Keane: I'm Not Walking Away
Keane: I'm Not Walking Away
Thursday, 16th Dec 2010 11:25

Blues boss Roy Keane says he hasn’t thought about walking away from Portman Road despite the current poor run of form which has seen his side drop to 18th in the Championship. The Town manager spent some a few days in Manchester earlier this week reflecting on the Blues’ woes.

With no sign of the beard which was noted in the wake of the Preston game on Saturday, Keane said he hadn't considered leaving Portman Road during a couple of days back in the North-West: “I’ve not thought about packing it in.

"Sometimes I think you need to step back, we all do that and I’ve done it before. You step back, recharge your batteries and look at something from a different angle.

“People think it’s about being on the training pitch, but sometimes not about being on the training pitch. You’ve got to step back from it.

“I had a couple of days with one or two good friends from outside football in Manchester, even away from my family. I think they enjoyed the break from me, it works both ways.”

Keane, who says it's irrelevant whether he has spoken to owner Marcus Evans in recent days, considers himself lucky to be at a patient club like Ipswich, with other managers having been sacked more quickly elsewhere, but admits that eventually that patience will run out: “You can’t keep losing football matches.”

I've been a town fan all my life and still keep in touch daily with the blues fortunes........ my question to all those Keane haters out there - just who do you suggest would do a better job in the current climate? Who - with the right pedigree is available, that is such a person was prepared to take on the town? Granted results are not going our way at the moment, but the paradox is we are one step away from a carling cup final!....can't be that bad!?!?!

in answer to newsouthwalesblue

Anyone who decides on a tactic, sticks to it, and trains his players to play that tactic. Also someone who doesn't keep dropping our best performers on a regular basis.

That would be a good fundamental start.

I cannot think of anyone who would do a worse job, give me Curbishly, someone with some football knowledge, who treats others with some dignity and would respect what the club stands for, not this arrogant waster living on his reputation as a player, when he was known as a thug.

Maybe Mr Keane was "encouraged" to take a few days off by ME and calamity clegg!..Maybe they have been tapping someone up and needed to show them around Portman Road with out Keane bumping into them...lets face it..they were in discussions with Keane when Magilton was still in the job....Martin O'Neil likes the country life and Im sure his wages are about what Keane is on anyway...Allardyce is unsuitable in my book....Curbs i think has been out of the game too long now...Ray Wilkins would be a good appointment as assistant/ first team coach...i think Roys problems are the "coaches" hes surrounded by they seem to be making the decisions for him or at least having too much influence over first team affairs and tactics..Roy played in some of the finest attacking free flowing football teams in the english leagues in Forest and man U and played under 2 of the greatest tactical managers the game has ever seen....so i just dont get how he can be so bad!!!!!

I agree with moomoo & others this is getting to a point now where I fed up of moaning about Keane, we all know he's bloody useless, & the end of the day it doesn't matter how much passion the fans show, if ME decides to keep Keane til the end of the season (even if that means relegation) theres jack all we can do about it.

To answer newsouthwalesblue, to be honest mate the football at PR is so awful I'd be happy to see "Shane Warne" in charge!!! anyone to be honest, Mickey mouse, Elvis...... We've lost 9 in 11 league games, how is that not bad?!?! Ok, yes we're in a League Cup Semi-final, but lets remember even West Brom made 8 or 9 changes in the last round, promotion has always got to be the most important aim.

newsouthwales I agree to a certain extent in that the names that people suggest on here through their blue tinted glasses are laughable. The reality is we're an 18th placed Championship club playing infront of a half full stadium with little financial backing moving forward. That said we have excellent facilities and a good reputation and history. The likes of O'Neill wouldn't consider us for a second of course they wouldn't. That said, a whole host of managers would, and many are far more tactically and mentally equipped than Keane.

O'driscoll, Poyet, curbishley, phil brown, ronnie moore etc etc

While any of the above would do, personally I would like someone vastly experienced even if at the lower levels. Ronnie Moore I would be delighted with, as i would Curbishley.

i hope you had a cuppa with Fergie and picked up some pointers on how to run a football club, or at least find out how to get more ref decisions to go our way and add more time to the match.

And who would that be blueconscience? Nice to see a couple of sensible statements on here from hoolywoodginge and newsouthwalesblue rather than the usual childish rants. And as for Martin O'Neil coming here - can't see that happening - the guy is far too ambitous for ITFC. Get real guys we are an average club in an average league with a very average manager. If Keane goes best we could hope for would Curbs.

newsouthwalesblue - you have a valid point, who would do a good job here?

Curbs, Allardyce, Hughton O'neill have all been mentioned.

O'Neill would not lower himself to this level, nor would Allardyce. I do not beleive the latter would be a welcome here anyway, Joe Royle got criticised for his long ball tactics, so Allardyce would not last half a season.

