Stoke Watch Walters
Stoke Watch Walters
Sunday, 8th Aug 2010 12:24

Stoke City sent director of football John Rudge to watch Town’s game at Middlesbrough on Saturday. Boss Roy Keane confirmed that the Potters have targeted skipper Jon Walters on Thursday, but said the clubs are yet to agree a fee.

Rudge is likely to have been impressed with Walters yesterday as he helped the Blues to a 3-1 win against the Teessiders.

On Thursday, Keane, who hopes to make two attacking signings this week, revealed that talks had continued all summer regarding Walters’s potential switch to the Britannia Stadium.

Meanwhile, striker Pablo Couñago, left at home this weekend, is reported to have had a bust-up with manager Roy Keane after the midweek reserves friendly with Tottenham. Couñago is said to have had to be restrained after reacting angrily to being named on the bench and only used as a 72nd minute sub.

The Spaniard, who has a year left on his current Town deal, is reportedly a target of former boss George Burley at Crystal Palace.

Really cant see Walters going as Stoke are looking to buy two Strikers for a fee of around 15 Million. So what do they want Walters for? and if they want him why are they not just paying what we want.
As for Counago I am afraid we have had quite a few players who think they should always play. They have to look at thierself and ask the question why am I not being picked.
Like Counago but h is not bigger than the club and it was nice to see the youngsters giving thier all and wanting to play for the club.
Counago was on reported 25k a week when he left the first time and now reported 10k a week. He has done well out of Town and he should relise thia

think thats a fair point about counago karlos. would really like walters to stay, i think he showed yesterday what he brings to our team. it does seem however that we will legt him go if stoke meet our valuation. its a tough one tho cos as important as i think he is who leaves will have a big say on who comes in. would we rather have walters, and get scotland and keep stead or lose walters and stead and potentially get scotland and chopra or whittingham?

still, fantastic start to the campaign...coyb

WOH!! Pablo seriously, gr8 player and could easily be in a better eauge than the championship, just he always plays for the name on the back and never on the front. Walters will stay with Ipswich I reckon. At least I really hope soo!!!!!

I didn't think Keane managed the team that played Spurs midweek, I thought Chris Kiwomya did?? So why would Counago have a bust up/have to be restraned from Keane?

We don't need players like Pablo upseting the team. I have always been a Pablo fan, but we always knew he wasn't Keano's type of player - far to lazy. His goal scoring record is also poor.

Stead was also on the bench and got on with job. Pablo needs to realise he is not bigger than ITFC. If the rumours are right, best to get rid.

Re Walters - I fully expect him to leave the club with our best wishes.

If we went for Whittingham and had to let Walters go to get him I would say yes.
Keane said that he hoped to have 2 new in by Tuesday. It looks like Scotland and the big Rumour is Chopra as he is the number one target.
i still think Stead will go if we get Scotland and Chopra with Priskin on the bench
Not sure if we play 4-3-3 how we will fit Chopra, Scotland and Wickham all in the team so it might be a Scotland and a replacement for Walters.
But what a great position to be in.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stoke are after Jon Walters to replace Liam Lawrence, who's going to Celtic to replace Aiden McGeady, who's going to Villa to replace James Milner, who's going to Man City.

So if Man City buy Milner, expect us to lose Walters :^(

I would let him go for around 4.5-5mil as i dont believe he played well last season and the season before. Major let down

As for the Pablo story, if he's unhappy at being a 72nd minute sub, give him a coach trip to Exeter and 90 minutes in the mud on Tuesday night!

Makes sense now and I can see why it takes so long for a transfer to go through. Lets hope it does not happen unless we get Whittingham as he will be missed both on and off the field and I fully agree with Counago having 90 mins at Exeter that will prove his commitment.
Feel let down by Counago if the story is true as on his day he is a game turner, However he now plays more below average games these days

Just been on the BBC sport Web page.

Forrest claim that Whittingham want to join them.
There is an Interview with Dave Jones and he is saying that Chopra is happy at the club and wants to stay. When he talks about the players he has let go he mentions Kennedy and said it was a good price for a 35 year old.
It seems to be a little tounge in cheek so not sure if he really wanted to let Kennedy go and sound to me that if the right offer came in for Chopra they would sell.
Be intrested to hear what anyone else thinks?

