Jewell: Ellington and Peters Can Move On Tuesday, 1st May 2012 06:00
Blues boss Paul Jewell says it might be best if striker Nathan Ellington and midfielder or full-back Jaime Peters move on during the close season. The duo have a year remaining on their current deals but played little part during 2011/12.
Ellington, who last week said that he might favour a move to play more regular football, made only three starts — just one in the league — and 14 sub appearances without scoring after signing on a free transfer from Watford last summer.
Jewell admits that the 30-year-old, who was a key member of his promotion-winning Wigan side, has failed to make much of an impression at Portman Road: “He’s been disappointing Duke, there’s no two ways about it.
“I see him every day in training and I saw a piece where he said he hadn’t had a chance, but what he does in training, or what he doesn’t do, or what other people do in training can highly influence my decision on a Saturday.
“He hasn’t had a run in the team, there’s no doubt about that, but since he left Wigan he hasn’t really had a run in anyone’s team. Maybe he’s one that might have to leave in the summer.
“If Duke wants to move, he can, it’s not a problem. I know Nathan from Wigan and if he looks at himself - and I don’t want this to be a slagging match because it isn’t - he hasn’t done it since he left Wigan.
“Watford, I took him to Derby, he played in a pretty average environment there in fairness to him. Then he went to Greece, then he went to Preston. This was a great opportunity for him and he’s a great lad, but he just hasn’t done it.”
But the Town manager isn’t entirely ruling out Ellington getting back to his best and while he’s still at Portman Road says he’ll remain in contention: “He’s got a year to go on his contract and you never say never. As long someone’s here and working hard, I’ve always got time for them, but sometimes it might be better for someone to move on.”
As for Peters, Town’s longest-serving player having initially impressed in a trial in 2004, Jewell admits that the 24-year-old, whose only appearance for the Blues in 2011/12 came in the Carling Cup loss to Northampton, hasn’t had too many opportunities since he took over at Portman Road in January last year.
The Canadian international spent time on loan in League One towards the end of last year where the Blues boss says he failed to impress: “Jaime went to Bournemouth and Bournemouth didn’t want to keep him. I think it’s about time Jaime moved on as well.
“I know he’s a bit of a fans’ favourite and everything else and he hasn’t had a look-in for me, but where would I play him? Carlos has done exceptionally well, Lee Martin’s done well on the right, so has JET, so there’s been no room for him.”

Warkys-Tash just what I was thinking....he's done feck all since he left Wigan. Sadly another season of dross beckons....hope I'm wrong???? Peters is till young and had promise, hope he does well elsewhere, but has a tendency to run up cul-de sac's

Well PJ signed him despite evidence that Duke was past it so his cost should come out of PJ's wages. As for Jamie, his MOM performance at Reading when he marked Kobe out of game said everything about his energy and determination. A very big hearted player but sadly PJ doesnt rate him so best he moves on. Good luck Jamie.

ebitfc. Yet more anti PJ rubbish on here when he`s taking the obviously correct descision. Note the singular! To be more precise he's now taking the right corrective action (in the case of Ellington). He needs to make a lot more "obviously correct" decisions the first time round.

No doubt I will get slated for not supporting PJ, but the following comment sums up (IMO!) why PJ is a not the man to move us forward: "If Duke wants to move, he can, it's not a problem. I know Nathan from Wigan and if he looks at himself - and I don't want this to be a slagging match because it isn't - he hasn't done it since he left Wigan" Certainly not the arm round the shoulder approach, whilst PJ also fails to note that it was HIM who signed Ellington, despite knowing, as everyone on here did, what a poor four seasons he had had! Yet another one of last years signings allowed to leave. Really does demonstrate how wrong PJ got it. If ME had any sense he would assess the management situation at the club and NOW. Shame about Jamie - but clearly not in PJ's thoughts. probably too young?

Nice to see Jewell getting rid of the dross/dead wood!

Ellington can leave, he's just not performed &the decision to give him a 2yr contract was also appalling for a player who's been so poor for so long. As for Peters, i'll be sad to see him go, but I just think we've grown fond of him just because he's been around for so long, much like the way i've grown fond of the Condom in my wallet.

