Drury Feeling Better for Rest Thursday, 12th Apr 2012 11:39
Andy Drury had no argument with Ipswich manager Paul Jewell’s recent decision to rest him. In fact, he was all for it!
The energetic midfielder admitted: “When the gaffer sat me down and said he was going to rest me I have to confess that I felt I was ready for it. Not only that, having had my rest I definitely felt better for it when I returned to the team.
“March was incredibly busy and I also had a little dip in form so I could understand the gaffer’s point of view, even if I’m the sort of player who hates missing games.
“Overall, I think I have done okay. I’ve only missed a few games since I returned from my loan spell at Crawley and it’s not as if I was only in the side to make up the numbers. I won my place — and kept it — on merit.
“I used to look at the likes of Jimmy Bullard and Lee Bowyer, when they weren’t in the side, and it made me feel good that I was keeping them out. It also made sure I stayed on my toes and took nothing for granted.”
Drury loves his role in the Town engine room, driving the side on, and he added: “I like to be in the thick of the action. In midfield I always feel as though I’m involved in the game, even if I’m not on the ball.
“My role isn’t specifically to sit in front of the back four and protect them, nor is it to be bombing forward looking for goals. It’s a bit of both in the manager’s eyes and I just make sure I give 100 per cent all the way through.”
Drury has come a long way since his part-time days with Sittingbourne, his home-town team, and he is keen to play his part in winning promotion back to the Premiership for Town.
He said: “There are a lot of reminders of what Ipswich stands for as a football club. For example, we see a lot of club legends like John Wark and everybody knows what he achieved in the game.
“John turns up at the training ground quite regularly. He comes into the canteen and likes his grub, but he is held in high esteem by the lads because he’s been there and done it at the very highest level. He likes to pop in for a chat and he’s a top bloke.
“We recently had six members of the title-winning side of 50 years ago at Portman Road for the renaming of the Sir Alf Ramsey Stand and we made sure we paid our respects to them. They are the heroes from the past and today’s players all want to do their bit in re-establishing Ipswich in the top flight, which is what we are all working hard to achieve.”

Quality comment Garv - Dozells Bobblehat, quality too..... Very well pre-empted from the very predictable post by the usual suspect.... The only thing i think you forgot is that you didnt criticise the groundstaff, and the ball boys havent been blamed for anything yet...... im sure their turn will come, after all, they probabaly talk to PJ, and thats an offence punishable by death now isnt it?

ok Jas, so lets think about this without our PJ/SC hating goggles on..... The best managers in the world rest players...... video evidence here.... http://video.answers.com/sir-alex-ferguson-talks-about-resting-players-517209896 http://www.espn.co.uk/football/sport/story/144531.html Then theres always the fact that a goalie (Serini) covers around 0.3 miles at most in a match, whilst an 'average' for a midfielder is 7 miles, sometimes a little lower, sometimes a little more...... Maybe thats why 'resting' someone who doesnt run about could have been handled the way it was....... You really need to head off and 'support' another team, one which is a well run club, with a great manager and loads of good players, which is obviously not what we have in your eyes...... toodle pip now.......

buryblue77 - the problem is we are not playing bacelona in the CL final. We have been losing 7-1 to Peterboro and sit a disappointing 15th in the Championship. There is a complete difference. This season has been poor whether Garv, you and others want to believe that or not! I for one will continue to question these truely terrible decisions. Garv - you can take the mick as much as you like. You are entitled to your opinion as am I. If you really think the treatment of these younger players has been acceptable then great. I don't - and I certainly don't see how it can benefit players like Carson and Hyam being dropped after playing well. You also need to remember that these type of articles are carefully vetted by ITFC before release and players are told what to say at interviews. Drury is NOT going to publically slate PJ - even if he is disappointed of being dropped/rested. If it's the latter, then question marks need to be asked of the fitness coach - which again falls within PJ's remit!

Jas - why dont you write to Marcus Evans and apply for the job, if he turns you down accept that PJ probably knows best, and leave him to it? then try the same with SC's job, and if ME turns you down for that one too, then give that one a rest too? You could always cash in your multi million pound self created empire and buy ME out i guess tho, then you could make all the decisions you want...... If youre that unhappy, then stop folllowing the team..... its not that hard...... we're called supporters for a reason, if they called us 'criticisers' then maybe youd fit in better......

