Luton Left-Sider Linked Monday, 4th Apr 2011 15:33
Town, Charlton and Peterborough are reported to be weighing up whether to make a summer move for Luton left winger or left-back Jake Howells. The Blues will certainly have been represented at Kenilworth Road this season with Andy Drury signing from the Blue Square Bet Premier side in January for £150,000.
After a spell as a youngster at Watford, Howells progressed through the ranks at Luton and is contracted to the Hatters until the summer of 2012.
The 19-year-old has made 77 starts and 39 sub appearances, scoring eight goals, since making his first team bow in May 2008. He has also made four England C (non-league national side) appearances, scoring one goal.

Well Andy Drury has worked out to be a half decent signing on the cheap, so why not give this youngster a punt? - Won't be breaking the bank and we could possibly be getting a gem.

We do need a left back, but I've always got the impression that Jewell prefers players with experience to those with potential?

@Blu92 I think PJ just mentioned that he is looking to try out more youngsters: "Town manager Paul Jewell says more youngsters could join Josh Carson and Connor Wickham in the first team before the end of the season. The Blues boss says there are one or two others pushing for a place behind the teenage duo. bluekraut

Got to say, I'm not sure what to make of this one, although as pointed out, Andy Drury seems to have done well so far [ must admit, I think he will go further ].

I think drury was a great little signing but if in honest I can't see another luton player coming in contributing to a play off push next year. I'm definitely not just saying this because he is a non league player before someone gets the hump.

If he's got the potential then great.

young and versitile by the sound of it, would be cheap so little to loose.... i think the mix of young and up and coming as well as experienced players will be good moving forward.... Kennedy is a solid left back, a player could learn a lot from him BUt he does get injured and we have insufficient cover in this position.

Garv - Why did you say it then??

A couple of points: To achieve 116 appearances in the 1st team is great experience for any 19 year old (this should be brought to the attention of our kids who decline to go on loan to the lower leagues). He appears to have been everpresent for three seasons. this could put him way ahead of many of our youths. I think I am right in stating that Drury was only at Luton for 6 months (Previously with Stevenage).

to write a player off because he's at Luton is foolish. He's 19 and could be a good talent. There are fine lines in football and the fact he's in the conference doesn't mean he can't/wont play higher. Jimmy Bullard was playing for Gravesend until he was 25.

Clive, maybe do some better research before posting on here. JB was moving to Wigan at 25 after some very successful years at Peterbro'.

Perfect vision, IQ over 115, hard worker, well balanced, naturally good humoured? Good lord

@bluekraut - good point! I just think that left-back might be seen as too much of a core role in the team for a 19/20 year old to fill week in, week out

Is he better than Shane O'Connor? If yes, happy days! If no, not much point in us chasing him...

I'm from Luton, seen this guy play a few times, he's a solid full back, though really just lacks experience at top flight. I think a season or two at championship level and he could be really quite good.

Don't know enough about this guy. Although Drury isn't a bad player, I still think he needs a lot more time adapt to this level of football and I do wonder if he is any better than what we already have. Would prefer to be going for players with a lot more league experience, preferably at Championship level - particularly if we want to be challengers next season. That said, may be good back up to Kennedy next year - but wouldn't O'Conner be a better option? He can play both roles and has experience at this level.

Presumably Drury knows a lot about the lad and has given PJ the nod. Yes it is a big step, but please don't knock it until you have seen him play. Judge him on performances not the position of his current team. At least he will be relatively cheap.

Sounds like a good move although i do wonder why there isn't any other teams in the championship after him, but we also have o connor who looks like a promosing player

Who? One for the future then, COYB!

If he's good then sign him up what have we got to lose, he isn't that expensive plus I like the thought of a chaep player doing well at the club because it means we dont have to fork out loads of money to get promoted.