McCann,Taylor and Boyd been mad available by Peterboro all would be good signings IMO .It seems Town are not the only club trimming its wage bill like a lot on here seem to moan about

I thought Ellington could bring something as a squad player when he arrived. I doubt he was signed to be a first choice striker, we just didn't have too many good options up front so was worth bringing him in to see if he could give us some depth. 2 years clearly was a mistake now, but what's the big issue, now we'll look to let him leave and no great harm done. Peters just needs to find a level, not quite a Championship player and probably has stayed on the books too long.

Another player we'll have to pay up their contract. How much money has Jewell wasted? Could've had a proper academy instead.

Ellington has been a complete waste of space : maybe in a few years he will look back at his time as a highly-paid professional footballer and think "I'll never get that time back again, b*gger" ... or maybe he'll just think "Suckers!". Peters is an enigma : one of the lady stewards at Portman Road, whom I know pretty well, took him under her wing when he was first here (invited him to Xmas Dinner etc) and always said he was a lovely lad, but with very few mates. He seems to have been permanently homesick and depressed since he's been here, which is ages now. For his own sake, he needs to go home to Canada before becoming a very unwanted statistic : why this hasn't happened before now baffles me. A happy Jaime Peters is capable of being a very good player : but too much unhappy time has passed for him to become that player now.

Ellington's been a total waste of space..as for Peters,i'm baffled as to why Jewell hasn't given him more of a chance.

Peters has been here for far too long and played or trained under 4 different managers, not to mention other coaches and managers from when he has been away on loan in a lower league, and he hasn't impressed any of them. He clearly isn't good enough and it'll free the number 2 shirt up for a proper right-back. Ellington? Who's he? We had another striker called Ellington???

Lightningboy, in who's place would you have played him ?
petersongoal added 11:47 - May 1
I think this could well be the tipping point for me. If Peters goes then I don't think i can support Jewell anymore. What a ridiculous way to tell a player you don't want him anymore. Terrible man management.

I think PJ has been very brave in letting Ellington go and more or less admitting that he was a poor signing but sometimes these things work out and sometimes they don't. This one didn't.

Ellington - well it was worth a try on a free transfer and (presumably) low wages to see if he could recover his old form. Hasn't made any major mistakes in his few (mainly sub) appearances, just not really done it at Ipswich. Peters - I've always liked his effort and commitment. Remember (think it was Southampton in the FA Cup) him virtually knocking himself out going for a header. However, despite his speed, the end product has rarely been there, crossing not particularly good. And, as Jewell says, where does he fit into the current system? Edwards is arguably as good at RB and certainly more effective going forwards; Martin, JET and Carson are ahead of him in the midfield role. A shame, in some ways, but it's probably better for both parties if he moves on. Best wishes to Ellington and Peters in the next stage of their careers.

Blimey, its going to be another big summer! Think this is the right call in letting these two go though, bit of dead wood out and some wages freed up. Will they be given free transfers though as I cant see too many clubs in for them??? What worries me looking at the squad is how paper thin it is looking! 6 players PJ wants may not be enough IMO, our squad at present with all the players leaving and potentially leaving looks like this as the moment: Lee-Barrett Delaney Smith Cresswell Edwards Ainsley Whight Martin Drury Bullard Lawrence Stevenson Hyam Carson Jet Chopra Scotland Murray Not sure if the likes of Ainsley, Whight, Murray & Lawrence will make step up and might be a bit raw to be considered first teamers. That leaves us 15 first team players, I personally feel like its going to be closer to 8 players that come in this summer. What worries me is the quality of players that are likely to come in though. Summer wishlist would be a GK, 2 x CD, a FB, a creative midfielder, a winger and a striker. Maybe Smithies, Mcfadzean, J Ward, Boyd/Ritchie, not to sure about a striker-Rhodes would be nice but in reality I cant see any of those as it seems we are going to go down the cheap and free route this summer and none of those players will be cheap. Will be interesting to see when the newspapers release their free transfer list to get an idea of who we could be in for. UTT

Eliington, Bowyer, Sonko..three reasons why we didn't suceed this year Jewell! Hopefully Jewell has learnt from his mistakes which came close to costing him his job, will need a big improvement next season if he is to be offered an extension to his contract.

And there lies the problem. The only place you see any player outside of the 1st team is in training. You don't see them in playing in any sodding games because there aren't any. Sooner reserve games begin again the better.
