Keane: It Had 0-0 Written All Over It
Keane: It Had 0-0 Written All Over It
Saturday, 20th Nov 2010 18:32

Boss Roy Keane felt the game at Hull had 0-0 written all over it until Robert Koren’s second half strike consigned his side to their third successive defeat.

Keane said: “It probably looked like it had 0-0 written all over it and when you go away from home you would accept that, so it’s another difficult one to take.

“I think the effort and all that was fine. I think we could have done with a little bit more composure on the final ball, which is vital to win any game, even in the last 20 minutes when it got a bit hectic.

“We had one or two opportunities in the first half when we were breaking, Jack had one or two half chances, and Jason. That’s where we came up short today.

“I've no problem with the effort or the commitment from the players, that’s fine. But you just need that little bit extra to win football matches, particularly away from home.”

The Blues boss thought Koren’s goal might have struck one of his players its way through and believed his side had a couple of decent penalty claims when Tommy Smith and Connor Wickham appeared to be pulled back: “I think the goal took a deflection and I think there was probably a foul before that.

“I’m certainly not happy with two penalty decisions which we felt ought to have gone our way but we’ve now got to focus on the next game, lick our wounds and look to bounce back.”

Town’s away fans were supportive of the Blues boss despite the loss and the controversy regarding Keane’s criticism of last week’s booing.

The Irishman was unhappy that his side couldn’t give them something to celebrate: “We’re disappointed for them because they’ve travelled up and we know they paid good money and once again we’ve come up short. Disappointed, but we always are when we don't get the right result for the fans.”

Keane confirmed that defender Tom Eastman sustained a groin injury and will be struggling for next week’s game at Norwich, while David Norris was icing his ankle but Keane was hopeful that his skipper will be OK for the trip to Carrow Road.

Tigers boss Nigel Pearson was pleased to get the win: "It was important to get three points. It wasn't an easy game to win with the way in which they set up. We had to work very hard for it and there weren't many chances.

"But it was a good three points and much deserved. It wasn't the most fluent of games, but when we've had three home defeats on the trot there is always going to be a little bit of anxiety around.

"However, I thought we always tried to do the right things and we played some decent football at times, although without being too penetrating.”

This is my first time of writing having read with interest everyone's comments over the past few weeks but cannot hold back no more and have to add my "two penneth" for what it is worth. Listening to RK's press conference was the final straw.

When RK was appointed he came in and said we need "two or three more players" from the team that Jim had. There was an air of excitement (and reservations) about the appointment given what he had done at Sunderland and what he had to say.

18 months on and that excitement has most certainly gone and the reservations increase game by game. When we played Barnsley 8 of the players who played were brought in by RK. He must have had the most money (or nearly most) any Championship manager has had to spend over the past 2 years and where are? he still doesn't know his best team, best formation and he is tactically inept. He calls this progress? We will never score near enough goals to get anywhere near the play offs when we play 4 centre halfs and 4 central midfielders. How can we play 4-3-3 or -4-5-1 when we do not have full backs with pace, creativity or the ability to cross the half way line other than for a corner. I do not blame Tommy Smith or young Tom Eastman, I blame RK. He sets the team up, tactics (is that what they are called) etc. What did he learn playing under Clough, Ferguson and O'Neil.

I really feel sorry for Tamas at the moment as he is the only player who appears to have any confidence and what happens, he scores for his country and is on the bench. He was never given a proper chance last year. We as supporters can see that Scotland up front on his own will never work but what do we know?!

RK's answer appears that to have more players of the same style. Bringing back Jack and having Livermore gives us no balance at all and poor Andros Townsend and what HAS happended to Shane O'Connor? It appears that any player with any pace or attacking ability gives RK a nosebleed!

After the fans slating Keane last week, at his press conference on Thursday RK seems to have twisted it round that it is the fans who were at fault and not himself and given the comments on here yesterday it appeared to have worked. However, having supported our ITFC for over 30 years and listening to the tone he spoke, it was an insult to all fans. What must the players feel like?

The fact is, we won 3 games in August (was this papering over the cracks?), 1 in September, 2 in October and 1 in November. 10 points from 33 is just not good enough and is relegation form. Is that progress?

When I go to PR now there feels like there is a heavy cloud over the ground which suppresses the players, the supporters and that's RK.

We are not stupid and know what our limitations are but I still believe that with a manager who is tactically astute, can form a team and knows how to motivate players that we could get in to the top 6. Unfortunately, RK is not the man to do that and I am really worried about next Sunday.

If ME and Clegg do not act soon our ITFC could be damaged for a long time and the support will dwindle. What will the crowds be at home to Swansea and Leicester when we are on TV?

I feel that RK has never really connected with the supporters and he has lost them, the local media and possibly the dressing room.

