Jewell Aiming to End Conveyor Belt Culture
Jewell Aiming to End Conveyor Belt Culture
Tuesday, 3rd Apr 2012 08:42

Blues boss Paul Jewell says he aims to bring to an end the “conveyor belt” of players moving in and out of Portman Road.

Although looking to add to his squad in the summer, Jewell feels it’s important that there is greater stability at the club in the future: “I’ve had a long conversation with the players and one of the things that’s come out of that chat is that it’s been like a conveyor belt of players here.

“Whether that’s loan players or players coming in and then getting sold, and I’ve been a part of that. I think it’s important that we get some continuity here, where there are people actually here, living in the area and committed.

I’m not saying that those lads aren’t committed but there’s something about people who are here permanently. Loan players can think, ‘I can always go back to my permanent club, I’m only here for three months or whatever it is’. We want to improve that togetherness and I think the players will thrive on that.”

Chief executive Simon Clegg recently told TWTD that he had completed 47 permanent and loan signings since joining the club in April 2009, 44 different players plus Jack Colback, Daryl Murphy and Jimmy Bullard who have all been signed twice, a total which Jewell admits is far too many: “It is ridiculous and I take responsibility for my part in that. As I’ve said a few times this year, we were searching for a formula rather than getting a plan and [sticking to it].

“Me and Marcus have sat down on lots of occasions. We know where we want to go. Maybe we’ve got to make sure that the way we want to go is the right way rather than at times just trying to find short-term fixes. We’ve got to plan for the future.

“It’s difficult because people want instant success. When we made a lot of signings in the summer, I think people thought ‘great’ and some of those signings have been smashing , don’t get me wrong, but we’ve got to have a long-term plan and stick with it if possible and be strong when it doesn’t work out at times.”

Meanwhile, Town will reveal the two new kits for next season on Thursday. The club have produced a website in preparation for the launch.

"It's difficult because people want instant success."
Clearly not the case or he would be gone.

I think fans ( and management ) would be content with an indication of a plan to improve the team and a goal to aim for (excuse pun). We may not be able to get the players we want but it is within our own control to maximize the potential of the ones we do have.

I agree we need more stability, and part of that is sticking with Jewell as manager.

While the loans and freebies have not all worked out, we should give Jewell credit for the players he spent fees on as every one has been a success: Cresswell, Drury, Emmanuel-Thomas, and Chopra.

MintyHalfWit - "The recent run of form shows Town can hold their own in any Championship company. Provided they field a side that is settled, that has built a team spirit, something long missing in the Jewell era. And provided Jewell is prevented from tinkering. I'm afraid I'm in the 'Jewell Out' camp."

This reads as though, it's the players who should be credited for a win, but it's Jewell's fault if we lose....you can't have it both ways matey. Just be happy that as a team, PR is once again a place opposition don't enjoy visiting.

Get some longer contracts sorted out then.

Stop dithering and offer the likes of Smith,Hyam,Jet,Cresswell,Drury,Martin etc longer deals..these youngsters are what we should be building around.

MintyHalfWit, you certainly have an appropriate moniker. Throughout our difficult times, I don't think team spirit or support for the manager were issues; we were simply making too many schoolboy errors and confidence suffered. As for supporters being patient, I don't think they are. We have been fed high expectations for the last 5 seasons and it hasn't happened. A vociferous minority come on here and immediately slate anyone vulnerable, especially Jewell or Clegg, without having any idea of the workings of a football club. Some of our recent successes e.g. Edwards, Smith, Drury, Leadbitter, JET, Chopra, Martin and Murphy have all been rubbished at various times. Only Cresswell seems to have been immune. I'm not happy about the last few years but I'm relieved that my club has not been in the dubious hands of many of the contributors on here.

Well said 50yearsablue. I suppose we just have to accept that a lot of this sites' contributors are moaning "glass half empty" prats.

POSITIVES: Since the West Ham game PJ has created a midfield/attack that dominates teams and creates lots of opportunities. Whoever we play in the engine room seems to create or score and generally get the better of the opposition, whether it be Drury, Leadbitter, Hyam etc. Edwards and Cresswell get forward well down the wings to support attacks, while between them JET, Martin and Murphy offer a plethora of attributes to threaten any defence and support Chopra. Having Carson, Bullard and Scotland as options on the bench is in imo pretty impressive at championship level.

NEGATIVES: Although the defence has looked more solid lately PJ needs to address this in the summer and have the likes of Smith and Sonko as reserves offering competition to whoever we bring in. Ditto ALB, who should be understudy to somebody like Brad Guzan.

THE FUTURE: Will PJ be able to sign the defenders and goalkeeper we need to stabilise the back four? Will he possibly use Hyam more frequently to give our defence better protection and possibly sign a more defensive right back? Will he be able to continue the momentum from the tail end of this season into the beginning of next? Ultimately, will we have an equally prolific side only with a meaner defence next season, with PJ winning his third promotion to the Premier League?

