Town Linked With Move for Watford's Graham
Town Linked With Move for Watford's Graham
Tuesday, 17th May 2011 09:54

Town are set to make a £2 million offer for Watford frontman Danny Graham, according to one of this morning’s tabloids. Graham netted 27 goals in all competitions this season, including two against the Blues in a hugely impressive performance as the Hornets won 3-0 at Portman Road in March.

The 25-year-old has previously been linked with Newcastle United and QPR with a number of Premier League scouts watching him in action in the game against Town and throughout the season.

Gateshead-born Graham started his career with non-league Chester-Le-Street Town before moving on to Middlesbrough in 2003. During his time at the Riverside Graham spent spells on loan at Darlington, Derby, Leeds, Blackpool and Carlisle.

Seven goals in 11 games in the second half of the 2006/07 season led to a permanent switch to the Cumbrians that summer, the 6ft 1in tall striker signing a two-year deal.

In July 2009 at the end of that contract Graham joined Watford for a tribunal set fee of £200,000 rising to £550,000 after various clauses were met. Carlisle are also entitled to 15% of an profit made if the Hornets sell Graham, who scored 33 goals in 91 starts and 11 sub appearances during his time as a permanent member of staff at Brunton Park.

Graham signed an initial two-year deal at Vicarage Road, a contract he subsequently extended to the summer of 2012 with a further option for another season.

The one-time England U20 cap’s form this season in particular has caught the eye — he was named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year - and overall for Watford he has scored 41 goals in 87 full appearances and 11 games from the bench.

Tweeting about reported interest in him last week, Graham said nothing had happened so far: “There is stuff in the press about moves, don’t believe it until I tell you all. I am under contract.”

Town manager Paul Jewell is very much in the market for a striker, having had an offer of £2.3 million for Doncaster’s Billy Sharp rejected last week, however, the Blues are likely to be outsiders for Graham's signature if Premier League clubs firm up their interest.

read this on another site
Just had a text from a friend who is a taxi driver and has sometimes worked for Ipswich Town. The text read, "Just taken Clegg + a short Northerner to PR. Is this a new signing? xx"

Could this be Billy Sharp?
or danny graham but at 6 foot not really a short northerner

I really rate Danny Graham, he could be the answer to our striking problems!!!! however i reckon a team like Qpr, Norwich or a lower premiership league team will sign him up. Keep the faith COYB.

Would be a cracking signing! Garunteed 15+ goals, Wickham has to be looking at 15+ plus too.. Just what we need!

Would be a great signing but I fear he will cost 3m rather than the 2m

They can have Scotland or Priskin to make up for the loss.

Would be a great signing, but that's IF, and a huge IF we managed to sign him.

Can never see them accepting that.

Billy Sharp would very much fit the short northerner description.

The fact that we are being linked with some of the better strikers in the Championship makes me feel optimistic about next season but also quite foolish as I (probably like many others) haven't renewed my season ticket. Danny Graham, Billy Sharp and James Coppinger can certainly do a job at this level and with the right support from a quality selected XI from our existing squad we can certainly make the push and keep knocking on the door of the top six come end of next season.

Okay, its only speculation at the moment but it is very satisfying to know that money is available for PJ to bring in quality players like this.. shame I wont be in the Upper Sir Bobby to see it as regularly as I'd like... :-(

Don't see Watford accepting that (if true) especially if a number of PL teams being linked with 4 million pound moves, if we end up with Graham I will be very surprised.

Looks like that's our budget for a new striker then. Can't we just post an ad - '25 goal a season striker wanted, will be pay up to 2 - 2.5 million'.

He won't join another Championship club. End of.

unlikey, but much better than Sharpe, but stll not as good as Maynard.

If we have to spend big bucks then Maynard is the granny kicking type required.

i think i would prefer sharp as he is more of a 1 in 2 man imo, but i might be wrong. i have seen more of sharp than graham. TBF i would be very happy with either.

£2M?..we'll be lucky.

If Priskin goes the other way then it'll be smiles all round.

Again very happy with the calibre of this player however not getting the hopes up, if Newcastle are in for him, being gateshead born i think its a no brainer, someone posted this on a rumor page last week that jewell had been given permission to speak to him, he got laughed at, perhaps there is something in this.

Paul Jewell has been out of the game soo long he's evidently unaware of the value of good players these days
