Townsend: We Targeted Brucey Bonus
Townsend: We Targeted Brucey Bonus
Monday, 4th Oct 2010 16:00

On-loan winger Andros Townsend says his team-mates told him that former Blue Alex Bruce was likely to dive in if the Spurs man kept running at him ahead of Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Leeds. Townsend took their advice and Bruce was red-carded for two bookable fouls on the 19-year-old.

Townsend said: “All the players had been telling me before the match about Brucey. They told me to keep getting at him as it would lead him to dive in.

“Luckily it worked out for us as Leeds going down to 10 men had a big influence on the outcome of the game.

“It was frightening how we galvanised after the Leeds leveller and the determination we showed to get back in front again.”

Meanwhile, Bruce had no arguments regarding his second booking once he'd had a look at the video footage after the match: “When it happened I thought I got a touch of the ball for the second yellow, but after seeing a replay I could see that I didn’t.”

Elsewhere, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham are reportedly chasing Town reserve coach Chris Kiwomya’s 14-year-old nephew Alex, who is currently with Rotherham United’s youth set-up.

Townsend is quality. His confidence is pretty unique. He will create a lot of chances this season.

ipswich24 - i think we will sign him along with livermore in a deal that will see connor going to spurs and money our way. keane has already hinted that connor may leave us in january and i think harry is allowing us to trial andros and jake, i dont think its a done deal but i think the 2 clubs are halfway there. i rate connor but i would say that would be a good deal for all.

Yeah Townsend and Livermore look class.
I see Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham are chasing Chris Kiwomya's 14-year-old nephew Alex. Maybe we should try and get him. I'm sure he could stay with his Uncle.

Tw@t? Really?! We all loved Bruce when he was here. Not necessarily the best player but did a good job for us you can't deny that. I still regard him as a bit of a hero. Wore his heart on his sleeve and was a big fan favourite. How you can be slamming him so much is beyond me 'acen'.

Livermore, Townsend and 5-8 million for wickham, we should snap their hands off! We all know what a talent Connor is but his future I'm afraid isn't with us

All this connor talk for 2 appearances from livermore an a handfull from townsend! Getting way to ahead of yourselves. Just because there out on loan, these are youngsters, so its not like they've set out with a view to a permanent move. These players are looking to impress their parent club, as they still have an opportunity to play at the highest level. Its maybe a make or break year for them, especially townsend who has been on loan for a few seasons now, but not with consistency that will help him push for a spot on the tottenham bench, but this sort of form might catch Harry's eye. There all our players at the moment, especially connor, some of this talk is worse than what the Mirror print!

For once I agree with ChambersM. Bruce was cheered by the fans whilst he was playing for us. He deserves a certain amount of respect.

That said, there can be little doubt he deserved his red card and Townsend/Town were right to target him. Unfortunately, despite his hero status, Bruce was somewhat, how do you say, reckless with some of his challenges!

I have to agree that the two Spurs players are excellent loan signings. I very much doubt we will sign them permanently. But at least Townsend is here until the end of the season.

Just as a talking point, if Livermore continues to start (for argument sake), who do you drop: Leadbitter or Norris ...

aren't we forgetting Gio?! He must be part of a deal, which seems unlikely but I don't see Connor leaving this season, possibly in the summer though

I don't think there is any chance of getting Gio - he must be on £40K per week!

"did a good job for us you can't deny that"

And what would that good job be, ChambersM? I remember him running aroiund a lot, but I also seem to remember that when he played for us we were in the bottom half. Doesn't seem that he did that good a job after all does it!!!

Thing is all the fans like you vic will always only remember the bad tackles he made. He was a top defender for great slide tackles as the winger was about to put a ball in, or as the striker was going to put the ball in the net. He did do a good job for us. You're blind if you don't realize that. Plus, can't remember which game it was last year, the header he scored at the bobby robson stand, a brilliant goal and a brilliant celebration right infront of that stand, showed what he was all about. Probably my last best memory of Bruce. I think he'll do a good job for Leeds.

I thought both Townsend and Livermore were involved all the time, in the thick of the action. They both had a good match.

Chambers M, your not right in the head mate. When Bruce was here most of his tackles were a mirror image of tackles made by our so called 'thug manager' ( your words, not mine). How come your so keen to defend that style of play in him and slate RK ?
Go back to the hole you crawled out of at carrot road and dont come back.

Tactics are Tactics, Townsend's done nothing wrong other than try and constantly get past Bruce. If Bruce hasn't the skill or the temperament to stay on his feet or time a tackle than should and was exploited. Points are Points.

COYB.

Got to admit that I had to check my calendar to check it wasn't April Fools day as I too find myself agreeing with ChambersM, with whom I have had a number of disagreements with of late.

Whilst not everybody's favourite player and not blessed with a massive amount of ability, Bruce came in a did a job for the club (it's down to opinion as to whether you think it was good or not), he always gave 100% and put his body on the line more than once and all for the good of the club (albeit for a good pay packet, but there are others who have done far less for far more and been loved).

Defenders often get the sharp end of the poo stick, as they aren't the pretty boys who score the goals and get the adulation (look at the abuse Mac/Delaney got in the first half of last season and in Mac's case the season before that - despite being one of our best players over the course of both seasons!).

Some of the abuse he has received (not just on this comment stream) is a little severe. He is no longer at the club as he was surplus to requirements, good luck to him at Leeds - but not too good! :-), and we all move on.

ChambersM, no, not all of us loved Bruce when he was here. Some of us could see through the tissue thin badge kissing nonsense and marked Bruce down as the money grabbing mercenary, not to mention thoroughly average league one defender he is. He may have got a lot of noise out of the north stand for on-the-pitch commitment and last ditch tackles, but some of us are able to back a player when he is on the pitch despite not rating him and wanting him in the team.

The whole Bruce and his agent vs Magilton episode was utterly disgraceful and for me was a new yard stick for how short-sighted and fickle most fans are.

SouperJim added 09:19 - Oct 5
To follow on from that, anyone who thinks Alex Bruce performed well for us quite frankly wouldn't know good defending if it bit them in the backside. There is a reason why he made so many impressive-looking last ditch tackles and it's not because he was a defender with any real ability.

Whose career has Alex Bruce finished? Theres bad tackles (bruce) and then there's plain dirty trying to injure someone (keane). Big difference my friend.
