Bullard Set for Town Medical Wednesday, 24th Aug 2011 19:33
Former loanee Jimmy Bullard is set to undergo a medical at Portman Road as he closes in on a return to the Blues. Boss Paul Jewell moved quickly to try to bring the 32-year-old back to the club as soon as news that Hull City were terminating his contract broke last week.
As reported earlier, owner Marcus Evans was at the club today, presumably to hold talks regarding Town's ongoing transfer targets, including Bullard and defender Ibrahima Sonko. The Blues appear to have fought off competition from QPR - whose move for Newcastle's Joey Barton may have seen their interest in Bullard wane - and Portsmouth to land the one-time England call-up.
In a perhaps not unrelated move, manager Paul Jewell's morning pre-match press conference has been moved back an hour with Bullard and his agent Simon Dent understood to be at the club this evening.
Bullard enjoyed a hugely successful loan spell with Town during the final few months of last season, winning the club’s Player of the Year award as he scored five goals in 16 appearances.
Town were keen to sign the midfielder on a permanent basis at the end of the campaign, but with two years remaining on his £45,000-a-week contract at the KC Stadium, manager Paul Jewell admitted that it would be a difficult deal for the club to negotiate with the Tigers.
Bullard, who cost the East Yorkshire club £5 million when he signed from Fulham in 2009, is understood to have held talks with Premier League QPR but with Rangers also unable to agree a deal with Hull.
The former Wigan and Peterborough man rejoined Hull for pre-season training but was suspended for a still undisclosed disciplinary incident on their pre-season training trip to Slovenia. After an internal enquiry, the Tigers terminated his contract last week.
Town desperately need a midfield playmaker and confirmation of the return of one of the club's most successful ever loanees would greatly improve the overall mood amongst supporters.

This is truely great news, not least that JB was my 6yo fav player and I had to explain hat he wasn't here this year to her disbelieving smile!!! Now let's also remember that one swallow doesn't make a summer. This week will prove to either be the valley floor or just a rocky cragg in which we plummet further. We all know that Jimmy brings quality but I hope that the wage packet doesn't prove devisive in the dressing room - if ME and SC have done their homework a large slice of bonus pie should be on offer to JB and all for promotion. It still also doesn't solve our CB woes but the process of ME, PJ and all working to get deals done collectively is a far cry from the past 5 years. Let us also hope that SC/ME have also learn't that letting players contracts fade out is a risky strategy and one which has little if any upside benefit. Still think that we will see-saw for the next 4-6 weeks as the team beds in, but now more confident of getting a result against dirty Leeds.

I agree it's excellent news in an awful week for town but I am becoming concerned with the age of our squad now. With Bullard, Andrews, Edwards, Ingimarsson, Delaney, Bowyer, Scotland, Ellington, Sonko and Healy all over the age of 30 it does suggest that it could be win or bust this season. I appreciate we also have young players as well but a large part of our team are the older players. Jewell does like having an older squad as he had at Wigan but it is risky. Also the wages that I assume players such as Bullard, Andrews and Bowyer are on could spell trouble if we have another mediocre season. Onwards and upwards!

Yeah but as Clegg stated in an interview, Marcus Evans is not going to settle for more mid table finishes. He's a businessman so he's not going to be content with making unbelievable losses. Let's just hope he sticks around! Btw you saying we can blow any championship side out of the water with transfer fees may I introduce you to West Ham and Leicester(who paid £5million for a centre back who sat on the bench last weekend), Churchmans = clueless.

Yep, another signing who can't tackle and will fade away when our defending loses us games.

Surely after the turbulent week we've had, the moaners could have a day off from their doom and gloom. One person doesn't make a team, but give credit, it's a step in the right direction !

bluelady added 07:30 - Aug 25
For those of you doubting his tackling ability, this is about more than that, its killer passes, the best set pieces in the championship, a player who leads on the field through his sheer passion for the game and someone to lift the dressing room.... I just wonder if he has been offered the chance of maybe coaching or similar once he stops playing??
WarkyWonderLand added 07:42 - Aug 25
If all the moaners channelled their energy at PR and supported the team the atmosp would be electric every game! Agree that everyone is entitled to their opinion but at the moment everyone needs to get behind the team. PJ is going nowhere and those not wanting that are just crazy. The players PJ has brought in the dark lord would never have got and it seems some still where those tinted glasses. As I said before he signed 24 players in 18 months! Let's get behind the team and the club we as fans are all supposed to love and well.
