Norris: We'll Have to Be at Our Best
Norris: We'll Have to Be at Our Best
Tuesday, 18th Oct 2011 08:47

Former Town skipper David Norris says his Portsmouth side will have to be in top form to beat the Blues at Portman Road this evening. Norris joined Pompey on a free transfer in the summer and has so far scored three goals in 12 games for his new club, including a stunner in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Barnsley.

Norris said: “It’ll be really tough. They’re really flying so we’re going to have to be at the top of the game.

“But we’re going there on the back of a great result against Barnsley, so hopefully we’ll go to Ipswich with a bit of confidence.”

The 30-year-old admits he has been looking forward to the match against the side he joined from Plymouth for a fee in excess of £2 million in January 2008: “When the fixtures came out it was the one I immediately looked for. It’ll be interesting going back — a bit weird. But I just have to approach it as I would any other game.

“The team’s changed quite a bit over the summer, but there are still a few lads I keep in touch with regularly. There will be some good banter flying about.

“I always look out for my former clubs and want them to do well, but you always want to beat them and this game’s no different.”

Portsmouth sit in 17th in the Championship at present, having won only three of their 11 league games, but Norris says it doesn’t take long to climb into the top half of the division: “It’s so hard in this league, but if you can get a few consecutive wins then you can really fly up the table.

“Ipswich had a bad start but are on a good run now and are up around the play-off places, so it can be done.”

Chuck, you were a good servant to the club but you have backed the wrong horse mate, will be lucky to stay in this division and when Portsmouth go bust there will be no one to pay your wages then.

He gave 100% for us which we should acknowledge, he has now moved on and I wish him luck, but not too much tonight of course.

Blessing for us that Chuck left...that forced Jewell to bring in our midfield re-enforcements...so maybe without Chuck leaving, we would not have Andrews/Bowyer

Yep he is the past and a good pro - I respect him more than a Lavery type player - Agents really have alot to answer in Football - Good Luck Chuck but as has been said - our Midfield is stronger ( even with Leadbitter )

Norris is NOT better than Leadbitter. Never has been, never will be.

Leadbitter is a quality footballer that has sometimes not delivered for what ever reason. Norris is a hard working aimless headless chicken footballer. I'm amazed people can't see this.

he should get a good reception at PR, its Oly Cleggs fault that he left for free - what a waste of a valuable asset - no not Oly, but that chuck left on a freebie

Best of luck Chuck after tonight, but you really shouldn't be surprised about there being instability at Portsmouth.

blue em away .......... Norris may have been a hard working aimless headless chicken but he was a hard working aimless headless chicken who scored 15 goals in 115 appearances. ( 1 in every 7.5 games)

Leadbitter 'has sometimes not delivered for what ever reason' is because he always hits the first defender. He has only scored 8 in 93 appearances. (1 in every 11.6 games)

I would bet over half have been pens? Leadbitter really should be scoring more goals especially as head of the diamond tempted to put 50p on him now.

The only way Norris would get in the present team is at the expense of Leadbitter. Neither are that good but Chuck is way ahead of Leadbitter in all aspects.

With Andrews, Bowyer, Leadbitter in the middle of the park we have moved on like David has. Deserves a decent reception good hard working player. The one of many things I can remember is when we were at Carrot rd last season he was the only player to put his hands up in embarrasement after the defeat, But money talks and rules football.

Very tight game, Pompey will certainly feel gutted about not getting anything from the game. Norris had a few chances to grab the equaliser but good defensive display in the end.
