Boss Wants Challenge System
Boss Wants Challenge System
Monday, 19th Dec 2011 10:48

Blues boss Paul Jewell says football should follow the lead of other sports and allow teams to challenge refereeing decisions. Derby were angered by the officials taking some time to award Town’s goal on Saturday with their players questioning whether the ball had crossed the line.

Jewell told the club site: "Obviously the nature of the goal again raises the question about goal-line technology but I would prefer to see a challenge system brought in, similar to that in tennis and cricket.

"I would give each side two challenges a half, whether it be over a throw-in, a corner, a ball crossing the line or whatever. I think four calls a game would be more than enough for both teams.

"I could understand the frustration and confusion on the Derby bench, as the play carried on for a brief moment, but I think the right decision was made by the officials in the end."

Meanwhile, ex-boss Roy Keane says he doesn't expect to return to Town in the future, other than as an opposing manager: “I wouldn’t feel comfortable going back to Sunderland, nor would I be comfortable going back to Ipswich."

Elsewhere, ex-Blues loanee Jimmy Juan has joined League One Chesterfield until the end of the season, having been on trial with the Spireites for some weeks. Juan’s previous club Grenoble recently went out of business.

Try finding some decent players who are prepared to sign for us in January instead of worrying about things that don't concern you.

Ridiculous suggestion. Tennis and cricket have natural breaks in play in which challenges can be made by the players involved. In football, as happened on Saturday, play goes on so how and when do you make a challenge from the sidelines? Goal-line technology, if the decision can be relayed instantly to the ref, is one thing; this is something else entirely.

I don't like this challenge system suggestion.

Keane's comments over the weekend sounded bitter to me, and were another reminder of how good it is that he has left our club. He took over a team just short of the play-offs that needed a couple of new signings, ripped it apart and blew £11M+ making it worse, served up dire one-up-front football, then left a virtually valueless squad for Jewell to inherit. It may take years to recover, and we can't get any of that wasted money back.

It works in Rugby and cricket so why not.

I really like this idea. It works really well in other sports and would allow the most blatant errors to be eliminated. It would also stop football managers moaning about poor referring as they would have the power to intervene and I think therefore in the long run would improve the respect for the ref because managers would need to take responsibility for when to intervene.
The idea that it would ruin the flow of the game I think is wrong because the ball is only in play half the time as it is. They should only be used to stop very obvious errors which should therefore stop only a handful of errors which should be quick to clear up.

The most bonkers thing in this article is the comment from Keane. As if we'd ever have him back!

Goal line technology...fine, but this is a stupid idea. Managers would just use their allocated amount of challenges anyway and it would be used to time waste and fragment games further. Besides from which, it would just prolong whining about decisions. PJ really needs to put his brain in to gear before uttering things at times.

Keane wouldn't feel comfortable coming back as manager? Wow, what a disappointment to all those fans clamouring for his return! How can he turn his back on the legion of true believers who yearn for the days of teams picked at random, mindless outpourings of bile, and idiotic sales and purchases??

No thanks except for goal line decisions. It is part of the game.

Silly suggestion I think if you really think about it.

Football is a fast paced game. With four referrals a game you will have three more of what we had on Saturday, two minute breaks where no one really knows what's going on, especially the fans.

Plus its a bit of an anti climax when the referee has been talking to the linesman for two minutes then signals a goal - we want to see the ball hit the back of the net, not have the referee point back to half way to let us know if our team has scored a goal. It would slow it all down and in turn result in yet more stoppage time which we have a lot of already.

90 minutes of football would clearly take much longer and it would be stop/start. Okay for cricket/tennis but not football. PJ should be plotting his next moves in the transfer market rather than worry about this. Andrews, Stockdale and Collins MUST be replaced as a priority. Then we need to look for wide players, a striker (as Ellington was a pitiful signing - whilst we all know Chopra;s issues) and a right-back. Of course these issues should have been thought of earlier.

As for Roy - he would be better to keep his mouth shut! I did read somewhere that he said he wouldn't pay to come and watch ITFC - which is fair enough as several thousand fans have decided not to as PJ decided to play boring negative one up front football for the first 8 months of his reign!

What example does football give our children? Cheats prosper.

I've been calling for this for some time. An occassional delay while correct decisions are made is a small price to pay. Due to inadequate and corrupt leadership at FIFA, football has fallen behind every other major sport with regards to technology. It's high time it moved with the times like other sports and allowed challenges.

Football is fast moving game so refs need assistance. Anything that prevents the current ridiculous situation when within a matter of seconds, everyone in the world knew that Maradonna and Henry cheated their way to decide major games, yet these injustices were allowed to stand, is a good thing.

Stats on overturned decisions would give a completely objective method of assessing referreeing performance. Refereeing would become a genuine meritocracy. Bad refs would have nowhere left to hide.

How many times have you left games feeling cheated? I watch football to be entertained by the skill of the players, not to moan about the ref. I understand this floats some peoples' boat however, so perhaps make it three challenges per game, so they are used wisely and the ref-fetishists have something to get their teeth into.

Football only lasts 1hr 45mins, shorter than most sports. I think most people can cope with an extra 5 minutes while correct decisions are made, as long as they are kept involved and entertained and know exactly what is being challenged.

Clearly goal line filming could help altho' silly mid off and his surging 10 might get in the way. But why not?
RK has difficulty resigning himself to ignonimity.

Well said BrendanH. I actually suggested this exact appeal system to friends about 10 years ago and most agreed it was a good suggestion. You could even reduce it to just 1 decision per team per match as this is sometimes all you need. Look at half of the games at the weekend. There were loads of poor decisions that could have been rectified with this new system. I wholly don't agree with anyone that says this is part of football ... why the hell should it be. Why just accept that bad decisions will be made when we have the technology to do something about it!!

The linesman on Sat.were like puppets, when the ball went out for a throw in, they just stood there waiting for the ref. to signal which way the throw in had to go, then they would put there flag up in that direction.
No wonder there was a delay with the goal !!!!! and that really made Cloughie go beserk, I saw a lot of his father in him at that moment !!!!!

Great idea but only one per half per team, either that or let the ref refer back to a 4th official as they do in Rugby and cricket over tricky decisions.

Generally were there is a contentious decision the players surround the referee (mssrs Terry/Ferdinand et al.) and stop the game already so don't see that it would delay things over much.