Everyone on here moans week after week about tactics /management / contracts / OAPs Dozzelss bobblewhatever a handful of wins and saying
he will finally consider the thoughts that many have had on here for the last year do not make him a good manager /or the squad a good team. When the lose again everyone will swing the other way the fact is HE NEVER WAS THE MAN FOR THE JOB AND IS CLUELESS and that is why we cant get players

Did a man of Clegg's assumed education really say "Me and Marcus"? What is the world coming to?

Sorry but I just want Jewell to go he causes problems, talks a good game, comes out waffle, gates are down big time, he is not the man to lead Ipswich Town and we are stuck with him

Surco72 added 16:51 - Apr 3
Newboy surely the point of the report is that we have signed too many players in a short space of time which isnt helping to get a settled side as quoted 47 players ,and yet you end another pointless post with "that is why we cant get players " !!!!
And i think you will find only you Jas ,H32 and Walbersdick come on here moaning week after week ,the majority can see the club is moving in the right direction and results are improving and consistency would have seen us challenging for a play off place

No manager is perfect in the transfer market, even Sir Alex. Mr Jewell has had his failures, but Stockdale was not one of them; he just had the misfortune to be playing behind one of the worst Ipswich defences for many years.
There are players who need to be moved on, the names of Bowyer, Ellington, Leadbitter and Bullard spring to mind, not least to free up resources for a new 'keeper and centre-back.

Garv added 18:17 - Apr 3
Bullard won't leave, just saying. Wouldn't want him to anyway. He'll come back next season, be brilliant and all will be forgiven.

Walberswick for idiot of the day? Mind you he's the idiot of most days. £10m? Please explain that. We sold Wickham for 8!!!!

Good to hear to a certain extent - but for that to happen we need to stop signing ageing players with only a few years of their career left / or we need to pay off for being rubbish. We also need to renewe contracts in a timely fashion - stopping key players leaving the club and then having to replace.

Sadly, I don't think this team is good enough and with Smith, Bowyer, Scotland, Sonko, Delaney, Leadbitter and Murphy all possibly leaving the club in the Summer - and with a desperate need to sign a No. 1 keeper - it seems to me many more players need to be signed to replace them ...

I was hoping that younger players would push through from the academy oover the next few years - but sadly we only have second pick of the 'talent' coming through thanks to ME and Cleggs decision to opt for category two.

All in all it's looking bleak.

How do you have the cheek to call us fans stupid ? Your posts time and time again are nothing but pointless and one sided . I really hope for your sake that your avatar isnt actually a picture of yourself because if it is you are just as stupid as you look . How do you work out that PJ hasnt made any money on transfers ? I will give you 2 words ....... Connor Wickham . Im slowly starting to loose my patience with planks like you . Why do you claim to support our club if you never have anything positive to say ? Going back from the West Ham game we have Played 13 ... Won 8 ... draw 3 ... Lost 2 . Is that not good enough for you ?

@Townietilidie

It's not even the negativity that annoys me, its the numerous statements that are simply factually wrong. It's embarrassing.

Nonsense comments Walberswick on every level.

The key to success is stability. No idea what your point is with regard to transfers. In fact, when things aren't working with a player he's been bold enough to get rid and save the club the expenditure on wages! Pretty sure he sold Wickham for 8 - 9 million which actually outs him in credit in transfer dealings!!

Every club has less money to spend! Not sure if you've been reading any posts re the financial fair play scheme...!?

It seems to be that the stupid suffolk problem is fans who aren't patient enough and don't have a clue what they're chatting about!?

Big game against Derby. Winner of this is in with a shout of a late play-off charge. Don't think at any point we were in that position last season were we Walberswick?

@ walberswick support ur club. I was a pj critic but credit to him he has turned it around. As Keaneish says beat Derby & we can hope for outside playoff chance

any praise for connor wickham's transfer surely rests with Bryan Klug or jim magiliton? And it was ME that sold him.

good luck to anyone who is clinging on to the hope of the play-offs, but then again that really makes my point.

jas0999 added 19:55 - Apr 3
walberswick - actually it was Roy who gave Wickham his main chance. Agree Klug deserves credit for bringing him through - but he had his best run under Roy.

Some people on here seem to have forgotten the scale of the rebuilding job required last summer. We won't make the play offs this year but the squad is looking in decent shape for next year. With the addition of a few quality players, there is no reason why we can't push on next season...

Garv added 21:47 - Apr 3
Actually no Jas if you're really going to go down that route he had his best run under Jewell. He scored nine goals in the second half of last season I'm pretty sure all after Jewell arrived. In fairness it was probably down to his switch to left midfield so we should presumably thanking Ian McParland, but still.

I'd be disappointed if we didn't enquire about a season long loan for him in the summer to be honest. I think he's what we need up front, that and some pace.
