Fülöp: Packed Portman Road Gave Us a Huge Boost
Fülöp: Packed Portman Road Gave Us a Huge Boost
Thursday, 13th Jan 2011 16:04

Keeper Márton Fülöp says a packed Portman Road gave the Blues a huge boost during last night’s 1-0 Carling Cup semi-final first leg victory over Arsenal. The Hungarian glovesman vowed to continue his fine record against the Gunners when Town travel to the Emirates for the second leg on Tuesday 25th January.

Fülöp said: "The fans were unbelievable and gave the players a great boost by getting right behind the team.

"That was just what we needed and it was a great result for us. A draw would have been good but to win is sensational.

"Having 30,000 in the ground is what we want. I came here to help the team get in the Premier League because that is where you want to be. We want to have games like that every week.

"Last night the opposition was Premier League, the fans were Premier League, the media stuff was Premier League. That is what we have to aim for."

The 27-year-old says Town can withstand the onslaught which is likely to face them at the Emirates in the second leg as he always does well against the Gunners: “I’ve played Arsenal four times now and kept three clean sheets.

"I feel I have a hold over them — different to Chelsea where I have conceded seven goals in my last two games against them.

“Another clean sheet and we will be at Wembley. And I can do it. Our fans were unbelievable last night and they deserve to reach a big final.”

Listen all you stay-away fans - GET YOUR BUMS DOWN TO PORTMAN ROAD!!!! Don't just turn up for the 'big' games. If you can afford it, get down there because it made a real difference last night. It gets a bit lonely being a season ticket holder with all those empty seats at times ....

Beating Arsenal 1-0 it feels like 1978 all over again... ok wrong competition, but you know what I mean. A feeling we have not had in such a long time.

Hold your horses Fulop! The fact you can't produce that in front of 20,000 against Barnsley is the reason why you wont ever get 30,000 again this season. Proud of every single one of them but believe me one game isn't going to heal the 5 years of hurt we have had.

Get 3 points at Millwall is an absolute must.

I hope this isnt going to be a case of the players saving themselves in the next two vital games in order for the "BIG" televised one. Priorities!!

Well done though.

At least Fulop is confident, this can only benefit the defense and the rest of the team. This is exactly what we need to be hearing from the players!
Confidence breeds more confidence, and a confident team is a winning team!

Fantastic performance from the players and supporters last night....Great result!
Now then: we are not going down or up this season - probably finish about 10th.
So, Tuesday 25th Jan is our biggest game...the 9,000 strong support need to do their bit: everyone wear something blue, take scarves, flags, balloons and ticker tape. Make as much noise as we can for 90 mins and help our troops get to Wembley!!!!! COYB COYB COYB............

Great shift Fulop. Have total faith in you, solid keeper and key player for us. Take a bow. Spot on with coming over to SBRS after game and clapping/cheering. Nice to see that level of passion.

Not_so_Keane - Dont need that old finger pointing attitude, was unlucky @ Barnsley. "Clean slate for everybody" - Messir Paul Jewell

It's stating the obvious, but there were four reasons for a big crowd yesterday: it was against Arsenal, it was a semi-final, ticket prices were reduced and there were loads of away fans there. Our attendance for standard league matches was under 17,000 in recent games. Jewell's appointment will give it a little lift I think, as if attractive football returns it could be a big lift.

How about this for an idea: write to every non-season ticket holder on the database offering them a vastly discounted mini season ticket for the rest of the season, and give them the opportunity to renew it for early bird prices for next season. Get the people who have given up due to high prices and dire football to get back into the habit of supporting Ipswich once again. We need these fans back, but the high match day prices at the moment are a big barrier.

Just read the quotes from Fabregas....

"I don't know if it is long ball or a rugby kick but it worked for them,"

"It was disappointing to lose because I think we were the much better team. Arsenal made the football, the other team refused to play football, they were lucky to score with a long ball,"

I mean what ridiculous things to say...ofc they are a better team sherlock....but too suggest they played better on the night. We closed down quicker, won all the 50/50, defended better, showed more passion and desire....all qualities that result in a "team playing well"

Re. "Now we will see how they cope at the Emirates against us."

Id love it so so much now if we knock them out.

Re. "the other team refused to play football" We have a name Cesc....Its Ipswich...

Sorry...I know this is off topic but reading the crap he has said has realy wound me up.....why cant he show some respect and acknowledge they got beat by the better team on the night....Lets give him sh1t on the 25th....9000 should be able to let him know what we think

Fullop you looked the prem keeper on the night! kicks went astray but clearly you were trying to pick out Wickham on the wing rather than hoofing down the centre! well done!

Anyone fancy a laugh at the responses to Fabregas' rant? (started by a gooner too!)

Head over to the Beeb and join in the fun! Some decent comments from Gunners fans about the game and our play too. Lap it up Ladies & Gents.

Yes the Squad felt the big time at Portman Road as Fulop mentions
"Last night the opposition was Premier League, the fans were Premier League, the media stuff was Premier League. That is what we have to aim for."

Lets hope McAuley can be persuaded that this Club can give him the big time!!
