Town Linked With Move for Watford's Graham
Town Linked With Move for Watford's Graham
Tuesday, 17th May 2011 09:54

Town are set to make a £2 million offer for Watford frontman Danny Graham, according to one of this morning’s tabloids. Graham netted 27 goals in all competitions this season, including two against the Blues in a hugely impressive performance as the Hornets won 3-0 at Portman Road in March.

The 25-year-old has previously been linked with Newcastle United and QPR with a number of Premier League scouts watching him in action in the game against Town and throughout the season.

Gateshead-born Graham started his career with non-league Chester-Le-Street Town before moving on to Middlesbrough in 2003. During his time at the Riverside Graham spent spells on loan at Darlington, Derby, Leeds, Blackpool and Carlisle.

Seven goals in 11 games in the second half of the 2006/07 season led to a permanent switch to the Cumbrians that summer, the 6ft 1in tall striker signing a two-year deal.

In July 2009 at the end of that contract Graham joined Watford for a tribunal set fee of £200,000 rising to £550,000 after various clauses were met. Carlisle are also entitled to 15% of an profit made if the Hornets sell Graham, who scored 33 goals in 91 starts and 11 sub appearances during his time as a permanent member of staff at Brunton Park.

Graham signed an initial two-year deal at Vicarage Road, a contract he subsequently extended to the summer of 2012 with a further option for another season.

The one-time England U20 cap’s form this season in particular has caught the eye — he was named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year - and overall for Watford he has scored 41 goals in 87 full appearances and 11 games from the bench.

Tweeting about reported interest in him last week, Graham said nothing had happened so far: “There is stuff in the press about moves, don’t believe it until I tell you all. I am under contract.”

Town manager Paul Jewell is very much in the market for a striker, having had an offer of £2.3 million for Doncaster’s Billy Sharp rejected last week, however, the Blues are likely to be outsiders for Graham's signature if Premier League clubs firm up their interest.

Costadelblue - i don't think there's anyone on here believes you. However saying that, i did just see Giovanni Dos Santos shaking hands with Clegg in a restaurant...

All very encouraging, normally we have to wait months before we start making moves in the transfer market. Sounds like Jewell is cracking on with it. Top stuff!

Ipswich Town have offered Watford a 3.7 million pound bid for striker Danny Graham. The club probably going to accept to help build more of a SQUAD for next year

Just more links I fear. I can't see Watford accepting £2M and I suspect better clubs will be linked. We only finished a point above Watford, so doubt Graham will see it as a step up. But like one poster said, we can dream!

Just bumped into Malky Mackay in Liverpool Street station carrying a suitcase full of 20 pound notes and dragging Tamas Priskin on a lead behind him. Danny Graham is definitely coming to Portman Road...you heard it here first!

£2M, blimey! we will never get him for that money! After his season, the hornets will be wanting £3-4M at least, sign Graham for £3, Sharp for £3, Coppinger for £500K, and Crystal Palace's McCartney for £1M, we have the funds, so lets get the players!!

i agree with most people £2m for a player of that calibre, and their best player too,bit of a lame bid i think.imagine if some team came in with a bid of £2m for wickham,i know what we would say! no up the bid and get billy sharp instead!

Lets save £2-3 million pound sign some one from the lower leagues. (remeber where Walters from). Clayton Donaldson and Ryan Lowe are the highest goal scorers in league 2 and Clayton is available on a free tranfer. Surely worth a gamble even if only as a squad player.

Sadler, we dont have the funds now shutup! But on another note, manvers from bacton utd would be a great signing.

Those of you ranting about "how low the offer is", "embarrassing", "pull your finger out", etc. are aware that this is a speculative piece in a tabloid newspaper, aren't you?

There's nothing which says Town actually have made an offer, let alone any confirmation from either club as to what sum would have been bid. Pure journalistic speculation, I'd suggest: We've made an offer of just over £2m for one Championship striker. Ipswich in the market for a goalscorer. Who else is there? Ah - Graham, at Watford. And how much? Oh, about the same. Who else should we link him with? The usual selection of lower Prem/upper Champ sides - don't forget to always include QPR. Bingo - article filed for publication! Column inches filled!

costadelblue, you got that from www.football-rumours.co.uk may i suggest the emphasis is on rumour. Not having a go, just think we need to keep a sense of reality until anything is announced about anyone.

VERY much doubt we'd offer 3.7 million for a player whos only scored 86 goals in 263 appearances! None in prem! You's who are talking big money for this guy is bonkers! 2 mil is a great offer. 1 Season wonder im thinking! BILLY SHARP IS THE MAN U BELLS

Have you noticed that trying to tempt potential premiership players is not very successful?
We don't actually have much to offer as a team. In fact we don't HAVE a team.
If you can't inspire players of proven quality to risk their professional life in joining our team, (and that's fair) then clearly the more difficult route needs to be taken. Keane couldn't have done it. Young Jewell might....We need to add raw talent and get it working a successful system. Our benighted neighbours were so successful in this, even with tipsy chairwoman.
It might take a bit of time, but the experience will be GOOD.

Lay - Agree.

IF we had offered that kind of money they would've bitten our hand off by now!

I'm not doubting we've made a bid, and if we have then it's good to be putting in offers for decent champ players this early and not on panic buys or loans on the last day of the transfer window, but we are going to be linked with just about every striker that has scored over 15 goals last season and most rumours or reports will have silly prices with them as ME seems to be willing to give PJ cash to spend!

I have to admit it is nice to get linked to these players! But wen i think of graham i dont think he'll bring that much to us! If we sign this guy we wil either be selling wickham or playing 1 upfront! Or wickham in midfield! Which would be a massive waste of his talent! Wickham and graham upfront wouldnt work! If we offloaded wickham and bought in sharp and graham, and then signed some other quality players! Then we'd be talking a promotion push!

Would be a fantastic signing for us but can't see it. Better off going for Sharp and Tyson.