Any 3 of Curbishly and Matt Holland, O'Driscoll or Poyet and Tarrico would form a team, win and score goals from the players we have.

Went to the game today with a Hull supporter so sat in the main stand. Didn't hear too much in the way of pro Keane chants, just the one at the start of the match. If anything the Town fans were starting to show their disgust in the final 10 mins.

As for the game, the whole team looked unenthusatic from the word go, with the exception of Colback who at last tried. Why have one striker upfront, especially Scotland who is a talented donkey but cannot run. Even Priskin struggles when on his own up front. At least he looked lively when coming on when the team went 4-4-2 But generally the team looked down and out and were always marinally second best, Hull should have scored when hitting the bar twice.

More worrying was Keane's reaction to going 1-0 down. He just stood in the technical zone like a Zombie doing nothing for a full five minutes, no shouting or arm waving. By comparision Pearson continued to urge his team to the victory, truth was Keane was out of ideas and hopefully soon out of a job.

My Hull mate said he was deeply disappointed with Ipswich and expected better, expecially as Hull weren't up to much either. He should thank his lucky stars he wasn't at PR last Saturday. Keane Out!

This game didn't have 0-0 written all over it. In the end we were lucky to only lose by 1-0. Kilbane's header hit the post twice and they sent in so many crosses from the left and right that it was unreal. I listened to this on the radio and it was a shambles. All I kept hearing was "Its Dawson, and its another cross...it's Kilbane, and its another cross.." Smith and Eastman kept getting beaten because they are centre-backs being played out of position.
Would love to have counted the amount of crosses Hull actually had. Delaney and O'Dea sounded under constant bombardment at times.
It was a depressing game to listen to, and must have been worse to actually watch (did we really create a meaningful chance all game?).
Negative football with one up front and pump it long to them (whether it be Scotland or Priskin)
Keane, please sign an emergency right-back and get an assistant (Eastmans injured now anyway- we need cover...)

PSGBlue- They made the same comment about Keane on Radio Suffolk. After the goal he just stood there in disbelief without saying a word until the last three minutes of the game. He had obviously run out of ideas. Assistant anyone?
I have yet to say Keane out-but I am now not far...

“We're disappointed for them because they've travelled up and we know they paid good money and once again we've come up short. Disappointed, but we always are when we don't get the right result for the fans.” Well done Roy keane for finally acknowledging the fans effort towards 'your' club (it seems nowadays) and your team. Again though somehow you get the team wrong. What has andros said in the changing room that has upset you?

The most dissapointing fact is how poor football we are now playing. I grew up under the Robson era and was very lucky to witness Muhren, Thijsen, Brazil , Mariner, wark etc and i am not living in cuckoo land and realise that as a club we were playing way above our status then, but the crap I watched last week was such a void away from those great days it was ridiculous. I refuse to pay to watch now and only visit PR when I get a free ticket, but this does not make me a less supporter, I love Ipswich Town, but whereas I have been an advocat for giving Roy Keane a good chance, think it is now time to quit, however he will not and ME will not sack him so I am afraid it is just a case of hoping we can stay up! RK knows he will go at the end of the season and this will rub off on the players so it looks like being a very difficult 2nd half to the season. Very sad days indeedT

Oh and just one more point, why is it us supporters all seem to see the same faults within the team, but we know nothing, yet the well paid professionals keep making the same mistakes every week?

Why oh why are people on here asking for an assistant for Keane, do you think he would listen to him??
Keane is unable to motivate his squad, nobody looks like they want to play for him, it is time for a change, I'm sure that they will not wish to compensate Keane to go now therefore we are stuck with him for the duration. I just wish the man would have the balls to admit he ain't up to the job and walk out, like he's walked out on so many people before.
Mr Evans PLEASE save our beloved club and get rid of Keane!!

devontractorboy- you are right.keane does not need an assistant- it only causes complications with tactics.
This game had 0-0 written all over it. We played for the draw but a moment of luck from Koren decided it. We should have had 2 penalties and the referees decisions on those incidents proved crucial. Murphy hardly had a save to make throughout the game and our defence was solid. Disappointed with the lack of support from the fans in the stadium when their goal went in. We should be supporting the team and the manager more! We now have to go to Norwich and make sure that we get the 0-0,or maybe even sneak a 1-0.its going to be tough but our players are up for it and Norwich will be surprised by our long ball strategy. Its vital that we play 1 up front as their midfield is strong. Scotland to be replaced by Priskin at about 60 mins. Shame that we haven't got McAuley or Eastman at the back. Peters will probably replace Eastman. Then lets get a 1-0 at home to WBA. We have some of the best players in this league so lets get back up the table!

