Andrews Starts for Ireland as Delaney Added to Squad
Thursday, 1st Sep 2011 14:54

Town loanee Keith Andrews has been named in the Republic of Ireland starting line-up for their Euro 2012 qualifier against Slovakia in Dublin on Friday evening (Sky Sports Three/HD3 7.30pm). Blues defender Damien Delaney has been added to the squad.

Andrews, who has previously won 20 caps and has scored two goals, will play his usual international role, sitting in front of the defence along with Stoke’s Glenn Whelan.

Five-times capped Delaney, who was named in the provisional squad but was left out of the final party, has been drafted in after Kevin Kilbane dropped out due to injury.

Also on international this week are David Stockdale with England, Carlos Edwards, with Trinidad and Tobago, Jaime Peters with Canada and Josh Carson with the Northern Irish U21s.

Striker Tamás Priskin, who had been out of action with a recurrence of his knee injury, is with Hungary for their Euro 2012 qualifiers against Sweden tomorrow and Moldova next Tuesday.

Republic of Ireland: Shay Given, John O'Shea, Richard Dunne, Sean St Ledger, Stephen Ward, Damien Duff, Keith Andrews, Glenn Whelan, Aiden McGeady, Robbie Keane and Shane Long.

How's the bloke who writes the pieces on this site going to manage over the next week and a bit? What topics has he got up his sleeve to keep us amused? How about a few jokes to make us all titter? Ooh matron!

Just to be clear, by jokes, I don't mean the ITFC on-pitch rabble.

Yeah, just imagine if they both get injuries....International football takes second stage to the Prem and Champs league now, infact, it should be scrapped altogether, we're just living in the past, too many games and players playing globally and representing countries they've hardly ever been too in some cases...

The call up for Delaney will give him more confidence again

Hopefully this will prove evidence to Mr Andrews that we're a perfectly suitable platform to still maintain an International status. I don't think we should be regarded as just a stepping stone, i want to see us take Andrews perm in Jan, he's very good at this level and offers great balance with Bullard/Bowyer/Leadbitter.

Good signing. But we should NOT be signing anymore loanees. We already have enough.

Trapatonni obviously hasn't been watching Delaney this season! - "who else can we put in the squad in defence who might be slightly Irish"? "oh that fella from Ipswich, but you don't wanna look at his latest work" - "who cares! who else have we got"! - "surely somebody from that Dale Farm travellers site must be able to play in that position" - "na we'll stick wiv Delaney"!

If they play Delaney they will ship 2 or 3 goals.
Notice Fallon is up for grabs. Maybe we can tempt him away from Yeovil for a return to Portman Road?

Reckon Fallon might sort out our season. Good call.
I'd drive him here myself.

As Leeds said, we are a team full of internationals.
Stockdale (england), Edwards (T & T), Sonko (Senegal), Delaney (Ireland) Cresswell (good enough anyway), Leadbitter???, Bullard (ex-England), Andrews (Ireland), Murphy (ireland), Scotland (T & T), Chopra (asked to play for India) + Priskin (hungary) and all the rest
Makes me wonder why we are so bad. I liked Fallon while he was here, he played his heart out for us but simply wasn't good enough. No need to give the guy a hammering when he did his best. At one point he was our best striker (sadly..)
