Town and Blackpool After Blades Defender Monday, 4th Jul 2011 00:19
Town are understood to be battling Blackpool for Sheffield United defender or midfielder Matt Lowton. The 22-year-old plays primarily at right-back or at centre-half but can also operate at left-back or in midfield.
The Seasiders are reported to have made a £300,000 offer for the Chesterfield-born player, who came through the ranks at Bramall Lane having briefly been with Leeds as a schoolboy.
After loan spells with local side Sheffield FC and with the Blades’ sister club Ferencváros in Hungary, Lowton broke into the Sheffield United first team towards the end of the 2009/10 season, making his debut as an 89th minute sub in a 1-1 draw at Cardiff and then recording his first start in the 3-0 defeat of the Blues at Portman Road on the final day of the campaign.
Despite a red card in another 1-1 draw with Cardiff on the opening day of 2010/11, 5ft 11in tall Lowton established himself in the Sheffield United line-up as they were relegated to League One, scoring four goals in 21 starts and 11 sub appearances. He is contracted to the Blades until 2012 with an option for a further year at Bramall Lane.
Town are very much in the market for right-sided defenders with a lack of options at right-back and with centre-halves Gareth McAuley and Troy Brown both moving on this summer.

So the midfield next year is Carson, Bullard, Koumas, Bowyer Don't think so, but would have both steel and flare ! Do you think Sunderland would also loan back a certain 18yo Striker - well we can all dream !!
DanLyles added 13:44 - Jul 4
I know I'm being optimistic Corshamblue, but we can always dream. Carson is obviously already here, Bowyer looks very close to joining according to the EADT, while Koumas is constantly linked and costs nothing while the Wickham money makes Bullard realistic again so long as QPR don't get him. Any suggestions who we should bring in to partner Chopra???

Dan - I still have a feeling that Goodwillie might be the player. Aside from us being 'linked' (there's that word of the summer again) he is also being hunted by Rangers and Cardiff but sounds like even his agent is persuading him to look south of the border. Would certainly be an interesting forward line with Chopra

I know Wikipedia isn't always accurate and that Coppinger was down as a Town player in May, but Goodwillie is down as number 8 for Cardiff? Maybe we need somebody taller so that we have an arial theat as chops isn't too tall. John Carew anybody, I think PJ would gauge his attitude pretty quickly...

i have not heard anything about the koumas move!! would have him in with bullard. hopefully we will get one of them. as for bowyer!!?? i was mega critical about him coming here but thinking more about it would plug up the midfield he is really strong player and would break down opposing teams attacks and passing moves better than leadbetter

By all accounts another excellent player with potential as PJ would put it. I trust PJ to get round pegs in round holes unlike the previous 2 Managers we have had and this guy would fit nicely in at right back with pace as well. Hell when did we last have pace. As for the striker well we need a Connor Sammon type striker to go alongside Chopra - I think Karew would demand too much dosh. Be nice to get Sammon, Bowyer and Lowton but probably a bit too much to ask.

Well we certainly need a right-back, but don't really know enough about this guy to comment on him.

Seen this bloke a couple of times last season . Looks decent. probably worth a punt. Certainly better than CE at right back

Could we compete with blackpool? Id have thought so. For one if he came here he wouldnt have to live in blackpool!

Never heard of him but we need a right back as jewell doesnt rate peters
Sniegster added 18:22 - Jul 4
Awesome if we get this good young right-back to match our good young left back. Bodes very well for the future. (On a very different note, can't believe Mackail-Smith going to Brighton...)

Sounds like a promising young player. Specialises in a problem position for us, can also play in a number of other positions, is pretty highly rated at Sheff U and has some Championship experience = Sounds pretty good on paper! The Cresswell deal is a good basis for comparison and I'd be happy enough to see PJ take a punt on him (at the right price)

Could be worth a go, PJ seems to feel he would compliament us so he cant be all that bad.

£300,000 bid from Blackpool. If we cant compete with that we really have problms!
OrkneyBlue added 20:26 - Jul 4
Don't know much about him so can't really comment, just have to trust PJ if true. On another subject, check out http://www.football-rumours.co.uk/ipswich-rumours.php It's worth a giggle, if half of these rumours were true we would have an awsome squad! Heres an example 04 Jul 2011 19:15:10 Paul Jewel to blow Ipswich fans away tomorrow with the Loan signing of Shaun Wright Phillips for the season. Also to follow is Bowyer on a 2 year deal, along with Peter Whittingham. Hmm, funny how they haven't listed any source for this eh!

We are definitely on the right track.
Infineteregress added 22:25 - Jul 4
Young and an ability to play in multiple positions would certainly be handy. Sign him as a RB and then get in another first choice centre back and we'd be fairly solid at the back.