Jas, I agree with you, we have had at times some awful performances. I watched the 7-1 mauling we got from Posh and it was one of the lowest points as a Town supporter, all I'm saying is (and I don't necessarily include yourself in the list of moaners, you are entitled to your opinion and often your opinions back themsleves up with your reasons as for why you believe we're poor and not just the usual team and manager knocking rubbish for the sake of it that some spout on here for no reason) that some people just will not be satisfied, we could go up second and some would criticise because we hadn't won the league, I'm guessing you'd be happy with a second place finish, but some wouldn't. I still believe Jewell can get it right and from glimpses of what I've seen this season there are traces of that happening. If by next winter we haven't seen significant improvement then I myself will be in the Jewell out camp, but that does depend on how much strengethening is allowed over the summer if there is any money to spend, I've a feeling there isn't going to be a lot of it despite the team needing 4 or 5 key players.

well put Buryblue, agree re Jewell and with your time frames, i struggle to see a lot of the rationale in some of these peoples posts though which is what frustrates me most. Its the 'lets get in young hungry players' and 'lets get in a young hungry manager' or 'lets get in a new experienced CEO' with no back up at all which gets me the most...... Who are these people, where are they? why will they be better than what we currently have? I went to my first match 30 years ago aged 3, i want the good times back, i want to watch good passing, free flowing football, with a great succession plan for future years for finances and players. This can only come over time, not in a short term flurry as some people seem to think. If a manager has 2 years in the job and hasnt moved the club forward on and off the pitch, then yes, doubts will start to get there, but you have to give people time.......

If Andy Drury continues his progress and I'm sure he will, at the end of Carlos Edwards reign as captain, I see Drury at some point in the future taking over the armband.

Ha! Spot on Garv! You must have read Jas's post on the Hyam and Carson story! What do you say to this Jas? PJ still a nasty man who destroys the confidence of all around him...?

Some of you are so seriously dense, it should be regarded as an illness. What nasty, cynical little chumps you are. Nowhere in this piece has the guy suggested he's asked for anything, let alone a rest. He's simply commenting on questions he's been asked, and with it saying the correct stuff trying not upset anyone, especially his manager and advisories. Ignorant little feckers aren't ya?

Well Jas that depends what constitutes poor? If you're basing 'poor' on 7-1 vs Peterborough and 5-2 vs Southampton (certs for title/promotion now) then you're ridiculous. I'm not happy with what's happened this season, but who said we had any right to be in the play offs this year? The first half of the season was generally very poor, with one good run of form, just like the second half of the season has been generally very good with a short spell of losses in the new year. So its been no more poor than its been good, to put it simply. It's been probably a perfect example of average. Average is disappointing, but not disastrous considering where we were when PJ took over. Anyway that's completely off topic, we were talking about Andy Drury. Andy Drury is 28. To me that is not young. As others have said, if Drury can't take being dropped/rested whatever for a game or two then he's in the wrong job. And that's not even the case, in the text above he is actually quoted saying "a rest did me good". Okay, he's not going to slate PJ and he's not going to praise him to the heavens but if he says "I needed a rest", why shouldn't we believe it? Every manager rests players. Rooney has been rested many a time. So before, you blamed the manager saying the treatment of this player was poor, now what? Can you now accept PJ made the right decision in dropping him instead of playing him when not 100%? Again, Carson, I can't understand how anyone can criticize Jewell for his 'treatment' of him, seeing as his replacement came in, scored goals and is generally renowned for being one of our most consistent players and praised weekly. Is it because he is a loan player and loan players should never be used? Carson has never been particularly good this season anyway. Not poor but not exactly one of the first few names on the teamsheet. Hyam: He was fantastic alongside Drury for those four games. We then lost at Brighton where he supposedly had a poor game (wasn't there). Dropped. Seemed a harsh one, but again his replacement came in and hasn't had a bad game since!! I agree though when we realised Bowyer was too crap to start games he should have had a look in, but even then Drury was still getting games and Hyam is a relatively pointless sub compared to Bowyer who has been known to come on in games and sure things up. When Drury's been rested it would have been nice to see Hyam with Leadbitter, although I'm not convinced that would work. Luke Hyam has been unlucky more than anything else. We'll see what PJ really think of him when Leadbitter and/or Bowyer have departed.

So jas0999 - are you really the most miserable man in the world and genuinely think what you type, or are you just having a laugh? I'm thinking now that you just say things for effect. I do look forward to your posts though. And I love Roy keane.

rosseden, it drives me nuts too! I think a lot of these fans think that managing a football club is like playing champ manager, I mean I've won the Champions League for us on that game, uncovered some real gems of players too, but it doesn't mean I'd be any good managing, even at Sunday League level. The young hungry players will be slated if they're brought in and turn out not to be good enough (and so will the management for bringing in 'such untried players') and the young hungry manager they all talk of, do they forget the last one of those we had? Still recovering from his mess!