When we appointed Keane, I was one of the few people who wasn't riding the wave of optimism that most other Town fans were on. I had a bad feeling then that we'd appointed the wrong man for the club. I didn't want to be proved right, but he has shown an amazing lack of tactical nous, and has got us playing a boring, negative, long-ball style. Also, the way he has criticized the fans is out of order. We pay good money to follow the Town, and if we don't like the way he's got us playing, we have a right to criticize his tactics. The least we expect is decent, attractive football.
Keane: do us a favour and get lost before you damage our great club even more.

BrettenhamBlue added 05:03 - Nov 21
Blue_floyd- everybody knows that more goals are scored by using long ball tactics than by using any other tactics. There are many different forms of long ball football. Keane has brought in players who are adept at using this tactic and players who are not suited (Garvan etc) have been removed. Examples of such tactics have been used on another post- Straight long ball beating central defenders, straight long ball front of central defenders, cross long ball to inside right, cross long ball to inside left, cross long ball to left wing, cross long ball to right wing. There are also variations of all above which can be done by cutting the ball on the left or right. Our coaches are making sure that all of our players are schooled in all these tactics,so it is a philosophy which will improve our squad. I believe we are entering a new stage of the evolution of Ipswich Town Football Club.
Ozzyitfc- Townsend is being used once the defences of the opposition have been softened up. Long ball tactics wear out the legs of the defence of the opposition, and it is a war of attrition. We then let loose Townsend on these worn out defenders.
tractorgirls- you look great, please support our man!
Legend- Hull were a Premiership club last season.
Dirtydingusmagee- we came close to our aim (the 0-0 was within reach but a lucky deflection gave them the win).
Blue_Fred- Keane has brought in an entire squad who live by long ball football. If we play a different way we will lose (players like Norris and Leadbitter are ball winners- not dribbling masters)
Choprawon'tcome- that was not Keanes fault.
I felt I was the only one today singing out from the stands in support of Keane from the very beginning of the match against Hull. I sang as loudly as I could “We love you Keano, we do”. If Keane fails, Ipswich Town fails (Keane will not leave for the next 7 months regardless of results). If we don't support him, players will lose their morale and play poorly, the atmosphere in PR will get worse (if it could get any worse) and we might even face the humiliation of relegation. This league is close. The difference between success and failure might only prove to be 10/15 points.

Lost 3 in a row, only scored 1 goal in them 3 games, lost 6 of our last 8 league games, but Keane & Clegg reckon we're moving in the reight direction!! Keane has no idea, Clegg is completely out of touch, we are a club in turmoil, but nobody in charge seems to realise it!! KEANE OUT, CLEGG OUT!

RKeaneisaGod - If your intention was to defend Keane and make a case for his legitimate retention as the manager of our club, your posts above have proven to be among the greatest own goals the world of football has ever seen.

For everyone else - Scotland up front on his own again & Priskin on the bench can only be explained when looking at the infallible character of Keane. He obviously hoped for a result which would show us disrespectful supporters that he knows best and even though the substitution of Tamas last week was clearly a mistake to all, he could justify it retrospectively.

'It had 0-0 written all over it' - Slight problem - they won 1-0. Not good enough I'm afraid. We don't look like scoring and we conceed goals. Receipe for disaster.

It's now getting to the stage where Evans has to make a decision. Yes we are 3 points off the play-offs, but we don't look like threatening the top 6. TWO strikers needed and a right back. Evans either needs to back his manager with funds OR look elsewhere for a manager.

Why are there comments on here advocating a nil-nil draw as an acceptable result!? We've just lost 2 home games on the spin to very mediocre opposition and then take on a below average Hull side who struggle to find the net and we play negative, dull football in order to what? Stifle a p**s poor attack!!?

Get real. So what Hull were Prem last season, it means nothing. They are a shambles this season. I backed Keane for ages and thought he had all his pieces in place at the start of the this season but over the last 8 weeks he's lost the plot and our football is atrocious.

Evans, sort it out NOW otherwise we should start footing with out feet and abandoning games until this is sorted.

I was at the KC Stadium yesterday - the game was there for the taking....Hull were no better than us to be honest but with 2 up front posed more of a goal threat. We brought Conor Wickham on and played with 2 strikers only when we went 1-0 down and were chasing the game with about 12 mins to go - this shows a complete lack of ambition in my opinion...a possible 3 pts became an actual 0 points.

I have been to the last two away games and we were chalk and cheese. At Sheffield we played 2 up front (including Priskin), played some good stuff and won easily. Sadly at Hull we reverted to type and Jason Scotland was totally isolated up top on his own.

Also, how can a team play 5 in midfield and still have no width? I have been one of those that were "on the fence" about our high profile manager but I am starting to climb off it now. I really think we have some talent but no one to get the most out of it

Best song I have heard for ages yesterday was when the Hull fans sung "How sh*t must you be, you're losing to us". Made me laugh despite the football match that spoiled a good day out. I would LOVE to be able to sing that at Norwich next Sunday
