Around 1,300 Town fans will be at Blackpool’s Bloomfield Road on Saturday after demand for the free coach travel offered in the wake of the 7-1 thrashing at Peterborough exceeded the club’s expectations. The Blues will take 13 coaches to the North-West for the game against one of last season’s relegated Premier League sides.

Chief executive Simon Clegg said: “Whilst being delighted at the sheer number of supporters who are taking up the opportunity to travel to Blackpool on the club coaches this weekend, it is fair to say that the demand exceeded our expectations.

“It’s one of the longest, if not the longest, away trip we will make in the Championship this season but to see so many fans making the five-hour journey shows the fantastic level of support this club enjoys.

“We know that it’s going to be a difficult game against Blackpool, a club that were playing Premier League football last season, but having so many Town fans at Bloomfield Road will be a massive boost to the players and I hope that we give them much to cheer about.”

Midfielder Jimmy Bullard added: “It is great to think we will be cheered on by so many fans at Blackpool and we hope we can put on an entertaining game for them.

“The supporters can act like a 12th man for us and the players will be doing all they can to give them the right result.”

proves a point mr clegg. we arent greedy fans but most of us have ordanary jobs on ordanary salaries so look at the home prices. charge resonable prices accross the board and you get a bigger crowd which helps the team and so the list goes on. Sorry for spelling

Absolutely right broomfield - x 2. The budgies managed to work that out, not quite sure why it hasn't been looked at at itfc. Bigger crowd = bigger noise = better atmosphere = more wins = bigger crowd = better revenue = premiere league.

As much as this was a nice gesture and a positive move, had booked train tickets and accomodation for Blackpool trip before Peterborough along with a nucleus of fans who attend all/most away games. I would wager that less than 50% of coach attendess attended the Peterborough game. That said its a step in the right direction from the club.

Too true Sammy^

I was at peterborough and I came from Manchester.
I suggest an idea of free ticket for those attending the pboro game would have been fairer, as Arsenal just did.

I dont want to discriminate between fans as as far as im concerned wether you read reports in papers, watch games on tv or go to the odd game we are all same. Just feel that the gesture should have been aimed at people who actually attended the game like us Huddersfielditfc. That said my Blackpool experience will be made better with 1300 fans cheering us on.
Town could learn a few things from Huddersfield, been to the Galpharm a few times, Hudders run a promotion/raffle for all season ticket holders every game, winner gets a box with hospitatlity chucked in. Gestures like that to reward loyal fans are good/welcome in todays day an age.

Me and the missus will be there! Although we haven't taken Mr Clegg up on his offer of free coach travel!! Perhaps i'll see if he wants to treat us to a complimentary pie and pint instead!

Why not do it every week Cleggy? They lost pounds would soon be made good by on the field results and larger ticket sales

The above has highlighted onme of the many failings of the club. Welcome as this is it will more likely benefit those who did not go to the Peterboro game.

Previous ticket promotions as with Cardiff last season have demonstrated that the support is still there. The club needs to get in someone who knows about this sort of stuff and start to adjust the price to meet the demand. We are now hitting nearly 12,000 EMPTY seats, surely there must be someway to get fans back through the turnstiles.

Never mind farcical great leap forward plans and projects, lets have a plan whereby we make it affordable and attractive to fans to turn up. For too long the club seems to have taken us for granted. Other clubs a streets ahead of us in this area. A one off of £15 dad and two kids with limited tickets available so taht you can test the waters and add a bit of urgency/bargain to it.

Attendances are slowly decreasing. Clinging onto some distant hope that we will be promoted and all will be well again is blinding the club to the need to do something now, not wait for that ever further away promised land.

Just get into the habit of winning games and the crowds will increase!!!!

I agree that the club should review ticket prices to boost attendances at Portman Road. Tickets for a tenner for certain games, half-price promotions, 3-for-2 deals, run competitions to give away thousands of tickets...just get people into the stadium and then hope that performances/results pick up so that these people come back, become regulars and maybe buy season tickets in future.

Glad to see we'll be taking more than 1.3K up there on the coaches.

Some great suggestions for ticket promotions being floated around on here - someone needs to tell Clegg to take a look! These ideas aint rocket science though - they're standard business techniques for improving sales.

