Crewe Boss Yet to Hear From Jewell
Crewe Boss Yet to Hear From Jewell
Saturday, 21st Jan 2012 08:33

Crewe boss Steve Davis says he’s heard nothing from Blues manager Paul Jewell regarding Town’s rebuffed offer for 17-year-old midfielder Nick Powell. Davis continues to play down the Blues’ interest in the England U18 international but TWTD understands the Crewe-born youngster was the subject of Town's weekend triple bid, along with Portsmouth pair Joel Ward and Jason Pearce.

Davis says he’s personally heard nothing and questions whether Portman Road would be the right place for the highly-rated youngster to progress his career: “I would have thought Paul Jewell would have contacted me if a big offer had been made for Nick.

“No disrespect to Ipswich, but would it be the right club for Nick? They’re battling relegation and you have to ask ‘is he the right player for that situation?’ Anyway, I don’t think Ipswich would have enough money to buy him.”

Town are understood to have made an offer of £1.3 million for the midfielder plus milestone clauses, but the Railwaymen are believed to want at least double that initial fee as well as top-ups. Chelsea - where ex-Crewe boss Steve Holland is assistant first team coach - and Arsenal are amongst a host of Premier League sides monitoring Powell's progress.

Despite the Blues' interest - a second offer is likely to be on the way - Jones says he wants Powell to keep his mind on his game: “The main thing is Nick concentrates on his football. Until my phone rings and someone says they have made an offer, then nothing is happening as far as I’m concerned.

“If something does happen I will be honest and up front with Nick about it, but he’s got to remain focused on his job.”

Steve Davis, the kind of mouthy manager that I hate, nothing to do with his abilities. Sounds like the boy is definately for sale at an inflated price. Could be a good investment when you think of how much we got for Connor, and not forgetting the main object is we then get him playing for us, if he's as good as people are saying and he continues to progress.

He's one for the future, if he came here he'd probably be introduced into the first team slowly. Unless we offer serious money and give him a seriously strong contract, then I just can't see him leaving the North...not at 17!
The big boys know about him, £2-3m is nothing for them given his age and ability...if he doesn't make it then he'll move on and they'll recoup that anyway so it's not a huge loss...I'd be very surprised if he ended up here.

I'm sorry but that manager sounds like a right tosser! Does he know about our youth programme? A hell of a lot better than most clubs in the Championship (correct me if i'm wrong) Lets put in another offer, cos we DO have enough money!

It does seem like an odd player to go for considering the position we are in. It would make sense for us to use all our resources to land the pompey lads, then come back for him in the summer.

cheeky beggar! Last time I looked Crewe where in league two!

Anyway, I don't think Ipswich would have enough money to buy him.

Does he know who our owner is?

This Davis chap has clearly been undermined by our bid going in above his head and feels left out!

Maybe he should pop out and get the milk and papers like a good boy.

No-one had any calls about transfers? Is PJ having a breakdown sitting in his hotel room crying himself to sleep?

Woss this bloke Davis talking about? Any young player with promise and ambition would want to join Ipswich, a club going places. He'd find a dressing room full of optimism and players old enough to be his dad. Imagine what Bullard, Chops and Bowyer could teach him. The young players could explain all about being sent out on loan. Jewell could show im videos of his past exploits and Clegg could...well, not quite sure on that one. And he might get to meet the Invisible one. The kid would be mad to ignore all this. Davis, you're a muppet.

We won't buy anyone. That's why jewell said the offers were reasonable. It means they aren't prepared to spend more. If we get anyone it will be an old boy central defender on loan or a one year deal. Someone like ingy.

Buy him now then leave him with Crewe till end of the season
Probably save a few thousend on the price and he will be playing regulary
Will then get a good pre season out of him and a chance to settle into life in Suffolk

Most people would say you need to bring in experience in a relegation battle, but given the age of Ipswich's squad that's the last thing we need!

We were hoping for two signings before the Birmingham match. That's been played now, Blackpool is behind us, today we play Leeds, 10 days of the transfer window to go...still no signings other than a loanee goalkeeper! I hope there is some movement soon. If we can't get the first choice targets, let's move on and bring in some other decent talent.

Main Entry:
reasonable  [ree-zuh-nuh-buhl, reez-nuh-]
Part of Speech: adjective
Definition: moderate, tolerable

I dont think something with this definition will get him, suspect we will follow up with a better offer. Much like Wickham, lots of 'interest' from bigger clubs, but Sunderland were the only bidder, could be the same here, we might get him for £2m or a bit more.....

Hate the way we do business at ITFC. We seem to have no idea how to make money. That 2nd division Russian side wanted Priskin-if we'd got 50,000 for him plus add-ons (i.e. promotion clause, sell-on clause) it would have been better than paying him off. Same with O'Connor- he was good enough to have got SOMETHING for him. We've lost Priskin, O'Connor, Ingimarrson, Andrews, Collins and nobody has come in (except a gk which we frankly didn't need).
Now we will end up throwing money at Crewe in a desperate attempt to get Powell. If we land him,- don't get too excited. We will be giving him away for free in 3 years time.....
So much money BADLY spent by this club. Only deal worthy of positive mention since Clegg came in is Cresswell.
Throwing money at a bad situation rarely changes the situation. All good business men know that. We need to identify the root cause of our rot and dig it up asap. I don't think its Jewell. Fair enough, he's made LOADS of mistakes but he shouldn't have been employed in the first place. I honestly don't know where the main rot lies.

Most likely beginning of next forever Town. Feel sorry for the lad if his introduction to first team football is to fight a huge battle against relegation.
Then again, might give him character!
So much promise this season, all gone now.
I will be very happy if we somehow manage to avoid the drop now.

OK, I'll bite...
We have the money, we have the academy, we have experience players to nurture, we need youth for the balance so he'll be playing.

Steve Davis is a tool.