Would like to see the deal done asap or not at all. If it is upwards of £3 million then it is good business. Add in some clauses and could be a fantastic deal, although don't we owe some of the profit to Chester? Have a more than capable deputy in the form of Carlos Edwards anyway.

Jones asked Kennedy if he wanted to come to Town and he said yes so Jones had to let him go, I reckon Jones is playing hard to get in the hope that someone makes an audacious bid for Chops. I reckon the longer we hold on the more desperate Jones will get as he will have to pay Sunderland the rest of the money soon. Cardiff bought Chops with money they didn't have and for that reason, in my opinion, they shouldn't make a profit from selling him. He was brought as a gamble to gain promotion and it failed! I reckon we should wait till Jan see how our current strikers are doing then reassess the situation because right now the money Jones is asking for isn't worth it especially as both of our strikers scored yesterday and Wickham is back soon from injury.

If we do sell Walters why dont we put a bid in for C.Eagles, his contract runs out at the end of the year so his fee would be cheaper also he didn't feature in Burnleys match yesterday so he might be out of the managers plans. I honestly dont think Whittingham will have as great a season as he had last season and I fear that after the season he had it inflated his price tag by a lot. I rate Paul Anderson better than Whittingham as he has the pace to get through any Championship defence.

If true re Pablo and even if it isn't just go please Pablo you have taken more out of this Club than you have given and I fear can give no more. As for Chopra/Whittingham I just cannot see Cardiff letting them go as Jones said again today that the owners are meeting him this week and he will be able to buy players. That does not sound like a selling club to me but then strange things happen in Football. I hope we get Scotland now as the Wigan message boards in general say good things about him and he works hard unlike Pablo. I have my doubts about Stoke paying over £2M for Walters but either way I'll be happy as long as the player keeps gving his all for us if he does stay.

Any chance of poaching Dave Jones from Cardiff?

really we only need one more striker in if keane is playing two wide men and one up-front. and I don't see why we should pay over the odds for Chopra when we have Wickham, Priskin and Stead already and possibly Scotland in for 1 million when it would cost aroung 3.5 mill at least for chopra. Scotland is a proven goalscorer at championship level as he proved for Swansea. I also think if we get too many new players in we may have the same problems as last year, like middlesborough and all this stuff about players needing time to gel! if possible it would be nice to keep walters but you cant deny him a chance at the premier league if the right offer comes in. Also if edwards is injured for which looks to be a while, with civelli also injury prone and lee martin off to charlton. i think we are short on wide men which was evident yesterday as we were forced to bring on young reggie lambe. especially if Walters goes then a winger is a priority. Jamie peters also sounded weak at right back which could cause a problem. Scotland may however be able to play on the wing.... but i dont know.

Will be a shame to see Walters go, played well yesterday. I think he'll be out of his depth in the prem, but if we get anything over 3 million we should rip Stoke's arm off.

If we are getting Scotland, i hope it'll put an end to all the Chopra romours, we AREN'T getting him! Cardiff have had their embargo lifted and still have a top Championship team, so why come here? Why now would Keane want him if we have Scotland, Priskin, whom Keane obviously wants to play and come good, Whickam and my guess is that Stead will stay because of his wages and family issues. Anyone who thinks we'll get Chopra AND Whittingham needs help, we are not Man City thank god. It's as bad as the Dos Santos thing last year!

Whilst he is a good player, it'll be deal of the century if we get £4M for him. I'll be sad to see him go, but that could buy us 3 or 4 players of the same ability of Jon, and so would be great business.

Nice one Pabs - great to see you want to play - shame RK isn't of the belief that you have some lovely touches and can actually pick a decent pass. Something David Norris can only dream of doing. RK needs to realise that you probably want to stay and play and start you against Exeter - but he won't.

Walters - cash in. Cost £100k - if we hold out for £4m - good business that. Chopra - watched him against Sheff U..... not his best game, should bring his valuation down! Grab Jason Scotland for £1m - bargain... Although our strikers are scoring freely at the moment...

Slowerball, maybe he would fit into a team that plays in the style that you seemingly advocate but he just isn't in my opinion cut out for a championship push anymore. He can't hold his own against big defenders and recently (past season or two) his touches have been shoddy. Plus away from home he has in the past been consistently anonymous. At fault in the spurs friendly for a breakdown in play and poor distribution more than once, perhaps a move would be a good idea for both parties.

Slowerball - Norris was awesome yesterday. We wouldn't have got the result without him. My man of match by a mile.
