Town Targets Among Late Movers
Town Targets Among Late Movers
Wednesday, 31st Aug 2011 23:44

A number of players mentioned in connection with the Blues were amongst the late movers on the final day of the transfer window. Dutch defender Jos Hooiveld has joined Southampton and Spanish centre-half Pablo Ibáñez has signed for Birmingham.

Hooiveld has moved to the Saints from Celtic on loan until January, while Ibáñez has put pen to paper on a two-year deal after leaving West Brom for an undisclosed fee.

Meanwhile, in Spain, Real Zaragoza central defender Víctor Laguardia, watched by the Blues during the La Liga club's recent British tour, has joined Segunda División side Las Palmas on a season-long loan with Spanish reports claiming he had the option of joining Town.

Elsewhere, former Blue Shefki Kuqi, 34, has joined Oldham Athletic for the season, having left Newcastle at the end of the last campaign.

i think we could have done with a bit more defensive cover i.e right back, but i really was hoping leadbitter would be leaving.

We've got what we've got now so lets use until January to try and build a stable team and some good team spirit. TBH think we can forget any notion of the play-offs or promotion, the team needs time to settle down and I hope the fans give Jewell the opportunity to turn things around.

I think PJ has his mind set on Collins/Shotton and a winger on loan.

Oh well, the only disappointment is the lack of a 2nd choice gk. Bring in Collins with a view to a perm transfer and a rb and I'll be happy.

By the way, I noticed a mr dos santos is still at spurs, surely 'arry/he might let him go on loan? Haha, maybe just 1 former loan star is enough?

Not great news. Two of our targets going to two rivals, and no signings for us. Be interesting to see what PJ says about these 2morrow.

p.j has always said its a 2 year project but i think when this team he has now gels they will be a force in this league. we have had two bad results this season we still have over 40 games left to play.
i bet off the record p.j. is expecting this team to finish in the top ten.

Would have been nice to see Ibanez, glad not to get the Dutch guy tbh.

Disappointing, but no massive surprise. Jewell is quoted on numerous occasions as saying any new signings are likely to be made via the emergency loan route after the Premier League clubs' deadline has passed. In terms of clubs outside the prem, there is less pressure on getting deals done on this date because of the emergency loans rule. However, would have been nice to see Ibanez come through the door. Hopefully Danny Collins later this week though.

PS: Saw Anton Ferdinand join QPR tonight... thought he turned us down a couple of weeks ago so he could "fight for his place at Sunderland", didn't take him long to throw in the towel!

Oh well, we're left looking at free agents (Richard Wright is still available!) and emergency loans (up to 3 months so we'll have to wait until early October if we want them over the Christmas games).

If Ingimarsson is fit again, we do have him, Sonko, Delaney and Smith available so centre back is looking less urgent even though the latter too are in poor form.

Right-back has been a worry since David Wright left! Edwards has done better than I thought he would, but I am not sure how strong he is defensively.

A former footballer tells me that defending starts with the midfield, perhaps people should remember that.

@Pazelle - Is that former footballer a lazy striker by any chance??

PS. Anton Ferdinand secured Premier league football and is still hoping noone wortks out hes never gona be as god as RIo (who aint that hot to start with).

Was really hoping we'd see Ibanez here, a former Spanish international and would be quality at this level. As he's signed for Birmingham I wonder if it's a location and obviously he wouldn't have to move.

Ipswich and PJ have shown no ambition and expose their approach in doing everything on the cheap. It's not who we want anymore, it's who''s free and doesn't have any options. Loans and frees.

The biggest factor in our approach to promotion now is LUCK. Can we be lucky this year? Not football knowledge just blind faith, luck and hoping it will all turn out all right.

Hopefully we'll still sign Richard Wright as he's available on a free he can sign anytime, we need more than two keepers and as one of ours has the threat of going back with 24 hours notice that leaves us with ALB and Cropper, one of which sadly after a good start isn't good enough and the other's just a kid. Still not addressed the RB problem, Edwards isn't a RB and Ainsley's just not up to Championship standard, well not yet anyway so very dissapointed that after we were told we could be looking at three more coming in on the last day we end up with nobody and one of those targets moved to a rival, which could well just have been due to location as I'd mentioned in a previous post. Yes ok, the loan window opens next week, but if we get one or two in there that could well mean nearly half our first team is made up of loanees which I never believe you should have as the core of your squad, but what do I know, I'm an Optician, not a football manager (well, only on the pc at home much to my fiancee's frustration!!!)

Paul Jewell said he was after 'AT LEAST three more players' - so where are they? Yet again he raises expectation and yet again no results. Someone has failed and I suspect it's Clegg - although PJ also has to take the blame. Yet again we lose out on our targets as they go to other clubs. Sure, wages for Bullard were not cheap - but if we are going to rely on loans that is a real worry. Imagine possibly 5 or 6 LOANEES in the team (agree all teams need a couple - but 5 or 6??). It's poor. Why we didn't agree more fees surely has to be looked at. Instead, it's mainly loans and freebies - and the club expect to challenge?? Abysmal. Bottom half of the table at BEST.

Hazelbum - Bringing in 11 players - with , I am sure afew added Prem loanees next week shows no ambition - plus spending lots of money is no recipe for success - Me thinks you are very much a 'glass is half full type of guy' - nice pic though
