it was, I would imagine Jon's pretty cheesed off that we haven't excatly strengthened this summer... quite the opposite I'd say. That said, I'm always optimistic about the season ahead. COYB!

As this is just paper talk we have absolutely no idea whether this is true or yet another example of some lazy journalism whereby an old rumour is trotted out once again on a slow news day. Therefore we can only offer pure speculation in relation to this story but if:- (a) if this story has any grain of truth to it then I wouldn't want to force him to stay if he wants a transfer because I don't think that a player could be fully committed to the team under those circumstances. Plus if £2.5 million were to be correct that would be good business considering what we paid Chester. (b) however if this is pure media gossip then we should continue to back a player who always seems to put in the effort week in week out leading by example. Going beyond this issue whether Walters stays or goes I like the fact that as in some of our clubs finest days under the likes of Robson & Burley youth is being given a chance. A team built around a solid base of home grown talent is something to get excited about & I believe that these young & hungry players will put in more effort & so a greater desire to do well in a town shirt than some Premiership has been cast off just looking for a pay day from us. It was great to see the impact of Wickham at the end of last season & I'm hoping for big things from the likes of Smith, O'Connor, Hyam, Clark and even though he didn't come through our academy if Hourihane can so anything like the performances of Colback then he will have been a great addition to the squad. Even though Civelli is not a new signing if he can recover from his injury & show anything like his early promise then that is like a new signing after he missed the whole if last season. It will be great if we can sign a striker like Chopra or somebody similar but I certainly don't want to see us held to ransome & sign a player at a highly inflated transfer fee or wages as we don't want to be ripped off & get someone at any cost just because over clubs think we're a soft target due to the money of Mr Evans. I'll support the team whoever pulls on the shirt this season & if some of those are youth products who are given a chance to show what they can do then I'll look forward to seeing their progression as a fine Town tradition of giving youth an opportunity is followed. The Championship is a notoriously unpredictable division with almost all teams able to beat one another on their day. With some luck & passionate support from the stands you never know what may happen & I for one would rather at least start the season with a positive outlook rather than right the year off before a ball has even been kicked in the league. Come on you Blues!

If he wants to move you can hardly blame him. With Evans, Clegg and Keane we have three people with little or no experience in football "in charge".
