Town Again Linked With Chopra Bid
Town Again Linked With Chopra Bid
Tuesday, 7th Jun 2011 20:55

Town continue to be linked with a bid for Cardiff City striker Michael Chopra. The Blues, who former manager Roy Keane targeted last summer, are again reported to have made an offer for the 27-year-old former Newcastle and Sunderland frontman.

Late last month, Town were understood to have turned their attention towards Chopra, having had a £2.3 million offer for Doncaster’s Billy Sharp rejected.

Cardiff, who recently sacked manager Dave Jones, were believed to be waiting until the appointment of their new boss to make a decision on whether to allow Chopra to leave with a bid of £1 million said to have been lodged, although some sources have suggested that the Welsh club are looking to recoup more of the £4 million they paid Sunderland in July 2009 with a fee of £2.5 million mooted.

More recently it has been claimed that the Welsh club could allow Chopra to leave even before the appointment of Jones's successor, perhaps with Town becoming impatient regarding the situation.

Elsewhere, Watford’s Danny Graham, linked with the Blues earlier in the summer, has completed his £3.5 million move from Watford to Swansea, signing a four-year contract.

It's unusual for the press to link us with a player...

This is all rather getting beyond a joke now.

Makes me wonder if we will actually be able to sign anyone of any note.

About time we were linked with someone :D

It won't happen. I'd prefer a young hungry player from the lower divisions rather than another over paid player at the end of his career

I hope this is true and not just EADT rehashing some old news, at least they haven't said its imminent!
I think he would be a brilliant addition to the squad but I really cannot see it happening, even if we were to agree a fee with Cardiff I could see wages being an issue. When Keane was here there was always the possibility of Chopra coming due to their alleged good relationship, however now there is no real pull for him to come here unless he actually fancies it.
As I said before, would love him to join but just cannot see it

@Crazee think you're missing the point a bit - we are bring linked by lazy journo's to every Tom Dick and Harry just because PJ has stated we need to sign players in specific areas of the team.

being linked doesn't mean we are even interested never mind making an offer that can be turned down by either a club or player.

if you're tired of all the 'linked with' stories this early in the off season can I suggest you take a summer sabatical from TWTD to prevent your stress levels rising even higher???

to quote the late, great Patrick Swayze in Roadhouse "it'll get worse before it gets better!"

Happy to have him here as it is not my money, but I don't feel Chopra is the man to single handedly fire us to he promised land.

Dragging up old news but Nugent would be better in my opinion, free as well...

On a side note, I enjoy the banter on TWTD, and it is usually pretty accurate in its claims, and if it isn't it still passes the time! But has anyone noticed how the EADT website is becoming pretty similar, as opposed to an accurate source which would only print stories if they were 99% sure, it now is just turning into a rumour site, is this simply due to the lack of actually news?

........ have never known this Club to have such a disregard for its Supporters - all that is fed is 'season ticket sales' talk.
I'm sure that no one at this Club really knows what is going on, and do they care ??? - downward spiral continues, and gaining pace by the day ............

Guessed it was time for the Chopra saga to be re-introduced - few more tickets sold.

Some links just follow us for years, Darren Caskey and Dele Adebola being classic examples. Surely this is just carrying on following Keane's interest? I thought we were talking £3M last time and now a £1M bid is mentioned, so he has dropped in value! Let's hope we do get him, but I won't be holding my breath.

@Blue Fred - Thanks mate! Not sure about missing the point, as such, but yes I do take on board about the lazy journo's ... but I guess I just don't trust our senior management, viz-a-viz one Mr Clegg in particular!

Anyway, your kind and wise words will certainly aid my close season stress :)

You do have to wonder whether the PR machine at ITFC deliberately churns out this stuff to convince the fans that they are after players ... someone must 'leak' it to the press.

I suspect there was very little in our potential Graham 'bid' ... hopefully we are after a player like Chopra - but £3M??!

Was certainly hoping for something more concrete by now - but as we have already left it well over 4 weeks - I am sure most people are getting so bored and fed up that another week or so won't hurt.

Wont it be great when Mr Jewell does sign somebody, especially if it is someone of Chopra,s proven pedigree. How many of you doubters will then have somethig POSITIVE to say about our club. The signings will happen, it is just a question of square pegs in square holes, not just to appease the nagative supporters. Long may i live in "cloud cuckoo land".

Let's be honest, due to their jobs, the likes of Carl Marston and Phil are obviously going to have much more inside knowledge than we do. So why would anyone want to make up we've made a bid for someone. Chopra will sign, in due course.

Tractorog added 22:16 - Jun 7
Is there anyone we have not yet been linked with?
To be fair to Phil, I'd rather he report the links and speculation than not. Otherwise we might as well just go to the official (yawn) site.... but all these links and no signings.... the ratio is almost as bad as our shots to goals ratio.

h32, in response to your "wake up" jibe to me last night, i,ve been wide awake for 40 years + regarding our club, i,m also realitic enough to know that during our golden years, ITFC punched above its weight, now money talks & it is getting much harder to compete with the bigger clubs. Perhaps a large dose of reality is what some on here need.

h32 added 22:39 - Jun 7
pinewoodblueboy - money has always talked - in my opinion your words are a lame excuse for the demise of this Club. Which of course your words indicate you accept - whereas I CERTAINLY DON'T.
And snap - I have been a Portman Road regular for 40+ years - and never been so pi##ed off as I am now.

And if you were correct, about money talks 'now' - then this Club 'supposedly' has a 'money bags owner' which should have overcome that problem anyway.

Why are there so many miserable people on here?? ffs!

Theres a brand new season approaching with PJ at the helm from the start. I trust him to do well. At least leave off the whinging and moaning until you have something to moan about. Under Keane i could completely understand the complaints, but to be complaining because we havent signed anyone yet? Whats that about? The season has only recently finished!

The team needed a clear out...and new faces will come in. Just be patient and look forward to a new start. Most of these 'links' are just rumours...nothing more. Why take them so seriously? The game is meant to be fun!

Pinewoodblue boy...youve hit the nail on the head. I believe currently we are only an average mid table championship side which may make it more tricky to sign players. But just be patient!

And Chopra? I think he would be a good signing. I'll wait and see what happens.
And please cheer up people..your seriously depressing me! :)

h32 added 22:51 - Jun 7
................. wait for it - 'why don't you go and support them at Carrot Road'.... because I don't want to. What I do want is to see this Club where it should be.
And not a laughing stock where players do not want to be (plainly obvious)and leaving - and others not wanting to come to.
This is not normal for ITFC - it should tell you something.
