Wabara Could Extend Town Stay
Wabara Could Extend Town Stay
Thursday, 6th Oct 2011 10:12

New loan signing Reece Wabara says he would be interested in extending his loan if his initial 93-day spell at Portman Road goes well. The 19-year-old Manchester City man made his Town debut as a late sub in the victory over Brighton last Saturday.

Wabara, who is tipped to push into City’s first team in years to come, says he thinks the Blues will have a successful season and would love to be involved: "I really think the team is destined to do good things this season and I want to be a part of that.

"If I'm playing games and the team is playing well then there is no reason why I wouldn't stay here beyond my initial loan."

The Birmingham-born defender played in the 1-1 reserves draw with Watford on Tuesday, a game he said was his first 90 minutes for seven weeks, having suffered a hamstring injury while away with England at the U20 World Cup in Colombia.

He says it was during that tournament that he first became aware of Town’s interest in him: "The reason I chose Ipswich is because they have a great manager, some great fans and ultimately I think they have a great team.

"The facilities here are fantastic but the most important thing for me is to come and play some football and help the team win games, which hopefully we can do.

"I actually first heard about the interest here when I was away with England, but my agent also told me that Ipswich had been watching me last season as well."

Meanwhile, boss Paul Jewell says he is been pleased with the way the club's five loan players are fitting into life at Portman Road: “Sometimes it takes a while to get to know team-mates, they are living in a hotel away from family — all these things that people don’t see are a factor.

"But they have all settled and if they continue as they have for the last few games we’ll definitely want to keep them.”

The Town manager admits that such temporary signings don't always work, particularly in numbers, but has been pleased with this season's short-term recruits:“I think you can sometimes have too many loan players.

"Sometimes you get loan players at clubs who turn up and, I wouldn’t say not care, but they know they are going back to their parent club. But all these lads we’ve brought in have really grasped the nettle.”

Last week, Jewell said that he would be "foolish not to" try to keep defender Danny Collins at Portman Road beyond his 93 days, while Keith Andrews's half-season loan has always been with a view to a longer term deal.

Sounds like a lad with his head scewed on, with one eye on the future. With the reports from his debut and the reserves game, sounds as though he has something to offer the team, or am I being to previous ?

if he improves us @ provides competition then why not? its a long season @ dreaded injuries always happen plus he can cover at centre half in emergency.

"But all these lads we've brought in have really grasped the nettle.” - Mr.Jewell.

Wahey, another initiation test for the lads which sorts the men from the boys? I'm all for alternative training techniques but hopefully Stockdale doesnt take that literally ;-)

Wicksy/Maysixth,

Since when has it mattered what the fans think...?

He was asked a question and answered it, having a rant that WE will decide if he stays or goes is both naive and (&) a little churlish.

If he's a good player and provides either cover for Carlos or gets into the team and makes the spot his own then the club will look to keep him, irrespective of either of our opinions.

Seeing as most of our fans could have an argument whilst on their own in a locked room 'WE' are the last people I'd want to make a decision on playing staff! lol ;o)

Sounds like he is enjoying it. I have a good feeling this team have fun together, a couple of laughs and sillyness. He probably feels like he is fitting in, great!

Sorry but I'm more interested in hearing that P.J. is doing all he can to keep Andrews and winning, No disrespect to Wabara I'm sure he will be superb for us but Andrews leaving would be a disaster.

The 19 year old was invited by PJ to say something positive. His words were changed/accepted by PJ. He was invited to speak to make him feel needed and to increase his presence and to give a positive "outside" view of what's going on. This is manipulation, but everyone can accept that I think? Clearly a very good player in his age group and VERY likely to play a number of matches, even though the positions he competes for a filled by excellent players.

The problem with loans is what happens when they go back? We are back to square one. Andrews and Collins have been great additions. Stockdale is also a decent signing. But what happens when they are recalled? Worrying.

Yeah, irishtim, you were looking for the ampersand '&' . Don't worry, you're not the only culprit, I've noticed GTRKing manages it as well!!!

It is nice to hear players saying so many positive things about Ipswich of late.

Jewell has made superb use of the loan market. We know we can't sign Stockdale and probably not Wabara, but Andrews and Collins should be possible. Goalkeeper aside, we have plenty of options in the squad to cover the other loanees with the likes of Delaney, Ingimarsson, Carson, Martin and Emmauel Thomas all pushing for places. Best of all, if any do go back I have confidence in Jewell to sign new players to replace them.

We're now looking like a really good side but the thought that Fulham could claim back Stockdale any time worries me. Brian Clough once said that to build a league winning team you start with the goalkeeper, that's why he bought Peter Shilton.

SamWhiteUK: I know what you mean about GTRKing. I really have problems understanding what she's trying to say. Looks nice though !!
