Appleton Confident Ward Will Stay at Pompey
Appleton Confident Ward Will Stay at Pompey
Wednesday, 21st Mar 2012 10:13

Portsmouth boss Michael Appleton says he’s confident that Town target Joel Ward will remain at Fratton Park despite holding talks with Blues manager Paul Jewell on Sunday. The 22-year-old was in action in Pompey’s midfield last night as they beat Birmingham 4-1 at home.

Appleton is hopeful that Ward will still be in his squad after Thursday’s 5pm loan deadline: “Joel had a chat at Ipswich on Sunday. But at the end of the day he is very committed, as you probably saw from the performance last night.

“He doesn’t want to go anywhere, he wants to stay and fight. Hopefully we are in a position where there is enough money in the kitty to keep us going until April 28.

“I am confident Joel will stay. I am confident we are in a position where we might be able to keep him.”

Honestly don't think he wants to leave Portmouth so we need to move on.
These negotiations have gone on for too long.

Ward and Pierce - why the hell would they come here, when they will be offered better salaries, a better lifestyle and a significantly better chance of playing premier league football, by the likes of West Ham and Southampton?

Great that we are trying to sign decent players, but crikey, enough's enough, it's starting to feel like we are begging them to join. They are most likely simply using our interest to up their wage demands, to the clubs that they are actually interested in joining.

Time to move on PJ, they don't want to come here, so fook 'em off out of it.

I'm just fed up with all the twerps at Portsmouth. Just hope they make it to the end of the season and we keep our 6 points. Very commendable that the players there want to stay & fight for the club, but don't come wasting our time.

Can't see either joining Southampton if they are as committed to Pompey as they say then joining their biggest rivals cannot be an option which only leaves west ham to battle against!

Pompey seem so delusional, took keep it short, their club is f***ed!

Relegation is probably their best bet at the moment, go down and rebuild. Unless they get a major investor (that's gone well in the past) they are going to have to off-load players whether they like it or not.

Ward would be a good squad player, would like to see Paul Taylor come in from Posh, a rapid striker, and the defence - same as the last 3 seasons...

I'm sure HMRC will be delighted to hear there is "money in the kitty"

Appleton gets on my nerves and needs to take off his rose tinted glasses. If Pompey go into liquidation at the end of the season what will their players be worth then - very little I suspect. Even if they survive they are in dire straights and will have to offload even more cheaply than now unless they miraculously find a buyer - but who would be so stupid ? Feel sorry for the fans but really hope they are relegated. The Club has got away with too much for too long. As for Ward I would definitely like him. He is the right age and is versatile and a very good player.

It basically means he's accepted that he's going to go, mind game comments.
Where's he going though, as in my post in the other Ward article, I'm frustrated by our transfer policy at the moment, things just go on for ever and never seem to get done. Whilst I completely understand business finances and the financial fair play ruling that's coming in, we just don't seem to be able to conclude deals.
who's fault/reason is it and why? Are we just so inflexible that if a player wants £10,001 a week, yet we've offered £10,000 we just wont budge?(exagerrated to emphasize my point) Or are these players really demanding wages that is far and beyond what we are prepared to pay?
I think, and it's my opinion only, this is not based on fact and that we are very inflexible, remember Shaun Derry? Who said he was in Keanes office willing to sign and the deal just couldn't be done, the question is why? But most of all, David Norris, who we had paid around £2.5m (probably £1.5m too much anyway) for, who wanted a 3 year deal but we were so stubborn and only offered 2 years, a player who was whole hearted and may well have been instrumental in our early season, very weak midfield but it was decided that rather than to get another 3 years out of a player who we had paid a lot for, we'd just let him walk out of the door and wave goodbye to a lot of money and it doesn't stop there, millions have been spent on players, who we haven't seen any return for (by that I mean either performances or a sale fee) over the last few years.
Rant (slightly off topic) over and good luck tonight.

So Appleton says this - “He doesn't want to go anywhere, he wants to stay and fight"

So why - “Joel had a chat at Ipswich on Sunday"

Just for fun?????

If he wants to stay at Pompey fine, the Jewell should move on to other targets because I am sick of hearing about them, are they the only 2 players available, look elsewhere for god's sake.

Portsmouth must be one helluva a good club to be part of. Norris went there in the close season despite being offered a decent contract with us. None of their other players wants to leave, preferring to fight it out, even though there are doubts whether they'll get paid, and also big risk of relegation. Wish them all luck, and hope our own players would be the same if we had similar problems.

As a Pompey fan I have always viewed Ipswich and its fans as a similar club that was not a large club now, but had a good history of success now and again. Also both teams playing and supported by fans that enjoy good attractive football, played on the deck when possible.

My view of the fans has however changed in reading the various ill informed comments on here about my stricken club. A club that has been raped by past owners, managers and the authorities to such an extent that yes our future is in real danger.
What we as a football club, players and fans is not need to get the sort of snipes you lot seem only too happy to spout on this forum.

Our players have been a very loyal bunch and all seem to have gone extremely reluctantly. Ward and Pearce seem to be saying the same thing. Its no detriment to Ipswich, its simply they want to stay and take their chances for the good of the team and club. Misguided in the long run maybe.. But refreshing in these days of ridiculously overpaid players.

After last nights result we now have a chance of staying in the Championship despite our 10 points deduction. Appleton, who is doing a very good job for Pompey as I believe Jewell is doing for Ipswich, however knows that another couple players going, make just be two players too many.

My final point is: The fact is the players that have gone have gone to clubs that have made it financially attractive to the administrator. Ipswich obviously have not made any sort of offer that cant be refused....eg/ Henderson to West Ham.

Ta for now and good luck if you have yet to play Donnie, cov or B City......beacuse we plan to be top of that league of four..
