Beattie Hits Out at Barnsley Cheers
Beattie Hits Out at Barnsley Cheers
Monday, 15th Nov 2010 15:32

Town legend Kevin Beattie has hit out at fans who cheered Barnsley's players each time they touched the ball during a period in the second half of the Blues’ 3-1 defeat to the Tykes. The former England defender said he’d never seen anything like it in his time in football.

Beattie felt it did the Town players no favours: “I didn‘t appreciate what I heard. In fact I was disgusted. Hearing the opposition being cheered would have put our lads’ heads down and affected their concentration.

“If I’d been out there I would have confronted them and said ‘Lift us, don’t knock us down’. OK, the side might not have been playing well, but fans should not do that. I’ve never heard anything like at any ground or any match I’ve played in or witnessed.”

The former central defender added: “You should never cheer the opposition. True fans keep behind their team and do their bit to try and get them to improve.”

Isn't it a measure of how disgusted (i know how much you like that word beat) most of the fans are with the way ipswich is being run on and off the pitch by Mr Keane. I like to think the ironic cheering and booing got a valid point across, and like many others have said we are not booing the players, its the clueless manager.

I did not olay the Barnsley passing and did not boo the team but I did boo the dreadful substitution Keane made when he took off Priskin. We pay our money and I feel we are entitled to reflect our feelings. Olaying however was an insult to the Club in general including our owner who apparently was present. We all need to be careful what we wish for here because if we push it too far we could lose Evans backing and then we really will be in Division 2. Remember Evans appointed Keane so in a way this continuous lambasting of the Manager and the club is a reflection on him. We need to be very careful especially in view of the latest financial results. Lose Evans and you may not have a Club to moan about.

Yeah thanks Londer, i read that. It's the sentiment i was commenting on not the act. Booing a Chelsea side who rarely ever lose at home, who are top of the league and in the next phase of the Champions league is just as bad.

a couple of people on here saying that after Saturday they were embarrassed to be an Ipswich fan, is that after this Saturday or all the home games on a Saturday in the last 3 seasons?? Our home support is shambolic, we have 1 stand that sings, most of the time during the game when im looking across fans to the other side of the pitch to see the action i see people playing on their mobile phones or reading the paper!! READING THE PAPER!! its a football match not your front room!!

Although i wouldnt boo the team during games as i feel you have to get behind them i can understand the frustrations and as fans we pay alot of money to watch football and should be able to express our displeasure at a lack luster performance, to be honest when our fans were cheering Barnsley it was actually nice to see them string some passes together and not just lump it forward.

We have the most fickle fans i have ever come across and nothing is ever right for them, we need to realise that Ipswich Town Football Club is not the team it was back in the 1980's and we are not a top 6 team far from it until the fans lower their expectations be ready to endure more boos aimed at the team!!

Spot on TJ-Tractor, Cotton-Eyed-Joe (and condolences for your loss), h32

PLUS - everyone seems to have forgotten one crucial thing - I very much doubt if the ole-ing (at least en masse) would have happened if we'd been playing any other team than Barnsley. The fact is that we have a special relationship with them because of their immaculate behaviour before, during and after the POF, which greatly contributed to the brilliance of our day, as anyone who was there will tell you. The ole-ing of their passing on Sat was imo not just a much-needed overt protest to ME and Clegg (would they have paid attention to anything less?), but also us giving a bit of respect back to Barnsley, acknowledging that the tables were turned from that day at Wembley, and a genuine compliment to the good football they were playing, in dire contrast to our own.

Barnsley became many ITFC supporters' "2nd club" after that POF, and I think there was also the feeling that if we had to go down to a home defeat like that, we'd rather it was to Barnsley than anyone else.

a lot of people on here are saying it was wrong to cheer the opposition,i agree,BUT the fact remains, that situation did show just how pissed off the fans are with the way things have been ,and are going with Keane at the club.It did serve a purpose,if that is what it takes to wake the board up ,if its a means to an end ,then so be it. UP THE TOWN,OUT WITH KEANE .

Personally I let out a few frustrated Ole's but then I also sang "Blue Army" - (we need new songs) from the 45-55 Minute and a only handful of people joined in. I ALWAYS back the boys even if the people around me dont. Im at Hull to repent for my few Ole's but it frustrated me that people come on hear and moan about it when the real issue is the people who ole'd werent just frustated with the performance, but frustated with people who dont join in chants, stand there and moan and swear, arms folded being rubbish supporters. If the crowd got behind the players like a small minority do then the Ole's would never of happened... if your coming on hear moaning about the ole's sing in the crowd next time FFS and it wont happen...

Is there a supporter's rule book that I haven't seen yet? Whilst I have TOTAL respect for the Beat, he is entitled to his opinion and I am entitled to mine. This means that if I am frustrated, exasperated and just plain angry with what has happened to my club and I have no other means of expressing this aren't I allowed to make whatever response I want (within the law!) - especially once I've paid my own hard-earned-cash to attend.

Otherwise, are we concluding that the club can do what it wants, for as long as it wants while I and others bankroll it and we must respond only in a manner that they find acceptable.

Each to their own response I say and the sooner this whole sorry episode is behind us (by which I mean Mr Keane's unwelcome sojourn at our club) the better it'll be - at least in MY opinion (which I am still allowed to have, last time I checked...) ;0)

The thing is i imagine that Beattie doesn't have to pay to watch Ipswich.
We do. We were playing the worse i had seen in years, last game i can think that comes close was when we lost 5-1 to west brom, but at least they were a good team.

If Beatitie had been on the radio he'd probaly agreed with one person that it was wrong, then the next person that it was right. Such a yes man, thankg god he hasn't been on radio suffolk the last few matches.

Btw i wasn't cheering Barnsley, i'm just sayin..

TJ is right. Either cheer or sit cross armed saying nothing. Town produced F all to cheer about so lets give some ironic cheers for passing football.

Well said Beat. There were an absolute disgrace. We don't need "fans" like that. I call them fans in a very loose manner.

It seems to me that yet another form of 'political correctness' - has now found it's way to Portman Road.

Let's assess what appears to be the current rules:-

1. No problem at all with putting your hand in your pocket and paying for your season ticket / match day ticket.

2. No boooooooooing of the team allowed.

3. No cheering the opposition.

4. No questioning the Manager's ability.

5. No questioning of tactics.

In other words keep paying to be anything less than entertained, shut up unless you want to say / sing something positive, don't have an opinion unless it's positive - and go home HAPPY - yeah right .....sure will ...... on all fronts.