Chris Hughton has done remarkably well at Newcastle but the parallels with what he achieved and what RK achieved at Sunderland are uncanny. So no guarantee that he could do a job here.

Curbishley, would get the team playing as a more cohesive unit and instill some confidence in the side. I think the younger players would lokk up to him and respect him, but again with him I believe it will take time. Is that something he will be allowed to have from the fans and board?

Perhaps we need to take a leaf out of Norwich's book and go for a younger manager successful in the lower levels, e.g. Poyet and Tarrico, they have got Brighton playing some great football and winning lots of plaudits, and with Taricco's association with the club in past, surely it would be easier to attract them up rather than persuade someone to drop down.

You are absolutely right, there is no-one out there with a magic wand who will come in and turn things around overnight. I think ME knows that and that is why RK is still here. Although one thing I am certain of is that RK is not up to it. His body language and comments to me are shouting out that he has had enough. He won't walk but he is expecting the push. He is probably spending as much time with his lawyers to get the best contract settlement sorted than he is with the players.

Who mentioned Allardyce as a good manager and replacement????? Just goes to show the mentality of some on here...

I remember a few weeks back we were doing well, I appreciate the football isn't too attractive. We'll turn a corner and get a win on Saturday.

If Marcus Evans, Simon Clegg and Roy Keane can't see that there is a problem at ITFC and that they have a responsibilty to take action, I suggest that fans also take a step back. Stay away, until we get a real football manger.

If you don't beat Leicester at Portman road you should p*ss off because we always beat them. Or maybe there are no certainties. ARE YOU GOING TO MAKE IT 7 LEAGUE GAMES WITHOUT A WIN??

LMAO theres still people out there defending him!!

I wonder what the ratio of inners to outers is?

1/10 and thats probably being kind!

The club is on an economy drive - we ain't going to sack RK and pay compensation. We won't get relegated; we might miss out on the play-offs; RK will see out his contract and we will appoint a new manager in May. End of story....change the subject.

Sadly I think we may get taught a footballing lesson by Sven's leicester on sky this weekend..that would be 7 defeats in a row..surely Keane would have the dignity to let someone capable take the job if that happens?!

Can't believe the guy hasn't had the dignity to walk already - he's been a total disaster and a complete waste of 20 months.

For all of you who claim that certain managers would not come here.

Try this. If it had been announced 18 months ago that we were sacking JM. Would any of you have put RK name forward. No you would not, and do not try to tell otherwise. This idle speculation is as tiring as complaining about RK. Rule no-one out.

Surely one thing we can all agree on is that under RK's tenure things have not gone as we would have hoped. Even when we were winning games, was the football really that good. Regardless of recent individual performances, of injury. There has been no consistancy, no fluidity, no cohesion.

We find ourselves towards the bottom of the league for many reasons but the basics are we are losing games, and we are not winning games. The reasons for this are many, but there are two peoples who can sort this, players and managers. Now for some reason things are not working, and a solution has to be found, and that solution will come from RK, the players or ME.

Sunderland fans were not happy with his style of football, aswell as his poor signing and poor tatics. It is exactly the same here at Ipswich, and while i like the fact that he is here and still trying his best, if he left not many people would be dissapointed.

Ipswich have been patient with him and future managers will not be put off by our owner, unlike the majority of clubs now days. But it is not the Ipswich way to sack our managers but the style of football he plays is not the Ipswich way. So please no more Kenae.

Keane can't walk away as he would forever be labelled a quitter. He quit Sunderland when he had led them into the bottom 3 of the Premier League so chances are he won't quit here.

He will walk when his contract is up after leading us into League 1. Managing in League 1 will not look good on his CV so he will definitely be off !!!

we may avoid relegation but it will be a close run thing if our form does not improve, I agree that is unlikely he will be sacked and he will not walk beacuse it will harm his future job prospects, all in all more of the same, much more of the same to look forward to, we will win a few, lose most and in our own crap, dour, dismal style, gates of 12-15 K during the depths of winter, Oh come all ye faithful.

i've heard female fans saying that RK is a typical bloke, mainly becauses he promises the world, gets you all excited then fails to deliver, wish ME would give us all a nice xmas prezzie by gettin rid of RK and bringing us a manager who can actually do the job without wasting millions!!!!!! COYB!!!!!!!!!!!!11

In the real world, if you are sacked from a job, it's very hard to get another one. Anywhere! However, in the football management world, it's going to be harder for him to get a job if he walks away from this one ... as he will have a reputation as a quitter ... but didn't Kevin Keegan also have that reputation? Didn't stop him getting other jobs ... probably worth taking the chance, Roy ... someone will employ you!! And we'll all be happy, it's a win win really ... just go now!!

I still feel that if Keane has been set a target (ie Play off's) then until i is impossible for us to achive he should be allowed to carry on.

Not sure if Keane is the man to do this
