Dyer Linked With Mowbray's Boro Sunday, 5th Jun 2011 11:34
Former Blue Kieron Dyer has been linked with Middlesbrough, where his one-time Town team-mate Tony Mowbray is manager. The 32-year-old has been released by West Ham with Blues boss Paul Jewell having said he could be interested in signing the former England man permanently this summer after taking him on loan for a month late in the season.
Reports in the North-East claim Dyer’s representatives have held preliminary talks with Boro to gauge their interest in the former England man.
Even if Mowbray is keen on taking Dyer back to the North-East, where he previously played for Newcastle, the Teessiders might not be willing to risk too much of their budget on someone with such a track record of injury problems. Boro are looking to significantly reduce their wage bill, although a pay-as-you-play type deal has previously been mooted in relation to Dyer's possible return to Town.
Premier League Everton have also been mentioned in connection with a move for the midfielder, while there have been rumours of interest from clubs in the Middle East and Dyer has suggested the possibility of a move to the United States.

On his day a great player, but not worth the risk.

A player who has his roots in the Eastern area is very unlikely to move up there again is he ?

As I posted previously, I think his best days are behind him. Any thought of him going to America to play, to me smacks of a last big wage packet [ like he needs it ]. We need players who want to play for the badge not the wagepacket.

At last some good news! Nothing against Kieron as he WAS a great player for us - but his recent record is very poor. He is too big a risk for us - injury prone and did virtually nothing during his recent loan spell - mainly due to injury. Time to let go and look forward.

Just saying guys (not a comment aimed at everyone just a general observation) If a player is 50/50 about joining us or someone else and heres comments so negative about a former legend of the club who is an England international just dropped out of the premierleague for the 1st time in a decade and hasnt done anything wrong yet... how is this helpful? The potential player will just see how much negativity and expectation there is at the club and sod off somewhere else. We need to get realisitic as a fan base and stop being so negative at every rumour of a news story which might or probably wont even happen

Its not negative to say an injury prone player is injury prone, its factual! Wherever Dyer goes, with his injury record, it would be a foolish club that did not include some element of 'pay as you play' in the contract.

I would not mind Dyer coming back, yes it's a gamble but that's what a gamble is! If we can get him fit he would light up the town again.

Big_Foot_Blue - no-one is debating that Kieron WAS an excellent player for us. Like many I am concerned with his injury record and the fact that he has barely played for four years is a real worry. He struggled during his loan. As Regency points out this is all factual. Not negative, but a realistic comment about a player who is very sadly past his best. It's a shame, because like every other Town fan it would be great to see a fully active Dyer back at Town - but the reality is he is very very injury prone. With our small squad it would seem too much of a risk - but of course everyone is entitled to their opinion! I also very much doubt (no disrespect to Phil) that a potential new player will check out TWTD before deciding whether to join us. I suspect PJ's ability to sell the club and it's ambition, along with Clegg sorting out the financial side of any deal will be paramount to the decision!

He is a big risk and a pay-as-you-play deal sounds attractive, but do these ever really happen in football? If a player did agree to it, what sort of payout would they want for each match, £20K, £30K, £40K? I expect Dyer could work out expensive and with his injury record we are probably better to look elsewhere (I wish we'd hurry up though, as Norwich are already on the brink of their second signing while we are still looking).

....... I'm sure Mogga has more about him - than taking a chance like this. I would be astounded if he even considered Dyer as a signing.

Dyer on his day could rip this league appart....without question. I am led to believe that he has had a chat with the club and is prepared to play a pay as you play deal. Yes he still loves the club and is financially okay. Just how much he wants to repay the club back for giving him his chance will remain to be seen.

churchmans :- The players we have left at the club are probably not playing for club but wages, which was why I commented on getting players in who WANT to play for us, not just their wage packets. How would we know, I guess only by their commitment on the pitch and off. And talking of Dyer, no one can forget or disbute his abilities as a young rising star. Years and many serious operations later, will those same legs do what his head knows they should do, I say this because during his recent loan spell I didn't see much of the old Dyer about him. Should PJ or Clegg negotiate a pay per play deal, that MAY make a difference. IMHO, I would sooner see his undoubtedly high wage put into a more youthful, hungry player from lower league or toward an experienced player who is not as injury prone. Just my personal opinion.