Clearly, the amount of season ticket holders is decreasing because, let's face it, we're not as entertaining to watch as we were a few years back and also, we're just not winning enough - a great point made by @alfromcol. If we can put a run together, the seats will begin filling up. We're not getting as many match ticket purchases for the same reasons and also because, for spontaneous attendees, i.e. people that decide on the spur of the moment that they fancy watching the Town, £30 (SBR lower, on the day) is far too expensive!

I particularly like the 3for2 idea for some matches. As a exiled fan living in London, (sorry to repeat another story about how tight times are for everyone, but...) getting to a home match pushes a day's expenses to around £80 (give or take £20), with a high proportion of this being made up by the cost of the match day ticket. If a 3for2 deal were available, this would make the ticket cost £20, which IMO is far more reasonable and justifiable. Also, speaking on a personal level, i wouldnt care if promotions are for the 'lesser' clubs either. I go to Portman Road to watch Ipswich - not West Ham, Brum or whoever.

It is as clear as day to most of us that the current pricing structure just aint working... Anyone got Clegg's email address?

if they sort the prices out they get more fans in the ground and hopefully help the team get promoted (eventually) then its marcus evans treasure cheast and okfair enough you are always going to fill the ground about 7-8 times against man utd/city arsenal chelsea newcastle spurs possibly villa. Then higher average attendancess against the lower prem teams and i can fully take the higher match day prices.man utd or donny is a no brainer really. If we make match days more attractive for peaple then it brings more tourists to the area spend more money and everybodies happy. How many of us have gone to watch ipswich away and made a weekend out of it ie blackpool this weekend or north east or south east . You spend money on accomodation ,food , drink and possible days out while there. Its a snowball effect. As i said it brings money to an area , peaple get back to work and these peaple potentially purchase tickets and merchendice. Again sorry about the spelling

I am all in favour of reducing ticket prices and deals to get more bums on seats etc BUT what about those of us who managed to get the cash together and buy a season ticket (plus one for the boy in the family area which is another thing that needs sorting out) If they start letting people in sitting infront of me for less then I payed out I might very well tell them to stuff it.
On the subject of the family area - why is it low down where the kids get wet when it rains? Why isn't it up the back of Churchmans where there are loads of empty seats every match?

Lets face it the real winners here are Galloway and those who didnt bother with Posh.
As pointed out earlier the club wouldve been better refunding the cost of tickets to those who went.

SE1_ITFC added 16:56 - Sep 7
@carsey - Good point, but i dont think anyone is suggesting that all matches would be subject to promotions etc. Maybe just a handful a season - say 4, thereby not annoying or disadvantaging s/ticket holders.

Although it's good their will be a big crowd the gesture of free coach travel was mis-placed. The gesture was to compensate the fans who made the trip to Peterborough and many of the fans on the coach wont of even been at peterborough.
I was at peterborough and will be at blackpool...but will make my own way and cant help but feel a bit hard done by.
A refund or a free ticket to those who went to posh would of seemed more fair.
However, I mentioned this on the forum and got slated.

All well and good if your local to the ipswich area...but as a supporter who lives in Hampshire and travels home and away, this offer does little for me...not that I want any money back..you get what you pay for in this game...be good to gave a good following on Saturday...of which ill be one.
Up the Town.

13 coaches = approx 650 fans

So every other person who has purchased a match ticket is making his / her own way to the match.

Whilst it was encouraging to see the club actually offer something to the fans, I feel it would have been fairer to have either offered something to those who had proof of attendance at Peterborough or a free / reduced price match ticket for the Blackpool game, rather than travel from Ipswich, which clearly is only viable for a percentage of supporters.

You can never please all of the people all of the time. Arsenal would be able to identify everyone who had bought a ticket for the ManUre game, and they decided to provide those identified fans (one ticket per person, bought in advance via their loyalty scheme) with compo for a rubbish performance and thanks for their brilliant, loud and positive support throughout. Town do not know who went to Peterborough (know of some, but many paid cash on the day), and clearly want to find some way of apologising to the fanbase for a rubbish performance. Unlike Arsenal, though, Town have no need to recognise brilliant, loud and positive support, as those of us who were there would sadly testify.
